You know what the problem with a vehicle like this is?
(well, yeah...there's that...and that...and the other thing)
...but what I was getting to, is that Segway takes itself too seriously.
If they ditched the self-righteous "we're gonna change the world" futurist shtick in favor of an early VW "yes, you will look like a dork" ad campaign, they might have a better shot. It seems people are much more willing to be intentionally uncool.
Who is it that expects cities to build dedicated lanes with over/under passes so that these may hook up into "cross-city trains capable of using special lanes for uninterrupted travel"
We at General Motors understand that not everyone in America wants a Hummer. For those people, we present the P.U.M.A. Buy one of these, and we can guarantee that you will never have to worry about getting a hummer.

Next in the series, will be a lithium ion unicycle. The key technological tour de force, being a rectal probe accelerometer. to detect even the slightest change in directional input from the driver. It will come with special neoprene pants, and a map of San Francisco.
They should stop while they're ahead. The more I hear, the greater the fail.
They may really be targeted as advertising vehicles - able to dominate plazas and high traffic areas on the cheap. Just a few months ago I saw a swarm of segways terrorizing commuters as they came out of a subway station - doing lazy circles on the plaza.
I love the concept of all those high tech electronics. Are they going to work reliably over the life of the vehicle, stored outside and used in all sorts of weather?
I'm glad to see that they did install 4-point seatbelts.
Secure storage capacity?
GM and Kamen may also be trying to go after federal funds for Personal Rapid Transit vehicles (PRT) as well as Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). PRT is sort of like the worst aspects of cars and transit joined into one very expensive transit system. ITS is more targeted as a way to get high tech defense contractors into the roadway business. Both will spell doom for all that is wonderful about driving.
Is this really that important that Ray wants me to retweet it?
I can see how this could be good if it replaced cars on commutes, though. It won't, because DOT isn't going to make a specification for it, and because nobody's going to buy one, but if you've got a commute under 30 miles (most people) on boring roads (ditto), charge this up, save some gas money, and have more drives on the weekend!
