Fritz if your only going to sell this car to fleets, I might just decide NOT to buy any more GM cars. That is how much this could PISS me off. If the COPS get it, the American consumer better get it, or maybe I can figure out a way to special order one...

@Christopher Noel: I decided to not buy GM cars a long, long time ago and nothing they do with this car is going to change that. I know I'm not the only one that thinks that and that's a big reason why the G8 bombed in the first place and why it would bomb again as a Caprice.

    The G8 WILL LIVE!

No on second thought- the G8 is dead

THE G8 WILL LIVE ON AS A CAPRICE!

No no- the G8 she is dead.

THE G* WILL LIVE ON AS A COP CAR! YOU CAN BUY ONE WITH 200K ON THE CLOCK AT A POLICE AUCTION IN 5 YEARS!

So what next? Evil Fritz will screw us out of that one by demanding all Holden sourced police cars be destroyed once the service life has expired.

Damn you Fritz- Damn you to the burning hot fires of heck.

A dreamer would hope that this is a back-door way to sneak the car past the gummint overlords after which it would take only a small step to sell the car to the public, much like DeLorean found a way to sneak the original GTO past the GM brass.

I just checked and there are currently three G8 GTs available on the CarMax website right now; one is a 2009 with only 7K on it.

If you want one — um, you go and get one?

@High Speed Indeed: Agreed. By the time they go to auction, cop cars may have less than 100K worth of wear on the suspension, but five times as much on the parts that move while it's idling.

And yes, there's also the interior: crushed foam in the drivers seat from donut-fattened butts, and all the issues you just mentioned in the back. Although, if you're lucky, it will have that unpadded fiberglass seating in the back (the kind with the cutout handcuff wells). That's kinda cool, and way more hose-out-able.

So what's the advantage of a 9C1 over, say, a 94-96 Impala? I'm guessing that it's cheaper you could tear it down and rebuild it from scratch and not feel bad about modifiying it. Am I on the right track?

So they'll sell it in the U.S.A., and they'll support it with parts and service in the U.S.A., but they just refuse to sell it to ordinary citizens. Even though Americans would buy 20,000 of them a year; but it's not like GM is in business to sell cars or anything like that. What a bunch of assholes. Fuck you, Fritz.

It's been my suspicion all along that the reason GM killed Pontiac has nothing to do with this division being profitable and this one being unprofitable, but is because of some nasty corporate politics. It doesn't make any sense otherwise. How much does it cost to put a nameplate on a product? And who in his right mind would throw away historically great names like "GTO" or "Grand Prix" or "Catalina"?

No, my completely unsubstantiated guess is, somebody high up in GM management has, or had, a feud with some bigwigs in the Pontiac division or with some UAW guy representing Pontiac workers, so they decided to yank the rug out from under them, and screw the customers, and screw the stockholders too.

@S3L3SC: The only problem I see with that theory is that the G8, even in high-performance trim, still gets fairly decent mileage for such a big, powerful car (17/25 or 15/24). In comparison the BMW 535i gets 17/26, the 550i gets 15/23 (auto) or 15/22 (manual) and the M5 gets 11/17. Also compare this with the best-selling car in the U.S.A., the Ford F150, which gets 16/20 with the V6 and 14/18 with the V8. (I call it "car" because as you know, the majority of F150 owners use theirs to carry passengers - usually one passenger - over paved roads, not to climb mountains or transport big loads.)
