I'm thinking somehow GM will get threw this, I've been doing my part buying GM vehicles and they don't suck like many people think.
11/10/08
So YOU'RE the one whose been encouraging them??!
I'm kidding. Halfway.
11/10/08
:) I'm even buying the older ones.
I do like my 05' Impala. The 02' TrailBlazer has been a good Soccer Mom SUV. Now that I drive it instead of Soccer Mom it just doesn't do it off road for me. But I like the 18mpg and power when I want it with the variable valve timing setup.
I need GM survive, if Toyota bought them up, or someone else, saying 1969 Toyota Camaro or 1960 Honda Apache would make me climb a clock tower.

Good points.
I think first they need to cut the dead weight, well, not really dead weight but the over abundance of different brands of cars.
* Buick--Keep, share platforms with chevy
* Cadillac---Keep
* Chevrolet---Keep
* Daewoo---murder violently
* GMC---keep in name only, make the large trucks GMC
* Holden----keep overseas
* Hummer---use to kill Daewoo, then kill
* Opel---keep overseas
* Pontiac---absorb by Chevy, maybe come back
* Saab----sell, if you can, or call Kevorkian
* Saturn-----kill
* Vauxhall----absorb by Holden
Then after the killing stops cut the models down, to a manageable point. We don't need four models in four classes. Let Chevy be redneck performance and entry level , Buick be family car and middle luxury and Caddy take luxury and performance luxury.
After that hope the upcoming presidency tells the overseas market we are going to even-up the tariffs on incoming and outgoing brands being sold. Even if they are built here ( Japanese Brands) the money goes back to the overseas company.
Then hope the union wakes up and sees it's have a job that may pay less or not have a job at all. Hell, my uncle was paid 100K a year to supervise people, meaning, watch someone get $40 a hour to install a radio.
Then, hope Chrysler survives because buying them would be to much to handle.
Then build cars here if the upcoming administration doesn't decide to tax them to death. Build US plants for US workers this will add new blood to UAW to help offset the costs of the retires, I hope. Have them entry level with entry level wages and work for the big bucks.
Then hope all the planets are aligned, the moons are in place, the workers work hard, the cars are sexy and fun again and maybe, just maybe it will all work out.
Of course, I just pulled all of that rubbish out of my ass, much like GM management, so it should work, right?
.....hearing crickets.....

That's why the new government should help the big 3 ONLY with money for new technologies and innovation.. not for prolonging the current situation... many workers will loose their jobs, but at least a part will be safe.. and the future of the Big 3 much brighter... how to get around the unions is a question I have only one answer for... bankruptcy.

I guess I must be part of the "problem" too. I've never owned anything but a GM vehicle,and they've all been great.

* Pontiac---keep as rebadged Holdes
* Saab----give it for free to someone who cares for the brand

Obviously, in the real world of tariffs and restrictions and other elements of the unlevel playing field, it's not that simple. On the other end of the spectrum, simply buying American for its own sake is also pretty dumb (if better alternatives exist). You have to decide what factors are important to you and weigh them accordingly.

Get a large bank to declare that it will be worthless.
Had the same bank issued an optimistic statement, the stock price would have swung the other way.
Large public speculation is often a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Stock prices are all about perception. They are only tied to earnings as much as the traders believe they are.
With a rosy outlook, GM would survive much longer. With optimism comes higher stock prices. GM could then offer up shares to regain solvency. With stock prices as they are, they couldn't get into the black by selling everything. With higher stock prices, their main asset (their stake in the company) would be worth enough to use as collateral to obtain a line of credit without having to forfeit any portion of ownership.
Percieved value is a powerful market force. If the masses would refuse to sell at fire sale prices, the prices would subsequently go up.

As to the stock price dropping so quickly, you've got to remember the stock market is still very much an old-boys insider trading network. When negative news comes in, the power money moves out of the stock -- and fast. Generally, as is the case right now, the only investors with their money still in the game are those employees and retirees who own common stock. And at the end of the day, they'll be the ones losing the most money.

They'd have better luck trying to get that Glas up and running..

Ultimately, they should go bankrupt and be forced re-evaluate the demands of the American consumer. Only then will they realize that they need to be more in tune with the future needs of their consumer base. Otherwise, they will continue to desperately cling to what's propped them up for the last decade, trucks and suvs.
11/10/08
And make no mistake, there will ALWAYS be trucks and probably always be SUVs. Because some people will always see the need/want for them. They will just have to be redesigned and re-engineered to fit the new style of vehicle. And if you don't believe me, look straight at the story from last week about Ford calling back workers because F150 sales were already going back up.
