Did GM have to pay off NHTSA? 'Cause that would be ironic.

Maybe some NHTSA bigwigs just wanted extra time to survey the collection and submit their OWN bids before the gavel falls...

UPDATE: This feud is the only way anyone will pay attention to Barrett-Jackson. Next week, look for B-J to pick a fight with Somali pirates.

I still don't understand how the NHTSA has the authority to prevent the sale of an item from one private party to another.

Could they come in and prevent GM from selling an individual engine? What about a Corvette pedal-car?

@Mad_Science: The same reason the feds have the authority to spend our taxpayer money on government bailouts.

Similar to eminent domain. Whatever the government wants the government takes.

@ssurfer321: No, actually, that authority was granted to the Treasury department (a part of the executive branch of the government) through an act of congress...which makes it the law.

Last I heard, the NHTSA's authority (also created by congress) didn't extend to private-party transactions like this.

This is truly sad. NHTSA has too much time on their hands, too little to do so they have to invent an issue. Trust me from very personal experience, GM was very careful to comply with the DOT/EPA and NHTSA rules. That's the problem. The NHTSA doesn't trust its own rules. Now they are hiding under their collective desks.
When is the NHTSA going to realize that if they screw with GM, Ford or Chrysler too much there will be no US companies left fot them to regulate.

There are a few dealers that bought some of these cars at the auction that are trying to sell them to customers. Case in point, this Aztek:

This was the first production Aztek.... my only thought? Who are we kidding with this price...
