What? Who thought it was a good idea to put a life preserver vest inside that engine compartment? Where do these people come from? And who pays money to do something like that to a finely engineered automobile? My eyes hurt.

You know, sometimes, it really not about engine power figures. It's about the near flawless execution and integration of the car as being more than the sum of its parts, which is something that the M3 excels at in stock form.

Why mess with a good thing?

@pauljones: Because who wouldn't want a shiny orange plastic engine cover under the hood?

It really boils down to a game of "my overpriced German sportscar is better than your overpriced German sportscar."

The black roof trend continues. "Hey, everyone, let's paint the most precarious part of the car a really dark, glossy color! It'll keep the interior nice and extra-toasty PLUS show all the sap, birdshit, and water spots that fall onto the car. I'm sure it'll sell like mad!"

@Ash78: Ash, dude, it's carbon fiber. CF is cool looking plus it (albeit very minimally) lowers the car's center of gravity versus the standard steel roof...

@Rock517: So all these housewives puttering around town in their Acura TL and Mercedes CLK models have carbon fiber roofs?

I'm not completely doubting it here, but I am doubting it on mass-market models I see every day. Off to do some reading...

@Ash78: First three pages of Google results for "black roof car" are all about vinyl wraps and paint.

Not a single mention of CF roofing. I still think it's a cosmetic fad.

    Ggggggggggggg G-Power.

Why did they use carbon fiber for the interior?

I thought the Jalopnik commentariat decided that unicorn skins and eagle beaks were the materials of choice.

That being said- I'd prefer a turbo over a supercharger.

Speaking of weird tuner BMWs. I saw a new 5 series with body cladding to make it look like an M5. It was all white except the door handles were all blue. It had a license plate that read "BEMYWIF".

    Like:

    - The color.

    - The rear wing: It helps hiding the original shape of the trunk.

    Don't like:

    - The price. I'd rather have a Ferrari 599.

    - The giant wheels with no body clearance.

    - The very concept of tuning what is already a carefully engineered vehicle.

    - The"vaporwareness" of it: no video means it did not happen...
