    I'm not a fan of the warmed over Grand Am grill but the sideview of the G8 is handsome. I just don't know if Pontiac is on anyone's shopping list anymore. The Aztex, the Transport/Montana, G3 and others have killed this brand. I'm not saying Pontiac should go but GM really needs to reshape this division. Just keep the G8 and Sol Solstice and only power cars. Then maybe in three or four years Pontiac might go on people's shopping list. The G8 is a car that's just a bit too hard to fall in love with.

    With the LS3 motor as standard on this car....only your wallet limits the power potential. And suspension parts are starting to appear. It seems this car will not be an orphan like the GTO.......with mainly only small block Chevy engine parts avaiable.

    I found the problem! It looks like Pontiac! Seriously, it still sports the pseudo-kidney grill that was on the 1980's grand am I lusted after as a teenager. Sadly, it didn't look good then, and still doesn't. What killed the GTO? The bland Pontiac styling applied to an exciting Holden (Yes, I know there are other reasons). The G8 shares the same problem. It is really an astonishing car, albiet the interior should offer more (ie: navigation), but the it's a shame that Pontiac refuses to take on a new look in favor of the mullet, whitewashed jeans, and Firehouse T-shirt. It's no longer funny, now it's just sad.

    @Bronx Mowgli Miscellanea: You're right, but there's more.


    There's no excuse for them not pulling this move back in the 90s when gas was cheap. They still had the same pool of Aussie parts to draw from, and they were still attempting to claim on the Excitement™ thing.


    Had they (re)built a reputation then, we wouldn't be having this discussion about whether or not Pontiac is a relevant brand.

    I wonder if like an SS, GXP, or M performance package manufactures will ever offer an economy package. Like a G8 Green Package. It would offer a small 4 cylinder, maybe an electric assist motor (hybrid), maybe more aerodynamic (ugly) fascias, possibly those low resistance tires, more economical gear ratios.


    Basically just things like that that allow you to turn a normal car into a much more fuel efficient one without needing an entirely new platform.

    @Fourstring85: Chevy has XFE versions of a few of their cars that match what you're describing, short of a different engine size or electric motor.


    The biggest problem is that and the fuel savings don't offset the costs unless you do >50k miles/year

    @Mad_Science: Yeah I suppose your right. I guess (like most of America) we forget or don't know that GM has some pretty fuel efficient cars in it's crowded line up.

    @Fourstring85: Does Opel have a clean-ish diesel they could use? A good clean diesel V6 in a full-size car like this could have potential.

    @LandofMinos, is begging congress for more hotpants for GM: DOD's already available on the G8 GT, so you'll probably get it pretty soon. I understand it has more to do with Aussie transport rules than anything else. Or something.

    @Bronx Mowgli Deartháir: Ah, no. The Aussie and Brit versions have a different engine tune to the G8 and DOD was in development for Pontiac while the first Holdens were leaving the dealerships. Holden will have DOD from next year.


    We already have DOD on our Chrysler based cars.

    If this was 7 years ago - when I was in the market for a 5-series-type sedan, this would have been my top choice. Now, if Pontiac could turn this into a true wagon/crossover with 5 or 7 seats with as much performance as possible, I'd bite.

    @Mad_Science: Saw a red one getting about the other day, probably test drivers from the local HSV dealership. It brought a tear of joy that we have such a great looking wagon.


    It's no RS6 Avant, but at least it doesn't look like the unsightly Audi.

    Not that Wikipedia is the most reliable fountain of information out there, but it appears that the FWD Cobalt SS can lap 8 seconds faster. Given is has less wait, but FWD with about half the horsepower, what gives?

    @wonderbrad: I wonder if GM even knows what to make of this, promotionally.


    It's like an elementary school art project and GM is the autistic kid who finishes the best, most detailed project of all, but the rest of the class moved on to something else 3 days ago and won't pay any attention anymore (ie, fuel efficiency is the new king). And he's too shy to raise his hand for fear of scorn.
