@lilwillie heart clicks GM: Damn. You beat me to it. Seriously, Alfistead beat me to a comment on another thread. I leave for 1 hour and come back and all the good comments are taken. I guess this will force me to try harder.
There go the accountants. Now who's gonna design the cars? The Corvette guys? They don't know how to design a SleepMachine suspension! The Europeans? They can't design MultiFlex cupholders!
It's sad but in a way I am glad I turned down the offer from GM about a year and a half ago as an engineer. And they paid really well too (about 3k more than my next best offer). But I promised myself that I wouldn't work with a mainstream auto OEM for atleast 5 years after I graduate.
@Formerlythegreatestdriver: I graduated at the end of 2006. I knew that I wanted to go into automotive engineering, but the writing on the wall was more like huge graffiti in the bathroom at that point, so I did a fairly last minute concentration change to aerospace and have been employed ever since.
@nataku83: I graduated this year as an electrical engineer. I too wanted to work in the automobile industry, but realized that was a horrible, depressing dead end proposition years ago.
Unfortunately, the economic train wreck has killed the job market for fresh grads. To think, if I hadn't co-oped to gain "valuable" experience, I would have graduated last year and would have a job right now, provided it didn't remotely have anything to do with cars. Dammit.
If FromaBuick6 has to watch one more Chevy commercial, he's going to punch Howie Long in the face was starred

How come when the union guys get laid off, everybody flips out. We have strikes, protests, big fat guys standing at the side of the road holding signs and grilling meat.
Where are the protests when white collar workers get laid off?

And second some divisions of GM had almost as many MANAGERS as workers. You kinda get the idea that you are expendable in a situation like that.
