    Ypsilanti, Michigan, one of the coolest car towns in the world, takes it on the chin again with the closing of the historic Willow Run operation. We should all make the trek to Ypsi this weekend for the Orphan Car Show in support of the community.

    @I wish for a D/FW LeMons: That plant built the B-Body, including the 94-96 Impala SS, so as far as I'm concerned it is entitled to stay open forever just on those merits. Forever!!

    @Triborough: If they were, I would have a reason to buy a GM car! Lovely styling (can't get enough of the 3 box sedan), and Italian engineering that was further refined by the glorious people of the Soviet Union. AvtoVaz 2107 FTW!!! Now if they were to round out their lineup with a ZAZ 965 and a Trabant 601, they would have the perfect lineup.

    A couple of years ago the US auto market was running at about 18 million vehicles a year. This year that's down to around 9 million. I've heard talk that the scrappage rate is 16 million a year, but that seems wildly optimistic. I'm betting on a non-recession yearly rate of 12 million. Does anyone know what these closures are doing to GMs overall capacity? With an anticipated market share of around 20% (and I'm pulling that number out of my ass) that would be about 2.4 million vehicles annually. Do they leave enough capacity to provide that?

    @Graverobber:

    Yep, capacity at 2 shifts a day is now at about 2.3-2.4 mil. This leaves overtime and extra shifts in case things go well to up it over that.

    I've always read 12 mil as scrappage rate. I'd say we'll be 12-14 mil for normal years through 2014ish.

    @RLJ676-LS3 Commuter Car - for the environment: Thanks. I got the 16 mill scrappage rate from an NPR commentator on Saturday, so I could be wrong there. Still, 12 - 14 seems like where we're headed. I wonder what the realistic margin is at that level? Also, can GM get its financing back up and running?

    Based on the FBI profile of the perpetrator, in tandem with this map, we have determined with 90% certainty that he is a male, probably in his 40s, with a graduate level education. He probably lives in the Maryland/Virginia area, but our indicators point to a very wide footprint in his history, including, but not limited to, Hawaii, Illionois, and possibly somewhere in the archipelagos of southeast Asia.

    Also, if you connect the dots, it looks like a basketball shoe. This is not a coincidence.
