Unfortunately for Hyundai, this 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe was caught making its first entry into the destruction derby of automotive life in Korea. According to a translated version of the Korean website Luckyworld, the car was wearing a temporary plate when it smashed into the concrete barrier around a street light, leaving both passenger and driver in critical condition. Since we don't really know the circumstances of the crash, we're not willing to rule out this being not a temp plate, but a manufacturers plate, meaning the car could have been a non-salable tester. Which is why we're willing to overlook for the moment a lack of airbag deployment.

<![CDATA[ Hyundai Releases Specs On Genesis Coupe: V6 Hits 310 HP, Turbo Four-Banger Gets 30 MPG ]]> Hyundai has provided a wealth of new details on its upcoming Genesis Coupe, including statements the 2.0-liter turbo four will deliver 210 HP on regular gas and 220 HP on high-test, along with 223 ft-lb of torque at a low, low 2,000 RPM. The kicker, or at least it was until gas dropped down below $3 per gallon, is that those output numbers are available in a car returning 30 MPG on the highway. The 2.0T Coupe will be available in four different trim levels, ranging from base to promising-sounding "R-Spec," with six-speed manual and five-speed automatic transmissions available. Check out everything you ever wanted to know about the Genesis Coupe in the release below the jump.

Hyundai RELEASES ADDITIONAL ENGINEERING AND FEATURE INFORMATION FOR THE ALL-NEW 2010 Hyundai GENESIS COUPE

Genesis Coupe Delivers an Estimated 30 MPG

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Oct. 30, 2008 – Hyundai released additional engineering and feature information for the all-new 2010 Genesis Coupe today. The Genesis Coupe, and its rear-wheel drive platform-mate the Genesis sedan will make their Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show debuts next week.

“One of the program targets for the Genesis engineering team was world-class weight efficiency,” said John Krafcik, vice president, Product Development and Strategic Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “When you look at the size and content of both Genesis models, you’ll find we lead all our competitors in weight efficiency. We also target leadership in power-to-weight ratio. We think that’s just smart strategy in today’s world. It pays huge dividends in both performance and fuel economy, and that’s especially important in the segments in which these cars compete.”
Vehicle Engine Curb Weight (pounds) Length (inches)
Genesis sedan 3.8-liter V6 3748 195.9
Genesis sedan 4.6-liter V8 4012 195.9
Genesis Coupe 2.0-liter turbo 3303 182.3
Genesis Coupe 3.8-liter V6 3402 182.3

Both Genesis Coupe and sedan are rich in ultra-high-strength steel, leading to world-class body rigidity. The Genesis sedan is 10-12 percent stiffer in torsion than Lexus and Mercedes-Benz competitors, yet it is lighter than these benchmark sedans, and offers more interior room. At just 3,303 pounds, the Genesis Coupe 2.0T is hundreds of pounds lighter than all of its IRS-equipped rear-wheel-drive competitors, with body-bending rigidity 24 percent higher than BMW E46 M3.
Vehicle Length Curb Weight (lbs.) Horsepower Power-to-weight ratio
Genesis Coupe 3.8 182.3 3402 310 (est.) 11.0
BMW 335i 181.1 3571 300 11.9
Infiniti G37 183.1 3616 330 11.0
Camaro LS 190.4 3780 300 (est.) 12.6
Challenger 197.7 3819 250 15.3

This focus on weight efficiency pays dividends across the board. The Genesis sedan owes its ability to deliver both strong performance (0-60 mph in just 5.7 seconds) and excellent fuel economy (25 mpg EPA highway rating) in great part due to its impressive weight efficiency. Similarly, the Genesis Coupe 2.0T sets a new benchmark for front-engine, rear-wheel-drive gasoline fuel efficiency with a remarkable 30 mpg estimated EPA highway rating, because of its weight-efficient platform and its efficient 2.0-liter, low-pressure, turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

“While some turbochargers sacrifice smooth drivability with high operating boost pressures in the 20 psi range, Genesis Coupe uses a refined, low-boost calibration for smoothness and efficiency,” said Derek Joyce, Genesis Coupe product manager. “We could have opted solely for big performance numbers, but our focus for the 2.0T was a more balanced package.”

Genesis Coupe product highlights

With the start of U.S. market production now just a few months away, Hyundai Motor America is releasing model configuration and color choices for the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

“Genesis sedan has set a new benchmark for the $35,000-$40,000 premium sedan, and we think Genesis Coupe will do the same in the sport coupe segment,” Krafcik said. “From our 30-mpg 2.0T with its low-pressure intercooled 4-cylinder turbo, to the 3.8 Track model with an estimated 310-hp and Brembo braking system, Genesis Coupe offers a wide range of powertrain and performance choices for driving enthusiasts of all stripes.”

<![CDATA[ Hyundai Genesis Coupe Spotted In Metro Detroit Looking Yellow ]]> Jalopnik friend Jon snapped this yellow Hyundai Genesis coupe wearing M plates on I-75 in Metro Detroit yesterday. The angle of the photo shows the dramatic side creases found on the 2-door Korean Mustang-mauler, and from the rear three-quarter the car actually looks more like a Tiburon than its designers would likely care to admit. Kudos for a surprisingly good photo using what we'd assume is a camera phone while driving; we're hoping this wasn't the cause of that accident at Big Beaver yesterday afternoon.

<![CDATA[ First Drive Of Hyundai Genesis Coupe Published By Car Middle East Magazine ]]> We've given you manufacturer-supplied details about the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe, but now Car Middle East has taken it upon themselves to publish the first drive review of the upcoming Mustang-fighter. Thanks to Car's question-and-answer session with themselves we can tell you that, thanks to the Hyundai-built 3.8-liter V6, and combined with a limited-slip rear, the testers were able to engage in "some top quality rear-wheel slidey fun accompanied by a thoroughly enjoyable sound track from the dual exhausts." The package is good enough to get four stars from the buff book, but is there anything they didn't like?

The Koreans have moved their game on considerably in recent years. The dash is soft touch, the gear knob is a handsome beast and the chunky sports seats grip you around the bends just as they should. There are also some very fetching aluminium pedals and door sills to spruce up an otherwise fairly standard interior, and there’s full iPod and USB stick compatibility. The instrument binnacle and some of the switchgear still feels a little on the plasticky side though – Volkswagen and Toyota won’t be worrying about the Korean’s quality levels yet. But this is a car that isn’t just about functionality. It has soul to it, emotion - something we haven’t really seen from Korea before.

With the high rating and lack of real complaints other than switchgear, Car Middle East basically claims the Genesis Coupe marks the ascension of the Koreans to a new level. If Hyundai goes the way of Nissan, in ten years perhaps we'll have a Hyundai-built GT-R competitor for Porsche to attempt to discredit. Or, if they go the way of Ford, in ten years perhaps we'll have a Hyundai-built Mustang-killer in every possible variant under the sun. [Car Middle East]

<![CDATA[ Street Concepts Hyundai Genesis Coupe Concept Coming To SEMA ]]> An urban-camo version of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe will be debuting at this year's SEMA show in Las Vegas. As the rendering of the car shows, it'll employ the "secret military project gone horribly wrong" style of SEMA design, as opposed to the "straight forward performance" look of the HKS Genesis Coupe or the "possibly ripped-off Lexus tuner design" look of the RMR Genesis Coupe. The performance enhancements will include a new exhaust, cold-air intake, tweaked suspension and Brembo brakes. Larger version of the rendering here. Press release below the jump.

STREET CONCEPTS TO DEVELOP CUSTOMIZED HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPE for SEMA SHOW

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Sept. XX, 2008 – Hyundai Motor America announced that it is partnering with Street Concepts, one of the leading developers of auto show vehicles, to create a modified Genesis Coupe for the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show. The all-new, rear-wheel drive Street Concepts Genesis Coupe will make its SEMA Show debut at the Las Vegas Convention Center on November 4, 2008. The Street Concepts Genesis Coupe will join vehicles designed by Rhys Millen and HKS as the third Genesis Coupe scheduled to appear at SEMA.

“Its aggressive, powerful design and high performance attributes make the Genesis Coupe a perfect vehicle for SEMA,” said Shawn Williams, owner, Street Concepts. “We plan to maximize the driving capabilities of the Genesis Coupe while striving for a level of practicality so that average consumers can take ideas from our vehicle and adapt it to their own.”

The Street Concepts Genesis Coupe will be outfitted with a black camouflage, stealth fighter-inspired paint design that compliments its sports’ styling. The exterior will also feature a custom grille design, tinted taillights and an APR rear wing.

“From its inception, Genesis Coupe was developed with the tuner buyer in mind. The Street Concepts vehicle accentuates the core DNA of the product, born from enthusiast driver demands,” said Derek Joyce, Genesis Coupe product manager, Hyundai Motor America. “The three Genesis Coupes scheduled to be displayed at the SEMA Show exemplify the tuner-based performance potential of the vehicle.”

The Street Concepts Genesis Coupe will showcase Volk 19-inch racing wheels, performance tires, a modified suspension and Brembo brakes. A Magnaflow cat-back exhaust and cold air intake system will enhance the performance of the 3.8-liter V6 engine.

Interior modifications include carbon fiber dashboard accents, a custom Infinity audio system, Cobra seats and black suede accents designed to fit the stealth jet fighter theme.

HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPE HIGHLIGHTS

* Hyundai’s first rear-wheel drive sports car
* 306-horsepower (est.) from enhanced 3.8-liter V6 from Genesis sedan
* Standard 210-horsepower intercooled, turbocharged, in-line 4-cylinder
* Genesis Coupe production model arrives in spring of 2009

<![CDATA[ Allegations Of Swiped Designs Surface Over RMR-Tuned Hyundai Genesis Coupe ]]> Yesterday we told you about the first of many modified Hyundai Genesis Coupes to debut at this year's SEMA show. While the image we published was from Rhys Millen by way of Hyundai, graphic artist Jon Sibal is claiming part of it — specifically the front bumper — was yanked from one of his own design renderings of a hopped-up Lexus LF-A without permission. The LF-A design below the jump.

Sibal-LF_A.jpgWe dunno — the front bumper on Jon Sibal's LF-A does appear to bear an uncanny resemblance to the one on the RMR Hyundai Genesis Coupe. What do you think?

<![CDATA[ Rhys Millen-Tuned Hyundai Genesis Coupe Racer To Debut At 2008 SEMA Show ]]> Hyundai announced they've teamed with Rhys Millen Racing to build and introduce a track-going version of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe for this year's SEMA show. This Rhys Millen Racer is the first of a plethora of custom jobs from some of the best, brightest and ballsiest tuning shops who've received a Genesis coupe to play with before this year's SEMA show.

The Rhys Millen race boys will be massaging everything, including the engine, suspension, body and interior. A few of the upgrades include a big turbo kit on the 2.0-liter four-cylinder (an engine and modification we expect to be very popular when the car goes on sale) hooked to an HKS sequential race transmission, a coil-over suspension and lightweight Enkei wheels wrapped in Potenza tires. The body gets upgraded in the form of additional width, aero enhancements, a functional hood scoop and a carbon fiber wing at the back. This thing ain't your little bro's kimchee rocket. Full details in the presser below.

HYUNDAI TEAMS UP WITH RHYS MILLEN RACING TO INTRODUCE GENESIS COUPE AT SEMA SHOW FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 07/30/2008 Hyundai Motor America announced today that it has teamed up with Rhys Millen Racing (RMR) to create the "Art of Speed" Genesis Coupe show car. The Hyundai RMR "Art of Speed" Genesis Coupe 2.0t will be on display at the Hyundai booth at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in the Las Vegas Convention Center from Nov. 4 - Nov. 7, 2008. The RMR Genesis Coupe will be the first of many Genesis Coupes to be modified by some of the best tuner shops in the world. This RMR - developed Genesis Coupe will be a fully functional race car capable of putting the driver in the winner's circle.

The unique part of this project is that it will be moving art, which is why we named it the 'Art of Speed,'" says Rhys Millen, professional race driver and founder of RMR. "The focus will be on the engine and a radical body design to complement the factory body lines. We are going to transform the Genesis Coupe into an apex-carving machine with jaw-dropping looks. We think it has the possibility of being one of the coolest cars at the show."

The RMR Genesis Coupe will be powered by a 2.0-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder engine with RMR turbo kit for maximum horsepower and torque. It will be equipped with a heavy-duty HKS sequential transmission and a K&W coil over suspension to put that additional power to the ground. The are just some of the planned mechanical modifications to turn the Genesis Coupe into a race car capable of running in the Pikes Pike Hill Climb, Formula D or Redline Time Attack series.

"We've been excited about working with Rhys Millen since the minute he walked through our doors at Hyundai Motor America," says John Krafcik, vice president, product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America. "Genesis Coupe is a rear-wheel drive performance machine we designed to capture the hearts of hardcore automotive enthusiasts, so we can't wait to see Rhys' RMR Genesis Coupe on the race track."

The RMR Genesis Coupe will be outfitted in a silver and black paint scheme and dominated by a RMR wide body kit, functional hood scoop and a carbon fiber wing. Enkei racing wheels and Bridgestone Protenza RE-01 tires surrounding Brembo brake calipers complete the package.

Inside will be a racing cockpit with Sparco steering wheel and seats, eight-point roll cage and a RMR carbon fiber dash.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Chillin' In SoCal ]]> Ever since we saw the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe revealed live at the New York Auto Show, we've been keeping our eyes open for any of these potential Mustang-killers out testing in the wild. Now, thanks to one eagle-eyed forum fan-boy over at SoCalEuro, we've got this set of KGP-esque shots of the little-South-Korean-that-could rigorously running through the paces of a mini-mall parking lot spot in the land of movie stars and materialism.

The first thing that catches our eye, besides the missing fuel filler door, is the set of wheels on this car. Unlike the optional 19" rims worn by the show cars, these appear to be the 18" standard units. Maybe we're imagining things, but we think the split 5-spokes look a lot like flowers. Maybe we just need to see it in person. We'll also have to see if there will be any other optional rims, but if these do come as standard equipment, expect a lot of macho guys to throw on some aftermarket shoes — unless they're really into dainty feet. <![CDATA[ 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Revealed, Unofficially! ]]> Taking a quick break from the GM-gasm on the new El Camino of the past two days, it appears as though the Hyundai-hungry folks at the New Tiburon forums have blown a load of press shots out on to the web early on the new 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe before next week's New York Auto Show. Other than the hot shots, there doesn't appear to be much more to tell you. Well, based on one shot, it appears like the new kim-chee-crazy muscle car redlines at 6500 RPM, and, oh yes, it's one hot looking entry into the muscle car wars looking much different than the 2010 Hyundai Genesis RWD coupe concept we saw at the LA Auto Show last year. We're certainly looking forward to seeing it live on the show floor next week. Especially if they bring the same lovely lady they had in LA and who we've now affectionately named Genesis Priddy. All we know is this little deuce-door gets our thoughts all a-tingly. What about yours?

<![CDATA[ 2009 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Spotted Before New York Auto Show Reveal ]]> We saw the 2009 Hyundai Genesis Coupe in concept form out at the LA Auto Show this past year, and we'll be seeing the new hotness from Hyundai for real in the warm lights of the Javits Center at the New York Auto Show next month. The KGP boys have snapped themselves some shots of not only the exterior of the new little Genesis coupe, but also a small gallery of interior and engine shots — including one very hapless-looking engineer with a face that positively screams "You're not getting my kimchee, mister!" But, the shots do reveal some bad news for fans of manumatics — no paddle shifters on this bad little muscle rocket. Maybe you can hope for a V8? Full spy report from our sneaky shooters of all things camo after the jump.

We just caught the latest prototype for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, caught testing in Northern Sweden. Our latest look catches the fetching RWD coupe with some new, multi-spoke euro-inspired wheels. We also managed a couple new shots of the Coupe's interior, revealing and automatic transmission with the expected +/- slot for the shift stalk. No steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters are visible—somewhat surprising given the Coupe's upscale gene pool stemming from the recently-released Genesis sedan. Heated seats, however, are on the options list.

We also managed a good look at the rear seat accommodations, and they
look fairly acceptable for real, full-grown human use. Leg room,
while not ample, looks reasonable enough. Hyundai's new coupe will be
a strict four-seater, with rear buckets separated by two cup holders
and a central bin. So far, the only confirmed engine is a 2.0-liter
turbocharged four-cylinder engine. A V-6 is also likely, but a V-8—
however tantalizing—is reportedly a long-shot.
