    Meh, 20 million is peanuts for this sort of thing. Wagoner was by no means a great CEO, but he was hardly incompetent. And he certainly can't take all the blame for a mess that's 40 years in the making.


    The guy's a private citizen that just got canned by the POTUS. And now we want to strip that same individual private citizen of his retirement? Is this Soviet Russia? This is Russia, right?


    I'll be lucky to earn a 10th of that before I retire, but I honestly can't begrudge anybody their income.

    He's living the American Dream right there: get as much money as possible while doing as little work as required.


    My photography teacher last semester embodied this Dream, too. He was the most god-awful, hypocritical, unhelpful and cynical man ever to judge a student's creative merits - we never knew what he looked for in a photo, and even when he told us explicitly he still wasn't satisfied. But when it came to end-of-semester teacher evaluations, what could we do? He was the department chair. Even though half the class wrote "I hate photography now, this man is a horrible teacher and a useless sack of shit" (to varying degrees of profanity) he's still around to suck the life out of shooting photos.


    And that's why I stopped dabbling in photography for a while.

    This is a classic case of the headline drastically overshadowing the story. Wagoner inherited a deeply flawed company. He did a great job transforming it and keeping it afloat this long. If it wasn't for the carpocalypse GM would have a great shot at a decent future.

    @observer: Thanks to my misspent youth as an automotive journalist, I had several dealings with GM corporate, and therefore have a general dislike for GM. Kinda like a certain food that gives you diarrhea. It'll take a pretty good reason to try it again. All of that said, Wagoner did do several good things while at the helm of GM. While he's not an undeserving scapegoat--after all, where the hell are the Camaro and Volt, to name one head-scratcher--the fact that he got the shove before Minimum Bob Nardelli points to a bit of a raw deal. But not one I'll lose sleep over.

    @observer: Of course. Wagoner did a spectacular job. Which is why GM is on the brink of bankruptcy.


    I wouldn't hate the man so much if not for the U-Bodies, the re-badging, the 4L60-E, the J-Bodies, and literally no good mainstream cars until 2008MY.
