So, they got their hands on a Genesis and brought along a Mercedes E550 to see if Hyundai really has the beginnings of a top-tier luxury brand. Obviously, the Benz costs a pretty penny more than the Korean upstart, but you might be surprised just how comparable the two are. [Motive]

<![CDATA[ 2009 Hyundai Genesis Priced Starting At $33,000, Most Expensive Kimchi Ever ]]> Well, remember yesterday how we talked about the 2009 Hyundai Genesis being a value proposition at a sub-$30,000 price point with a V8? Well, Automotive News is reporting Hyundai Motor America has priced the new Genesis luxury sedan at $33,000 for the V6 version and $38,000 for the V8. Both prices include shipping. Do we still think it's a value proposition? Hmm. Not as much as before. What do you think?

<![CDATA[ 2009 Hyundai Genesis ]]> It was at dinner on the second night of my Korean adventure to drive the 2009 Hyundai Genesis on behalf of Popular Mechanics when I finally decided to try kimchi. If you've never tried the stuff, you'd better have a stomach built like a steel-clad clay pot. I don't. But after spending a few hours running the first luxury sedan from the Korean automaker through its paces at their proving grounds outside of Seoul I figured it was the right time to finally introduce the uniquely Korean delicacy — a pungent, brine-fermented mixture of cabbage, garlic and chili pepper — to my delicate corn-fed Midwestern stomach. The moment the smell hit my nose I had flashbacks to laying on the floor of a wrestling mat in 6th grade with my coach cracking open smelling salts to rouse me. For a brief moment I thought that maybe this was a bad idea. But it was the moment it actually hit my mouth that I knew it was a bad idea. My eyes began to water, my mouth filled with fire and as I forced it down my throat I could already feel it burrowing its way toward my colon like a Northern soldier tunneling to Seoul. Later on that stomach-twisting night — spent alternately clutching the side of the hotel toilet bowl or my bed's sweat-soaked sheets — I had a lot of time to think about the day. Maybe it was some sort of as-yet-unknown hallucinogenic properties of the kimchi, or more likely it was the lack of sleep, but for whatever reason, I started to wonder what this fiery side dish as old as Korea could teach me about the 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedan.

The exterior of the Genesis is certainly handsome from afar, chrome bits and pieces glinting in the Korean summer sun against the deep red pepper-paste colored spaceship-like exterior of one of the two sedans we test-drove. The interior's quite plush, filled with NASA-level doodads like a hard disk-drive-based navigation system complete with voice recognition, gadgets like Bluetooth connectivity and doohickeys like a USB/iPod connector and the well-bred Lexicon Logic 7 audio system.

It's not just the exterior and interior that're packed to the chromed-out gills. At a rocket-like 375 horses, the optional 4.6-liter Tau V8 packs the rails under the hood with the right figures for our taste, while the 290 HP standard 3.8-liter V6 ain't too shabby-sounding either. That's enough power to take the V6-powered Genesis up to a top speed of 130 MPH and the V8-powered sedan up to an Autobahn-like 155 MPH — and a 5.7 second 0-to-60 time. Gear shifts come by way of a more-than-capable ZF 6-speed automatic transmission mated to either engine selection. And did we mention the size? The Genesis is big — a wheelbase measuring 115.6 inches, a length measuring 195.9 inches and a width of 74.4 inches. Despite being bigger, longer and more uncut than many in this class, the Genesis still manages an astonishing 17.95 foot turning radius. And even with the beefy proportions, Hyundai expects the Genesis to eek out a commendable-for-the-class 18/27 MPG fuel economy rating with the 3.8-liter V6 and 17/25 MPG fuel economy rating with the 4.6-liter V8.

So on paper, the Genesis is certainly an attractive looking package, packed with all the goods you'd expect from other entry-level mid-size cars with alpha-numeric names like 550i, E550, CTS, GS 460 and TSX. But a true entry-level luxury sports sedan isn't built merely by ticking boxes on a list of options, there's more that's different between the Genesis and the rest of the segment than just naming convention.

For starters, buyers in the KDM (Korean Domestic Market, for the uninitiated) look for a more comfy ride than their U.S. market brethren. Hyundai's HATCI (Hyundai KIA America Technical Center, Inc) team deserves some credit for trying to rework the suspension on the Genesis with a set of stiffer springs, damping and shocks to match that differing set of preferences.

But the tuning shouldn't confuse buyers into believing the Genesis is a sports sedan. The buyer-in-the-know will realize that particular truth the first time you take a hard turn. Despite an admirable performance on Hyundai's Namyang R&D Center's ride-and-handling course, the now-stiffened Genesis still felt like it was floating through a bucket of marshmallow fluff. Combine the ride feel with an inability to steer with your right foot, a traction control system that (like many in the segment) can't ever be turned all the way off, limited steering feedback and thick levels of engine-sound-dampening and you have a feel that's more Posh than Sporty on the Spice scale.

But many buyers in the segment are finicky enough to be focusing as much on the looks as they are on the ride. At first glance, the interior certainly looks plush enough to deliver, and in some areas exhibited quality levels higher than others in the segment — fit and finish on the center console and over the transmission tunnel were top-notch. But I also found material choices inappropriate for the the segment. Despite the limited mileage, the perforated leather seats already showed significant wear and tear and the rear-seat plastics were below those of the segment's standard-bearers. Step outside the sedan and the exterior of the Genesis that looked so good from afar, on closer inspection showed larger-than-expected panel gaps and doors that shut with a strong shudder from the body.

Pop the trunk and again it looks right from first glance. There's a set of very nicely plastic-coated trunk hinges, the pull-handle's in the right place and they've even installed the battery there to increase rear-weight bias. But a closer inspection shows off a finish level approaching that found in a malaise-era Oldsmobile, with the backs of the rear-seat shelf speakers sitting exposed and naked and a carpet loosely covering the foam-coated floor. Although it may seem like we're nit-picking here, it's what buyers in the segment are prone to do.

And here's what kimchi has to do with it. You see, I'd become interested in the spicy stuff after reading a recent story in the International Herald Tribune about the Korean government spending millions of dollars on a multi-year program to take the pungent slimy stuff and create a more space-friendly version for the first Korean astronaut to take aboard the International Space Station. That's right, space age kimchi.

What I should have learned from that story — other than not to touch kimchi with a ten-foot-long set of chopsticks — is that I shouldn't have doubted the ability of Korean engineers to defy conventions and create something for the space age. The Genesis is so light-years beyond anything Hyundai's ever brought to market, it's hard not to be astonished. Seriously, who knew Hyundai could build a sexy-looking, rear-wheel-drive four-door with an attractively luxurious interior on their first try? The Genesis won't be right for the average entry-level luxury buyer. But those brand-snobs won't be buying this car anyway. No, the real market for this sedan will be one step below — that $30,000-level of the market littered with domestics like the 300C, the G8 GT and the Taurus — those buyers looking for the accoutrements and power one expects from a big rear-wheel drive sedan (or AWD, in the case of the Taurus), but who could care less about the pretenses. And they'd be getting a steal by choosing Korean — and less heartburn and need for Kaopectate.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Chillin' In SoCal ]]> Ever since we saw the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe revealed live at the New York Auto Show, we've been keeping our eyes open for any of these potential Mustang-killers out testing in the wild. Now, thanks to one eagle-eyed forum fan-boy over at SoCalEuro, we've got this set of KGP-esque shots of the little-South-Korean-that-could rigorously running through the paces of a mini-mall parking lot spot in the land of movie stars and materialism.

The first thing that catches our eye, besides the missing fuel filler door, is the set of wheels on this car. Unlike the optional 19" rims worn by the show cars, these appear to be the 18" standard units. Maybe we're imagining things, but we think the split 5-spokes look a lot like flowers. Maybe we just need to see it in person. We'll also have to see if there will be any other optional rims, but if these do come as standard equipment, expect a lot of macho guys to throw on some aftermarket shoes — unless they're really into dainty feet. Hat Tip to karamkid! [SoCalEuro]

<![CDATA[ Genesis Crossover/Wagon Not Expected Anytime Soon, Hyundai Deprives Countless Dozens From Buying Another Boring-UV ]]> After our news earlier on the XL-sized Genesis, here's the second piece of news-like rumor-busting for the day: We've been told by Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, President of R&D at Hyundai, that despite the rumors — and whether it be called a crossover, wagon or whatever-UV — don't expect to see another form factor from Hyundai on the Genesis platform anytime soon. While we mourn the loss of any opportunity for a rear-wheel drive wagon form factor, our dislike of crossovers in general is well documented. So we're both happy and sad. While we go and cry and laugh in a corner, take a moment to reflect yourself. That is all.

<![CDATA[ Hyundai Shakes Loose Details On Extended-Wheelbase Genesis ]]> As many of you guessed, I'm out here on the Southern tip of the Korean peninsula at the behest of the Mechanics who are quite Popular, getting the scoop on the new Hyundai [REDACTED]. While the driving impressions on the new [REDACTED] from the folks at Hyundai (Yes, Hyundai) are embargoed for a bit, there was other news out here from the little automaker that could in the Republic of Korea that is in no way embargoed. A couple of us auto journalistas had the chance to spend some in-car drive time with Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, President of R&D at the Kimchi Commander of an automaker. First news is that the Genesis and the Genesis Coupe won't be the only BH-platform vehicles produced on the Ulsan assembly lines. In addition to the two RWD-vehicles we've already seen, the boys n' girls at Hyundai are developing an extended-length version of the Genesis sedan — with the product platform designation of "VI" (which does not stand for "Very Immense") for the Korean domestic and Chinese markets.

This new Genesis that's bigger, longer and more uncut by 8" will replace the Equus JS 380 that's currently the car of choice for Hyundai execs. While the Equus is one big mutha-four-door, this new Genesis XL (or whatever) will out-lengthen the ol' and busted exec-mobile by an extra 2". And as we all know, size does matter — and apparently the U.S. market just isn't big enough to warrant those extra 8" of lengthened platform RWD executive hauling power. We'll live. In the meantime, we'll have more over the next four hours after we get a chance to snag dinner with Hyundai's Vice Chairman & CEO D.J. Kim. We hear he spins the records right-round. Also yes, after this post, we're assuming Hyundai probably won't be inviting me back.

<![CDATA[ Hyundai Genesis Spotted In Sunny SoCal ]]> SoCal Euro's eagle-eyed forum fan-boy by the name of "dub*man" caught some shots of the new 2009 Hyundai Genesis at rest in a local SoCal parking lot. We're assuming it wasn't just stopping for a quick bite at a local Korean BBQ joint. Whatever it was doing there without manny plates affixed to the back end, we're happy he caught some clearer shots of the new four-door with the ever-changin' grille from the boys n' girls at Hyundai. Yes, Hyundai.

<![CDATA[ 2009 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spied Testing In Ann Arbor With New, Less-Effective Organic Camo ]]> Given that we've seen a lot of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis, you'd think we wouldn't care if one was spotted out on the streets. But thanks to Hyundai's ever-changing grille designs we're actually quite intrigued and are therefore grateful that good ol' "larithmos" over at the Motive Mag forums managed to snap these photos of the new Genesis driving through Wolverine territory. We're guessing they're going to keep the price of this luxury car low by never washing it. The grille design is more like this grille than this grille or this one. But maybe they're just trying to throw us off the scent.

As you'll remember, the new Genesis is an attempt to absolutely decimate the luxury scene here by offering a large, technologically advanced, V8-powered rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan at a not too unreasonable price. Specifically, a 375 horsepower, 333 lb-ft of torque Tau V8 that puts power through the rear wheels and launches the sedan to 60 mph in under six seconds for a price possibly under $42,000. <![CDATA[ "Solara" Is The New Genesis? ]]> It always sucks for us when auto-lovers wants something so badly and so blindly they end up seeing things that just aren't there. It's even harder for us when we have to break the hearts of our beloved forum fan-boys — like in the case of the so-called third generation Solara spy photos from Friday. Sorry Solara-lovers, that ain't what you think it is. If there is a "new Solara" coming out, these shots aren't it.

As most of our commenters have already pointed out, what you're really looking at is a Hyundai Genesis sedan prototype. What caused all the ruckus with the lovers of the Solara is the fact that this Genesis prototype is still sporting a little of its pre-debut camouflage. Why's it wearing all the camo considering it was already officially revealed in both Korea and here at the Detroit Auto Show? Well, sometimes manufacturers will neglect to take off camouflage because, quite honestly, it's stuck on the car pretty well and it's a hassle. Though we bet sometimes they leave it on just to screw with us and all those forum fan-boys out there. That's right Solara Guy, we're looking directly at you on this one.

<![CDATA[ First Hyundai Genesis Customers Bewildered By Low Price Tag ]]> It looks like this pair of 2009 Hyundai Genesis Sedans got a bit tipsy on the way to their upcoming luxury-party crash. What you see here is a pair of early production or pre-production Genesi that were probably on their way to something important in Korea. Somehow along the way the truck carrying the black and silver pair lost its way, sending the cars tumbling on top of each other. Oops.

Though we've brought you photos of the Godzilla crashing earlier today, we don't see this as an alarming increase in Asian car accidents but rather a welcome increase in people sharing pics of wrecked exotics. And by "exotic" we mean, you know, stuff we don't see here yet. [Zeanon via CarScoop]

<![CDATA[ 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe: The Epic Reveal, Live! ]]> Wow. Ok, so we were pretty excited about the new 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, but we had no idea just how awesome the reveal would be. None of that crap about pulling a sheet off a semi-functional prototype. No, these Hoondais were blatantly fully functional. That's thanks to either a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 making 223 HP, or a 3.8-liter V6 that pumps out 310 HP. Hyundai is promising that this will be the cheapest 300+ HP coupe in the world. Full press release after the jump.

ALL-NEW HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPE: A NEW BENCHMARK FOR AFFORDABLE 300-HORSEPOWER SPORTS COUPES

NEW YORK, March 19, 2008 - Hyundai unveiled Genesis Coupe, a new benchmark for affordable 300-horsepower sports coupes, during a press conference at the New York International Auto Show today. The 2010 Genesis Coupe is a purpose-built rear-wheel drive sports coupe featuring two performance-focused engines - a 212-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a range-topping all-aluminum 306-horsepower, DOHC 3.8-liter V6 engine. Genesis Coupe is scheduled to join the Hyundai lineup in the spring of 2009.
Following the introduction earlier this year of the rear-wheel drive Genesis sports sedan, Genesis Coupe is Hyundai's most dynamic performance car ever and the second consecutive all-new model introduction from Hyundai appealing directly to the car enthusiast. Genesis Coupe uses the same flexible rear-wheel drive architecture that was originally developed for the Genesis sports sedan.
Genesis Coupe employs a MacPherson strut dual-link front suspension and a five-link rear suspension setup. Both engines are mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission. The Genesis Coupe 2.0t (2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo) offers an optional five-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC® while the 3.8-liter V6 offers a ZF six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC to handle the additional torque.
"We think our entry-level Genesis Coupe 2.0t, with its unique combination of rear-wheel drive and four-cylinder turbo power, offers an intriguing alternative to existing front-wheel drive sports coupes," said John Krafcik, vice president, product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America. "The 3.8-liter version of Genesis Coupe takes things to an even higher level, rivaling the capability of premium-performance coupes like Infiniti G37."
Genesis Coupe was shown as a concept at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show and its transformation from concept to production reveals that its signature design features have emerged intact. Genesis Coupe is also unmistakably linked to several Hyundai concept cars. The powerful curves, surface detail, and "Z" bodyside lines come straight from the HCD9 Talus and the HCD8 sports coupe. Genesis Coupe's arching roofline and tapering greenhouse highlight the exterior profile and emphasize the car's broad shoulders and wide stance. Genesis Coupe rides on standard 18-inch alloy wheels or optional 19-inch wheels, both delivering a bold stance and aggressive handling.
In keeping with its mission to be the most exciting, affordable sports coupe on the road, the Genesis Coupe boasts a cockpit designed to enhance the driving experience. An information display screen, features an outside temperature reading, audio system information and HVAC settings. Analog gauges include a large speedometer and tachometer positioned so the driver can immediately access critical driving information. The instrument cluster features Hyundai's signature blue gauge illumination.
Music lovers will welcome the inclusion of standard auxiliary input jacks (3.5 mm mini-jack and USB input) to accommodate and charge audio devices such as iPods®. Among the other refinements are an Infinity audio system, sport bucket seats and two-stage front seat warmers. Genesis Coupe also offers the convenience of a proximity key and push button starter.
The 2010 Genesis Coupe includes a wide range of both active and passive safety features. Standard safety equipment includes driver and front passenger advanced frontal airbags, along with front seat-mounted side airbags, side air curtains, active front head restraints, four-channel ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), one of the industry's most effective life-saving technologies.

Guess what? The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe has it. Here's the rest of the details — 212 HP 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a range-topping all-aluminum 306 HP DOHC 3.8-liter V6 engine. <![CDATA[ Hyundai To Launch Luxury Brand, Compete with Acura and Infiniti ]]> Our second favorite carmaker of the moment, Hyundai, has confirmed plans to launch a luxury brand similar to Honda's Acura or Nissan's Infiniti. The Korean carmaker is garnering significant interest due to its forthcoming launch of the V8-engined, RWD Genesis Sedan and Coupe. The new luxury brand will initially appear in China in 2010, but depending on its success, could be launched elsewhere.

Speaking to China Daily, company spokesperson Young-Key Koo, "In 2010, we will officially launch our luxury brand name and logo along the lines of Toyota's Lexus, Nissan's Infiniti and Honda's Acura. All of our luxury models will have the new badge."

Koo also revealed plans to launch one or two new luxury models each year, necessary to compete with their Japanese rivals. [Via Motor Authority]

<![CDATA[ Even More 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Press Photos Revealed ]]> Well, after the Tiburon-lovers at NewTiburon dropped a hot load of shots of the new 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe over the weekend, some sites (we won't mention any names, MT, don't worry!) were apparently confused over which shots made it out on to the web and just decided to drop 'em all. So, we're just going to follow suit. Here's all the press shots you could ever want — well, until we get you the live photos on Wednesday at the New York Auto Show.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Revealed, Unofficially! ]]> Taking a quick break from the GM-gasm on the new El Camino of the past two days, it appears as though the Hyundai-hungry folks at the New Tiburon forums have blown a load of press shots out on to the web early on the new 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe before next week's New York Auto Show. Other than the hot shots, there doesn't appear to be much more to tell you. Well, based on one shot, it appears like the new kim-chee-crazy muscle car redlines at 6500 RPM, and, oh yes, it's one hot looking entry into the muscle car wars looking much different than the 2010 Hyundai Genesis RWD coupe concept we saw at the LA Auto Show last year. We're certainly looking forward to seeing it live on the show floor next week. Especially if they bring the same lovely lady they had in LA and who we've now affectionately named Genesis Priddy. All we know is this little deuce-door gets our thoughts all a-tingly. What about yours?

<![CDATA[ 2009 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Spotted Before New York Auto Show Reveal ]]> We saw the 2009 Hyundai Genesis Coupe in concept form out at the LA Auto Show this past year, and we'll be seeing the new hotness from Hyundai for real in the warm lights of the Javits Center at the New York Auto Show next month. But for the moment, we'll have to make do with the folks at KGP snapping some shots of the new hotness before the official unveil doing some winter weather testing in Sweden. The KGP boys have snapped themselves some shots of not only the exterior of the new little Genesis coupe, but also a small gallery of interior and engine shots — including one very hapless-looking engineer with a face that positively screams "You're not getting my kimchee, mister!" But, the shots do reveal some bad news for fans of manumatics — no paddle shifters on this bad little muscle rocket. Maybe you can hope for a V8? Full spy report from our sneaky shooters of all things camo after the jump.

We just caught the latest prototype for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, caught testing in Northern Sweden. Our latest look catches the fetching RWD coupe with some new, multi-spoke euro-inspired wheels. We also managed a couple new shots of the Coupe's interior, revealing and automatic transmission with the expected +/- slot for the shift stalk. No steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters are visible—somewhat surprising given the Coupe's upscale gene pool stemming from the recently-released Genesis sedan. Heated seats, however, are on the options list.

We also managed a good look at the rear seat accommodations, and they
look fairly acceptable for real, full-grown human use. Leg room,
while not ample, looks reasonable enough. Hyundai's new coupe will be
a strict four-seater, with rear buckets separated by two cup holders
and a central bin. So far, the only confirmed engine is a 2.0-liter
turbocharged four-cylinder engine. A V-6 is also likely, but a V-8—
however tantalizing—is reportedly a long-shot.

<![CDATA[ Super Bowl Ad Watch: Hyundai Genesis Super Bowl Commercials Online; Halftime Show Still Live ]]> If you're not a football fan, you may have just lost one reason for watching the big game this Sunday night (unless you're going to be watching in anticipation of a Tom Petty wardrobe malfunction). That's right, we've got the highly anticipated Hyundai Genesis Super Bowl Ads right here, right now.

The Korean automaker's two new 30-sec spots take dead aim at German (rival?) automakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz and a tiny little swipe at Lexus (also rival?). Smugly touting their new 375hp V8, Hyundai is obviously trying to appeal to a more demanding clientèle and taking a little bit of an understated approach to the whole glitz-and-glam we normally expect from big budget big game ads. We think there will be quite a few people second-guessing their luxo-badge-snobbery come Sunday. And hey, does it seem like Hyundai's finally picked a front grille for the Genesis?

<![CDATA[ Detroit Auto Show: Hyundai Genesis Sedan Test Track Video ]]>
Just in case you haven't had your fill of Hyundai's new V8-engine, rear-wheel drive world beater, here's some b-roll video of not one, not two, but three of them driving around a test track. And according to Genesis designer Joel Pieskowski, Hyundai's still trying to decide which set of braces they'd rather have decorating the grille of their new speed saloon — and they're looking for your input. Your choices apparently are either the sideways white-picket or chain-link fence look. You retort in the comments below and they'll decide.

<![CDATA[ Detroit Auto Show: Hyundai Reveals Genesis Sedan, Disrupts Industry ]]>
Hyundai execs refer to their new Genesis luxo-sedan as an "industry disruption." It's the same kind of disruption, they say, Lexus achieved back when Japanese luxury cars in America were as much a nonentity as, well, Korean luxury cars in America. Nonetheless, most of you already know the details: Rear-drive, 375bhp, 333 lb-ft Tau "V8," zero-to-60 in under six seconds, five-link front and rear suspension, smart cruise control and more airbags than a press luncheon (bam!). Hyundai's apparently reverse-engineered competitors like the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class, Lexus GS and Infiniti M. [UPDATE: Lest we forget, the Genesis is also planned in 3.3- and 3.8-liter V6 versions.]

<![CDATA[ More Pics Of The Hyundai Genesis, SUSSUDIO! ]]> We've got more hi-res pics of the Hyundai Genesis than you can shake an 8-inch LCD nav display at. We've cleverly divided them into exterior and interior, so you, dear reader, can decide were Hyundai stole borrowed from their predecessors. Hey, we're not hating. Good designers borrow, great designers outright steal from those that came before them. And by that measure the people who designed the Genesis are the greatest designers ever.

<![CDATA[ Detroit Auto Show: 2009 Hyundai Genesis Sedan To Challenge Luxury Market, With Or Without Peter Gabriel ]]> (ED NOTE: Mucho many pics of the Hyundai Genesis are here for your invisible touch) We finally have the details and official pics of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis, the RWD luxury automobile that promises to challenge $60,000 luxury autos at half the price (no shock, it looks like the Genesis we already showed you). The big news here is features. Fully loaded the Genesis sports the Tau 4.6 liter DOHC V8 good for 368 horsepower and 324 lb. ft of torque mated to a ZF 6-speed transmission good for a sub-6.0 second 0-60 mph time. Like the Lexus GS, there's a five-link independent suspension to keep all that newly found power pointed in the right direciton. The car will also feature a bevy of state-of-the-art navigational and audio equipment tied together with an 8-inch LCD display. Impressive, also, is the list of admitted competitors: Lexus GS, Infiniti M, BMW 5-series, Chrysler 300, Mercedes E series and Pontiac G8. Full details and press release below the jump.

The new 2009 Genesis is the most advanced Hyundai ever

From its design and spaciousness to its technology and appointments, it delivers a wealth of features and performance befitting flagship European and Asian brands, but delivers them at a much more accessible price point. Starting with its Lexicon state-of-the-art audio system featuring LOGIC 7® technology, Genesis offers an extraordinary combination of technology, premium appointments, and value. Standard is a soft-touch instrument panel with woodgrain accents, Bluetooth® hands-free mobile phone interface, and USB/iPod® auxiliary inputs. A state-of-the-art navigation system with an eight-inch display is available. The navigation unit is accessed by a user-friendly multi-media controller that also controls the radio. Backing out of tight spaces and avoiding mishaps is much easier with the available backup camera that uses the eight-inch display to show the driver a clear view immediately behind the car.

A leather-wrapped dash, door panels, and console lid surround the driver in a luxurious environment, while heated and cooled driver's seat provides optimal driving comfort. An automatic windshield defogger with humidity sensor and rain-sensing wipers allow crystal clear sight lines. No other car in the segment offers an ultraviolet reflective leather steering wheel, which keeps the surface cool to the touch, even in scorching sunlight. Genesis also offers the conveniences of power rear sunshade, automatic electronic parking brake, proximity key and push button starter.

LEXICON® AUDIO SYSTEMS TEAM WITH XM, HD RADIO™, and APPLE TO OFFER UNRIVALED AUDIO PERFORMANCE AND CHOICE

Rolls Royce Phantom and Hyundai Genesis are the only automobiles to offer a Lexicon-branded state-of-the-art audio system featuring LOGIC 7® technology. The Lexicon® surround sound audio system includes a 12-channel digital amplifier and 17 speakers producing more than 500 watts of sound in 7.1 discrete audio. Genesis is also the first popular brand to offer the clarity of digital HD Radio technology from the factory. Navigation-equipped Genesis models also include a 30-gigabyte hard drive and XM NavTraffic. Like every 2009 Hyundai, Genesis comes standard with XM Satellite Radio. Auxiliary USB and iPod® inputs allow drivers to fully control and charge iPods directly from the head unit.

ADVANCED LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY

The 2009 Genesis offers Xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights. The advantages of HID headlamps include greater lighting power, daylight-type lighting and reduced power consumption. In addition, the cut lines of the new HID headlights are extremely precise, providing maximum nighttime visibility without distracting other drivers. The lamps also feature an auto-leveling function which keeps the headlights level regardless of how the vehicle is loaded with passengers or cargo. Genesis also offers an Automatic Front Lighting System that allows the headlamps to automatically swivel for better visibility when cornering.

NEW TECHNOLOGIES DELIVER IMPROVED SAFETY PERFORMANCE

Maintaining Hyundai's emphasis on delivering leading safety technology, Genesis boasts world-class active and passive safety features to help both prevent accidents, and maximize the well being of its occupants in the event of a collision. The Genesis continues the Hyundai tradition of standardizing key life-saving safety technology such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), eight airbags and electronic active head restraints.

Genesis' total of eight airbags include advanced dual front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and roof-mounted side curtain airbags for both front and rear outboard seat occupants.

An electronic active head restraint system will debut on the 2009 Hyundai Genesis. Hyundai is the first popular brand to offer electronic active front head restraints, an improvement over mechanically based active head restraint systems. Until now, electronic active head restraints could only be found on select Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus models. Active front head restraints have been proven by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to help prevent whiplash.

Genesis has a total of 8 ultrasonic sensors located on the front and rear bumpers. The sensors along with the rear backup camera help detect how close objects are when parking. Distance is indicated on the in-dash screen and accompanied by an audible warning tone.

Forward-looking radar is used in Genesis' Smart Cruise Control system. Smart Cruise Control adjusts vehicle speed to maintain distance from the vehicle ahead in the same lane.

Genesis is brought to a halt by large four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). The 12.6-inch front rotors have single-piston floating calipers and the rear brakes feature 12.4-inch rotors with single-pistons on V6 models. Twin-pistons and larger rotors are featured on V8 models.

WARRANTY

The all-new 2009 Hyundai Genesis is protected by the Hyundai Advantage, America's Best Warranty™. Coverage includes five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper protection, 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, and seven-year/unlimited mileage anti-perforation coverage. In addition, Genesis buyers receive 24-hour roadside assistance coverage at no extra charge for five years (no mileage limit) and that service includes emergency towing, lockout service and limited coverage for trip-interruption expenses. There is no deductible on any of these coverages.

<![CDATA[ Hyundai Genesis Sedan Revealed One Month Prior To Detroit Auto Show Unveil ]]> At a super-secret special test drive preview for the Korean media, Hyundai Motor Co. unveiled the sports sedan Genesis a full month prior to what was supposed to be the "official" unveil at the Detroit Auto Show and a full month after they showed off the coupe concept version at the LA Auto Show. The car features a rear wheel drive architecture and the new Tau V8 engine which will deliver 375 horsepower to the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai's V6 Lambda engines will also be offered in 3.3- and 3.8-liter editions.

Hyundai officials told members of the media to expect the cheapest version of the Genesis will cost just under $30,000 and top out at just under $40,000 and that Lexus is the target they're gunning for. Although we're assuming this Genesis will be the Asia-spec version of the up-market sedan for the Korean and Chinese markets, with the North American one to be introduced in January, we've got no evidence either way to tell us that this isn't the same vehicle, flair and all, that we'll be seeing next month in Detroit.

<![CDATA[ Hyundai Genesis Badge Revealed...for Chinese and Korean Markets ]]> Hyundai just unveiled the above shiny winged silver name-badge for the new rear-wheel drive power sedan from the Korean automaker. Yes, we know it's not very attractive. But the good news is the badge is only for the Korean and Chinese markets where, according to Hyundai, the wings will "symbolize the spirit of flight and soaring above it all..." Oh yes, they certainly do. Totally. But that's not the only Genesis news from the kim-chee commanders. They've also revealed some engine details...that...we...already...kinda...figured...

Specifically the top-end Genesis sedan will get the new Tau V8 and all 375 of its rampaging horses. The base model will end up receiving a V6 Lambda engine of the 3.3-liter variety and the mid-level gets the 3.8-liter. We're still expecting the world premiere of the new power-sedan to drop cloth at the Detroit Auto Show next month. Fear not, we'll be there.

The four-door power sedan'll come in all sorts of flavors other than kim-chee, including a V8 good for over 350 horsepower and some forms of V6 engines. We'll be there live next month to see if these shots are indeed how Hyundai gets its four-door groove on.

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: Hyundai RWD Coupe ]]> UPDATE: First shots are live! Brian Lam and I are here on the floor of the LA Convention Center waiting for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe to...oh there it goes. Once my eyes adjusted to the metal-flake, nuclear-sunrise orange initial impressions were RSX headlights on a Lexus IS wedge. Of course, the special thing is that Hyundai promises the coupe to be the cheapest 300HP RWD sports car ever, not just out of Seoul — we'll see if it'll beat a Mustang in pricing. The Viper-esque hood vents and carbon fiber bits won't make it to final for costs obviously, but the thought is certainly nice. The shapely triangle window, fifth relative of custom van glass, is staying.

Press release after the jump and we'll have video up shortly.

Hyundai unveils rear-wheel Drive Concept Genesis Coupe

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 14, 2007 - Hyundai unveiled its highly anticipated Concept Genesis Coupe during a press conference at the Los Angeles International Auto Show today. The concept car heralds the introduction of an all-new, rear-wheel drive 2 + 2 sports coupe scheduled to join the Hyundai lineup in the spring of 2009. Following the introduction earlier this year of the Concept Genesis sedan, Concept Genesis Coupe signals Hyundai's second step in broadening its appeal to driving enthusiasts.

The Sonic Orange concept is complemented by a Ballistic Black carbon fiber hood, roof and ground effects for reduced weight. Strong hints of the production version are highlighted in its "Z" bodylines and powerful curves. When the production sports coupe arrives, it likely will be the most affordable 300+ horsepower car on the market, and the most dynamic performance car yet from Hyundai.

Concept Genesis Coupe
"Concept Genesis Coupe is the most thrilling, most emotional Hyundai yet," said John Krafcik, vice president, product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America. "When it hits the market in early 2009, we aim to deliver a driving experience that challenges cars like Infiniti G37, at prices more like Mitsubishi Eclipse."

DESIGN PROCESS
"The mission for Concept Genesis Coupe was to create a pure performance car with a design that would capture the imagination of hardcore automotive enthusiasts," said Joel Piaskowski, chief designer at the Hyundai Design Center in Irvine, Calif. "With its aggressive look from just about any angle, I think we have been able to do that."

Designers used the Day Light Opening (DLO — a designer's term for the side glass) from the HCD9 Talus Concept on the Concept Genesis Coupe.

The HCD8 sport tourer concept's sensual body forms influenced the overall design direction of Concept Genesis Coupe.
The powerful curves, surface detail and "Z" bodyside lines come straight from the same underlying inspiration that guided two earlier, well-received concepts: the HCD9 Talus and the HCD8 sports tourer. The undulating beltline borrowed from the Talus adds intrigue while enhancing outward visibility for both the driver and rear passengers. The HCD8 sports tourer's sensual body forms influenced the overall design theme while also providing direction for the concept's assertive headlight and taillight designs.
The look of Concept Genesis Coupe was in part inspired by LeMan's race cars, drifters and by Jada Toys Dub City™ die cast vehicles. The front and rear stance of the Concept Genesis Coupe can be described as sinister.
"Beauty and danger co-exist in the design of the Concept Genesis Coupe," said Eric Stoddard, senior creative designer. "When viewed from a distance, the car is beautiful to look at. But up close it can appear a bit menacing and even a little intimidating."
The concept's rocker panels are drawn close to the ground making the bodysides extra thick and the daylight opening extremely thin, allowing the wheels to be slammed up into bulging fenders. To complete the aggressive sports car look, the depth between the fenders and the greenhouse has been maximized.
Three large heat extractors sculpted into the hood are designed to cool just about any powerful engine. When the concept becomes reality, three large openings in the front fascia will allow for better engine breathing. The dual exhaust tips integrated into the rear fascia repeat the design theme of the front cooling ducts and are surrounded by a large carbon fiber air diffuser.
An arching roofline and tapering greenhouse highlight the exterior profile and emphasize the car's broad shoulders and wide stance. Concept Genesis Coupe rides on 20-inch polished aluminum deep-dish wheels with Hankook 255/35 ZR front tires and 275/35 ZR rear tires.

<![CDATA[ New Hyundai Genesis Coupe Caught at Marketing Meetup ]]> So that's how they do it. Apparently, someone looking in on a Hyundai marketing presentation snapped some shots of the new, Tiburon-replacing Genesis Coupe Concept ahead of its debut at the Los Angeles show later this month. As we were made aware at the SEMA show last week, the prototype is built on the company's new rear-drive platform that will host the Genesis sedan. It'll get a 300-horsepower version of the company's 3.8-liter V6, which likely reflects the range topper among production models, which will be introduced at the New York auto show in 2008. As shown in these images, posted on New Tiburon Forums, the company's marketing minions are comparing it to Ford's Mustang, Honda's Civic Coupe and Mitsubishi's Eclipse. Now all it needs is that 350+hp V8 promised for the sedan and Hyundai's in the car business. [New Tiburon Forums via Motor Authority]

<![CDATA[ More on the Hyundai Genesis Sedan ]]> hyundai_genesis_spy_nov.jpgWith Hyundai having announced it would be building a 300-hp, rear-drive coupe on its new, upmarket Genesis platform, we're looking at the sedan version in a new light. The latest from Hyundai bosses, and confirmed at the SEMA show last week, indicates the company's new, range-topping V8 will indeed be good for "over 350 horsepower, as applied to the executive car shown in these new spy snaps. The coupe concept will be shown in Los Angeles this month, powered by a tuned version of its corporate 3.8-liter V6, an engine that will produce around 250 hp in the base sedan. That's all fine, but who'd have thought the new, revived Toyota Supra would be a Hyundai. [World Car Fans]

<![CDATA[ Hyundai Concept Genesis Coupe to Be Revealed at LA Auto Show ]]> Hyundai engineers have taken the company's new Genesis rear-drive platform — the one destined for the company's new, 350+ hp, V8-powered luxury flagship — and created a sporty, rear-drive two-door. At SEMA today, the company's VP of product development John Krafcik revealed a sketch of a new variant. It'll be dubbed the Concept Genesis Coupe when it shows up at the Los Angeles auto show next month. The prototype will be powered by a 3.8-liter V6 producing 300 horsepower, with a five-link rear suspension. The production model will appear at the New York auto show in 2008, before hitting dealerships subsequently. Yes. Rear drive, 300 horsepower, Hyundai. Think that over.

<![CDATA[ Crappy Newsletter Gets Us Pumped For Exciting Detroit Auto Show Unveils ]]> It's a wonder we were actually able to suck any information out of this newsletter from the 2008 North American International Auto Show. Despite the gratuitous use of overlapping words, photos and colored boxes, we were able to focus on the text long enough to figure out there's some info on the unveilings we can expect in Detroit. Click through to find out what Ford, Kia, Hyundai, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Subaru have planned for Detroit.

Ford: Another take on the Ford Verve that showed up at the Frankfurt Auto Show, hinting at the next generation subcompact to be sold in the US. Expect this iteration to ditch the hatch for a trunk.

Kia: A 2009-model SUV based on the Mesa concept. The seven-seater will be Kia's largest SUV yet.

Hyundai: The production version of the V8-powered, rear-wheel drive Genesis large sedan. Execs are saying the price will come in well under $30K, and horsepower of the new V8 at around 380.

Mazda: It's supposed to be a toned-down concept based on the Nagare (pictured) styling. But have you ever seen a toned-down Mazda concept? Yeah, they don't exist.

Mercedes-Benz: The unveil of a production model, likely the midsized GLK crossover.

Mitsubishi: They'll show both a concept and a production car, with more details expected in December.

Suzuki: It's the North American debut of a concept unveiled at Tokyo, meaning it'll be old news.

Subaru A global debut. Speculate at will.

<![CDATA[ 2009 Hyundai Genesis ]]> The spy shooters of Brenda Priddy & Co. snagged some shots of what they believe to be a very silver 2009 Hyundai Genesis. The new sedan — which saw a concept version debut at the New York Auto Show and have already seen quite a few spy shots of — built off of their new rear-wheel drive platform, a chassis we're expecting to see a number of new vehicles pop off of in the next 18 months or so including a new Tiburon replacement. The engine's going to be a screamer as well — Hyundai research and development boss Hyun-Soon Lee told a group of Korean executives the company's new 4.6-liter V8 would be massaged to 380 HP.

With production date just a year away, Hyundai is on track with final testing of the much anticipated rear-wheel drive Genesis. And like the concept shown in New York, this prototype is wearing the production-style grille. In the past, prototypes have been seen with a variety of horizontal and vertical grilles - but this is the one that will take it to production. The Genesis is expected to be equipped with an iDrive-type system and is using Lexus and Cadillac as benchmarks. The camouflage - off on the side of a couple of these views - gives an even better look as to what the production version will look like. We expect to see the Genesis driving around for the next year or so - just like this - wearing a few yards of black vinyl to hide the final details, until the production version arrives in dealership in the fall of 2008.

<![CDATA[ Hyundai Boss Says Genesis V8 to Produce 380 Horsepower ]]> Apparently Hyundai's not sparing the rod when it comes to its new upmarket sedan. According to the forum admin of HyundaiExchange, Hyundai research and development boss Hyun-Soon Lee told a group of Korean executives the company's new 4.6-liter V8 would be massaged to 380 horsepower in the company's new flagship, codenamed BH, set to arrive later this year. This past April, Hyundai showed the sedan in concept form as the Concept Genesis at the New York auto show, where officials boasted of silky DOHC 32-valve V8s, rear-wheel drive and competitors sweating in their yakisoba. <![CDATA[ Hyundai Shows Dealers How To Sell RWD Vehicles ]]> It used to be so easy being a Hyundai dealer — they've never had to sell a vehicle with anything but front-wheel or all-wheel drive. So we're glad to see the Korean company's helping their sales staff understand the differences between the various drivetrains as they ready the Genesis — their first V8-powered rear-wheel sports sedan for the 'merican market. We're all about providing a service to the industry and as a way of helping out here's a great article at CanadianDriver which we think could help greatly in explaining the differences. Why CanadianDriver? Mainly because we're seriously getting a kick out of just thinking about Canadians helping the sales staff of a Korean company explain the benefits of rear-wheel drive to American buyers. I mean come on, how United Nations is that shit? Eat your heart out, Bolton!

So it's a little derivative of a few luxury sedans of the early century. But Hyundai bosses say the Concept Genesis is a technical marvel. They also say it'll be arriving in the second quarter of 2008 at a starting price of under $30,000. Word is, it'll come with Hyundai's new Tau DOHC 32-valve V8, producing upward of 300 hp, and have more interior space than a BMW 5-series. How will Hyundai upgrade its econo brand image to accommodate a premium luxury model? Look for lots of TV spots featuring women in pearls, expensive real estate, and men in shiny suits taking shots of absinthe in Ukrainian speakeasies. They'll be a new company inside of six months.

Press Release:

HYUNDAI TO UNVEIL CONCEPT GENESIS PREMIUM SPORTS SEDAN
Rear-Wheel Drive and V-8 Engine Promise World Class Dynamics and Refinement

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 03/26/2007 Hyundai will present the world debut of Concept Genesis during a press conference at the New York International Auto Show on April 4. The concept car heralds the future architecture and design of a rear-wheel drive premium sports sedan scheduled to grace the Hyundai lineup in 2008.

"Concept Genesis extends our product range into new territories from a performance, design and packaging perspective," said Steve Wilhite, chief operating officer, Hyundai Motor America. "When it arrives in 2008 it will catapult Hyundai into competition against some potent rivals, and Genesis is up for the challenge." Concept Genesis rides on a prototype of Hyundai's all-new rear-wheel drive platform, signaling the brand's desire to broaden its appeal to discerning driving enthusiasts. Concept Genesis is powered by Hyundai's newly developed Tau DOHC 32-valve V-8 powertrain. Concept Genesis marks the beginning of premium performance for the Hyundai brand.

"Concept Genesis is a manifestation of Hyundai's extraordinary desire to deliver world-class products across all model segments," said John Krafcik, vice president, Product Development and Strategic Planning, Hyundai Motor America. "With Genesis, we've got a unique product position — an all-new, highly capable, rear-wheel drive platform; a high-performance powertrain; and premium, progressive design - all at a price starting well under $30,000."

NEW REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE ARCHITECTURE IS A FIRST FOR THE U.S.

Concept Genesis features a rear-wheel-drive architecture, its first application in a U.S. Hyundai model. Rear-wheel drive provides a 53:47 front/rear weight distribution for optimal handling as well as more refined steering characteristics. Concept Genesis' premium handling and steering performance is further controlled by Electronic Stability Control (ESC), the industry's most important new safety technology. Hyundai leads all popular car brands in the standard application of ESC, with more than 70 percent of 2007 Hyundai sales volume featuring this life-saving technology as standard equipment. ESC continually analyzes road speed, steering input, throttle position, lateral yaw rate and other factors. An onboard microprocessor determines if the vehicle is starting to understeer or oversteer, and can brake appropriate wheels and reduce engine power to keep the vehicle safely on course.

Utilizing ultra high-tensile steel in critical areas in the unibody provides Concept Genesis with a 12-14 percent higher dynamic torsional rigidity and a lower body-in-white weight than the BMW 5-series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. This stiffer, lighter, larger body provides a terrific foundation for world-class dynamics and lowering noise levels inside the vehicle.

Tau v-8 powertrain

Adding to the Concept Genesis' performance factor is the all-new Tau 4.6-liter V8 engine mated to a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual control and a limited-slip differential. The Tau delivers well over 300 horsepower to fit the demands of performance-oriented consumers. This powertrain combination will launch Genesis to 60 miles per hour in well under six seconds. The Tau engine is built with flexibility for the future. Future Tau variants may offer larger displacement, forced induction options and other technology enhancements.

INNOVATIVE AND SOPHISTICATED SPORT-TUNED SUSPENSION

Genesis features a suspension design that is among the most sophisticated and refined anywhere, at any price. The front five-link suspension features upper and lower arms linking the front wheels to the chassis. This artfully articulated arrangement creates a virtual king pin axis which dramatically reduces unwanted kickback through the steering wheel as well as improving responsiveness. The five-link independent rear suspension is equally sophisticated, en
