Merkel, Gaddafi, Sarkozy and other leaders looking ridiculous below.

We're obviously big fans of the GEM, a nice alternative for areas where a golf cart would look out-of-place and a car isn't ideal. The concept of a FIAT-branded one, a possible result of the FIAT/Chrysler merger, is also interesting. But it just seems so unstatesmanlike compared to Cadillac One.

Beats the hell out of trying to run next to a freaking Cadillac.

She's hoping to speed away from any surprise backrubs.

Smile for the cameras Colonol Gaddafi.

Oh, Sarkozy could make anything look stylish.

This may be one of the few Chrysler products FIAT is going to want to brand for itself.

<![CDATA[Peapod Mobility Is The New Chrysler GEM Peapod]]> Chrysler has such faith in Peapod, their iPodesque electric car, they've decided to help move the idea forward, removing all references to GEM or Chrysler and creating a new company: Peapod Mobility.

While speaking to Adweek, Peapod creator and Chrysler Chief Innovation Office Peter Arnell revealed Chrysler has created another wholly-owned but completely separate company dedicated to making electric vehicles to be called Peapod Mobility. Formerly, the Peapod was to be sold by our awesome friends at GEM.

The first vehicle from Peapod Mobility will obviously be the Peapod, a cute Neighborhood Electric Vehicle with a 25 MPH top speed, big toothy grin, $12,500 price tag and a surprisingly high-level of attractive and innovative design for a Chrysler product. Future plans include the possibility of a two-seater, van and a Peapod-amino, as well as a City Electric Vehicle capable of a top speed higher than what you can travel in a school zone. It must be a good idea, look how wide it's smiling.

<![CDATA[Naked Jalopnik: The Meanest Thing We Did At The Detroit Auto Show]]> Much like our comrades over at Gizmodo, we believe no trade show is complete without a little mischief. Here's ours for the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

We strap a HD camera to our Mobile Command Center and rage through the Detroit Auto Show.

The Japanese cowered near their Prii. The Germans attempted a peace offering of beer and currywurst. The Chinese tried a bribe of leaded pens. But even after all of these efforts, the Jalopnik Mobile Command Center could not be stopped. Follow us as we generally terrorize what's left of the Detroit Auto Show. We even almost mowed over Senator Corker.

Good luck trying to get the theme song out of your head.

The Jalopnik Detroit Auto Show Mobile Command Center, or DASMC, is the pinnacle of auto show journalistic technology. Based on the all-electric 2008 GEM e2, we've taken it a step further and turned it into a crucial information hub to bring you what you want from the Detroit Auto Show experience — right friggin' now.

For starters, the GEM e2's seriously flexibility on the auto show floor, and why shouldn't it? Just take a look at the 2008 GEM e2's vitals:

-100% battery electric, no gas needed.
-Environmentally friendly with no emissions.
-Ideal for short trips to work, school or just around the neighborhood.
-Recharge in 6-8 hours using a standard 110 volt outlet.
-30 mile range with a top speed of 25 MPH.
-Cost of ownership is only 1/3 that of comparable gasoline vehicle.

But that's not the only reason. Although we'll have more on our new ride later tonight and tomorrow, we've also added a UConnect portable, broadband WiFi network, laptop charging station, blue spinning cop light, Bond-esque smoke machine and enough neon lights to give you epilepsy. Capable of driving up to 30 miles on a single charge, we've got more than enough juice to peruse every hot new vehicle and a few ugly ones. No reason to hide, as you won't hear it sneaking up until its already too late.

Want one like it? Sorry, it's one-of-a-kind. But here are the folks who helped make this a reality — so go buy your own:

<![CDATA[GEM Peapod Photoshop Contest, Rock The Vote: Round One, Group One]]> OK, put down your pens, pencils and mice — time's up. <![CDATA[GEM Peapod Photoshop Contest: Win An iPod Touch!]]> When we kicked off the original GEM Peapod Photoshop contest, it was more as a lark than anything else, but the folks on the GEM Peapod team discovered it and thought it was a brilliant idea. So brilliant, in fact, that although Chrysler isn't a sponsor of the contest, they've graciously offered to supply an iPod Touch as a grand prize for the winner in exchange for us telling you "If you'd like more information on the GEM Peapod, click here." Seems fair to us. Now, considering the ante has been substantially upped from a virtual pat on the back to a free piece of sweet tech, we figured it was only fair to re-open the contest for all you creative types out there. All the old submissions (on time and late) will remain eligible, so no need to worry if you made one for the fun of it. Feel free to use any image of the Peapod we have hosted on this site or elsewhere. Submit entries to me at ben@jalopnik.com and please include in the subject line "GEM Peapod Photoshop Contest." Make sure to name your entry something unique so we can keep them all straight. Standard contest rules apply, submissions will be accepted until Monday, September 29, 2008, at 11:59 PM. Good luck, and may the best Photoshop win!

We're not going to sway the judging, but there are definitely some standouts. Anyway, good luck, and may the best photoshoppers win.

<![CDATA[Shiny, Happy Chrysler EV Really Called GEM Peapod]]> We got a look at the Chrysler "Peapod" this morning, though at the time we didn't know it was actually the GEM Peapod. The Peapod is the latest concept set up for a debut in GEM's 2009 lineup, which also gets an updated and greenwashed name - GreenEcoMobility (blech). If you're into the details of an electric, four-passenger, 25 MPH, 30-mile-range overgrown golf cart, there are plenty of 'em in the official press release below.

Other innovations include ergonomic, supportive, mesh seating, which enables air circulation for comfort and uses eco-friendly recycled and recyclable materials.

“We have evolved the GEM design language to better reflect its eco-friendly performance and its upbeat, positive image,” said Peter Arnell, Chrysler LLC’s Chief Innovation Officer who led the design process. “These vehicles use no gasoline and emit no pollutants. So whether it’s a trip around the neighborhood or the drive to school or work, the GEM Peapod is the ideal way to contribute to a greener planet, and a healthy lifestyle."

GEM will also get a new name – GreenEcoMobility, Arnell said, signifying the company’s goal to redefine environmentally friendly vehicles.

Chrysler will show the styling model for the production 2009 GEM at the company’s headquarters Sept. 23. The re-designed GEM is scheduled for production in 2009.

The Peapod represents the first in a series of product launches that will redefine the future of electric vehicles, said the company’s CEO Bruce Coventry.

“With this next generation GEM, we will broaden the market for this clean, emission-free technology,” Coventry said.

In addition to the 2009 GEM Peapod neighborhood electric vehicle, Coventry said, GEM has plans to market a new light-duty, battery electric commercial truck and a larger city electric vehicle, with more range and performance. These vehicles are scheduled for production within the next year, he said.

Today’s GEM is the nation’s No. 1 zero-emission electric vehicle, with 38,000 produced and in use. GEM vehicles are used in settings such as city centers, planned communities, military bases, college campuses, corporate and commercial centers, and city, state and national parks.

“Over the past decade, GEM has established itself as the nation’s leading battery-powered, pure electric vehicle,” said GEM President and COO Rick Kasper. “We have done that by responding to the needs of our customers for safety, utility, versatility and performance in environmentally friendly vehicles."

GEM cars are available in six models: two-, four- and six-passenger cars and three utility vehicles. GEM neighborhood electric vehicles have a top speed of 25 miles per hour, a range of up to 30 miles per charge (battery charge is extended through use of regenerative braking) and are street legal in more than 40 states. The vehicles can be recharged anytime, anywhere with a standard 110-volt outlet. Recharge time is approximately six to eight hours.

By replacing conventional vehicles, GEM vehicles can reduce overall emissions of pollutants, particularly during short trips when conventional vehicles create the most tailpipe emissions. GEM vehicles have been driven a combined 200 million miles and averted more than 150 tons of pollutants from reaching the air, while saving 10 million gallons of gasoline.
