    It's kind of a demographic inevitability. Modern muslim families, desiring a better economic future for their families, can't do so in many of their repressive homelands. They traditionally have looked to their colonial masters as beacons of hope. Thus emigration to Europe has been the easiest and most common method of improving their families. Nowhere has this been more true than in France, which has one of the longest and most congenial relationships with the muslim world. Liberal immigration to France has unfortunately worsened an oversupply of labor. Unemployment is sky high. Children born of this wave of immigration have little to look forward to, except a life of government handouts and marginalization in suburban public housing cellblocks. Sarkozy has his hands full, trying to change things to give these people hope, while at the same time enforcing traditional French cultural values and law. Although France has long social traditions which have for many decades provided a stabilizing force on the world stage, in many ways, it has more in common with Russia or Belarus than the rest of Europe. I hope that the coming years see these muslim youth enculturated with European sensibilities, and don't instead document the descent of one of the most democratic of countries into a hell of muslim extremism and intolerance.

    @DoctorNine: Does the Sharia law say anything about pate de fore gras? That counld be just the spark this rebellion needs!

    I guess that 35 hour work week gives them more time to go out and produce more demand for durable goods. Say what you want about high unemployment and inscrutable Gallic economic policies, they seem to have developed their own answer to the Carpocolypse.

    This seems pretty contrariwise to the usual French joke material. The usual "surrender-eating cheese monkey" doesn't seem to fit. Maybe they're turning over a new leaf.
