Once inside the parking lot they were easy pickin's for the state troopers, slamming into a parked car. What compelled them to race at speeds above 130 MPH to get to a Chili's? Was it a Mitsubishi Galant GTZ? According to reports, police found some Mary Jane in the car, which leads us to believe a plate of Southwestern Egg Rolls may be the real culprit. [MSNBC]

<![CDATA[ Where Do You Want To Be? In A 1986 Mitsubishi, Of Course! ]]> Remember the Mitsubishi Cordia? The Tredia? Where are all those Cordia Turbos today? Of all the nameplates shown in this ad, only the Galant is still around 22 years later… but that spirit of the 80s will live on forever in the Mitsubishi theme song!

<![CDATA[ Sapporo Brings Touch of Mitsu-Malaise To Oregon ]]>
The streets of Eugene, Oregon (and PaulN's camera) gave us the '68 Saab 96 few weeks ago, and now PaulN has found us another interesting old Eugenemobile. The Plymouth Sapporo was yet another of Chrysler's attempts to fend off Malaise collapse by slapping its nameplates on various Mitsubishis, but (unlike the Colt) they're just about impossible to find nowadays. Make the jump for an additional gallery and PaulN's description.

Either a '78, '79 or '80. Also sold as Dodge Challenger. It's a Mitsubishi Galant Lambda, or Scorpion. RWD; 2.6 Astron 4 cylinder with silent shaft and MCA Jet (similar to Hondas CvCC) extra valve for emission control. It was Japanese version of the "luxury personal car"; counterpart to Chrysler Cordoba, et al. It was also the predecessor to the Starion, which shared the same basic platform/chassis, and engine (turbo, of course). It did not sell very well. This example has 45k miles on the odo, and looks very well cared-for. Textured vinyl roof, targa band, opera lights, pure Japanese Malaise-mobile.

<![CDATA[ Wagon Battle! Subaru Legacy Vs. Mitsubishi Legnum ]]> What would Maximum Wagon Day be without a wagon battle? And nobody does track battles better than Best Motoring. This classic clip showcases two JDM wagons for the Japanese family that's really on-the-go; a Subaru Legacy GT-B and Mitsubishi Legnum VR-4 circa 1996. It's too bad they didn't include a Nissan Stagea, but even these two haulers are entertainment enough. Both have twin-turbos, AWD, a 5spd manual 'box, and more interior room than some Tokyo sleeping pods. Check out all that weight-transfer-induced oversteer on the slalom course, and enjoy the fierce 3-lap wagon battle action on the Tsukuba circuit.

<![CDATA[ Chicago Auto Show: 2009 Mitsubishi Galant, Three Varieties of Boring ]]> In case you were wondering, Mitsubishi did bust out a trio of updated Galants on Thursday, and we were monumentally underwhelmed. The Galant Sport, Galant Sport V6, and the Galant Ralliart all took a bow. The cars are available with a mix and match of the 2.4 L 4 cyl MiVEC, 3.8 L V6, and 3.8L V6 equipped with MiVEC, traction control, and Nav system as well as external indicators of the various performance levels.

Though the outside is iffy, the insides aren't bad, and the sound system choices are respectable, with a 360W Rockford Acoustics designed 8 speaker system, 7" touchscreen, and 6 months of free Sirius radio. We don't want to bust on the Galants too much because that would be mean, but at this point, prettying up the Galant is like putting lipstick on a pig. In case you were wondering why there are only pics of two cars, we're assuming the Galant Sport (sans V6) would have put the gathered masses to sleep.

<![CDATA[ PCH, Japanese AWD Turbo Edition: Celica All-Trac or Galant VR-4? ]]> It turns out that nearly 60% of readers surveyed prefer a '58 Bel Air to a yellow Corvette when they're contemplating a Tom Waits-themed eternity in Project Car Hell. And, now that Romeo is done bleeding, let's take a look at today's Choose Your Eternity candidates. We have a tough time finding Japanese cars that are both sufficiently cool and hellish enough for this series, but today we've managed to find a couple cars from Nippon that get the job done. They're turbocharged, they're all-wheel-drive, and they've probably had the crap beat out of them by previous owners. Thanks (and a Project Car Hell Tipster T-shirt) to Schnog for the tip!

Celicas with All-Trac AWD and turbocharging are a blast to drive, but they're quite rare- you'll need to drop close to ten grand for a nice one. But you're a barbarian with a wrench in your pocket, and you know you can save a bundle by starting with an All-Trac that needs a little bit of work. Say, this 1991 Celica All-Trac, for example; while we don't know the reserve price, it's only been bid up to $1,200 at the time of this writing. The seller says "the olny thing wrong with it is it needs a shift control cable, and the bolt for the front sway bar," so there ya go! A few body parts, a little elbow grease, and it'll be good as new!

Toyota, Toyota, Toyota... sure, they're well built and reliable and all that, but everyone's got one! That's why you're a Mitsubishi sort of masochist aficionado, so you can stand out from the crowd. Yes, from the Zero all the way up to this 1991 Galant VR-4, the triple-diamond logo has meant "quality" for decades. This car has the same 4G63 engine and powertrain used in the Talon/Eclipse, but the wrapper is total stealthy sleeper, and this example looks pretty clean in the photos. What fun you'll have with it... once you get it running right, of course. According to the seller: "NOW FOR THE BAD THIS CAR WILL NEED A NEW FUEL PUMP CAR DOES RUN AND DRIVE BUT ONCE U HIT BOOST IT CUTS OFF THE COMPUTER IS THROWING A FUEL PUMP CODE," which means you'll have some fuel-system woes, starting with the fuel pump and ending... well, that's why it's Project Car Hell!

<![CDATA[ We're Going Around Picking Up Our Jaw: SUPER BRUCE POTENTIAL! ]]> amgpotential.jpg

Dear Brian Scotto, if you weren't our hero before for owning a Quantum Coupe or being really, really goddamn tall or pulling obscene donuts in Beverly Hills in a Z06, you certainly are now. We mean, really. An AMG Galant? Admittedly, an Affalterbach-massaged, Hammer-hammering Starionamino might likely be the ultimate Jalopnik meme-mobile, but we'll take this lesser bait just the same. Sometimes, near-perfection is just as good as perfection itself. Click over and bask in the DCX-incest glory.

<![CDATA[ Chicago Premiere: Mitsubishi Galant Ralliart ]]>

Mitsubishi launched its latest Ralliart tuner model, built on the bones of its restyled 2007 Gallant mid-sized sedan. It's probably the most understated of the Ralliart concepts, looks-wise, and powered by the usual suspect — a MIVEC-tweaked 258-hp 3.8-liter V6 engine. A sport suspension and 18" alloys belie a relatively un-motorsports-like zero-to-60 time in the seven-second range. No surprise, then, that it's no concept. Mitsu will offer the Galant Ralliart alongside the model's three additional trim levels. The Ralliart edition also gets standard perforated leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, automatic climate control system, power glass sunroof and aluminum pedals, plus factory-installed Rockford Acoustic Design premium audio system. The older kids will dig it.

<![CDATA[ Mitsubishi 380 Launched in Sydney ]]> mitsubishi_380.jpg

Mitsubishi's Galant for the 'roo-baiting set, the 380, enjoyed its official launch ceremony at the Australian International motor show in Sydney today, or as we like to call it, "yesterday." Mitsubishi Australia CEO, Tom Philips called the car "the future of Mitsubishi in Australia." Great, but worth 20 hours in coach, jammed next to some guy named "Dersch" who's in the throes of a SARS-related respiratory illness? Tough one.
