If my assumption is correct, and "Team Stop, Drop, and RickRoll" is in fact blasting Rick Astley's music from the pits, has someone threatened to kill them yet?
@mechimike: I noticed that, too. In enduro racing being consistent and staying out of trouble (mechanically and with the officials) can be much more important than having a big powerplant under the hood.
Nice observation. You have to wonder if the drivers in the other cars also wore themselves out physically at the start of the run, thus make mistakes. Fuel mileage, break downs, driver changes. So many things to think about.
Enduro is a bitch, even for the guys in the pits watching.
@engineerd: Yeah, that's our strategy. 1.8 litres of cast iron block, carbureted, points-ignition, rear-wheel-drive fury. I so can't frigging wait until April!
@lilwillie: That's pretty much all true. The one point I would differ with you on is fuel mileage. Even if you have a minuscule 10 gallon tank and average 10 mpg, that still gives you a 100 mile range, or nearly 2 hours of being out on the track. From my own experience, 30-45 minutes at a stretch out there is plenty enough for you to get worn out and start making dumb moves. Then again, I'm not Steve McQueen. But still, this is supposed to be fun, and eventually your teammates are gonna start grumbling about you hogging all the wheel time!
I loved that 1600 from the moment I set eyes upon it. I couldn't place it as either a 1600 or a 2002- the only think I could tell was that it was an earlier, round-taillight car. The fact that it has the smaller, 1600cc plant (that is, unless there was a swap) makes it all the more stupendous. Here we have cars with engines from 1.6 litres all the way up to 302 cubic inches, all within a few laps of each other after +/- 200 laps and ~12 hours worth of racing.
This (LeMons) is truly the fairest, most interesting, and most entertaining form of racing there is. Bar None.
What an awesome second (third? fourth?) life for a rusted-out 1600 that would probably otherwise die a slow death, dissolving into a pile of its own orange oxidation out in a field.
@cyclopticgaze: The first time I saw the old beaters of the 24HoL belching their way around the track, my first reaction was: "Well, that's the end of the road for those cars" And in a way, that is sad. Cars, like people, lead very interesting lives. The longer they've been around, the more humanity becomes intertwined with their existence. And right up until the end, they can still be thrashed mightily and go out with a bang. I think this is an important lesson for us as people. Rather than withering away in assisted-living facilities or subsisting in cucumber-like comas hooked up to myriad pumpers and suckers, we should, we MUST live life to the fullest, every minute, right up until the end. My 92 year old grandfather is living proof that this is possible. And when he finally falls off the ladder while re-tarring his roof or has a heart attack while chasing squirrels through his garden, I will shed tears, but they will be tears of joy for a life well lived, and my own resolution to emulate him will be strengthened.
I guess, in a small way, this is why we race a Volvo Amazon. Do not go quiet into that great night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light!

- The #45 car has a faster "best lap time" than the #1 car.
- 8 of the top 45 cars have faster "best lap times" than the #1 car.
- 5 cars in the top 45 have "fastest lap times" a good ~15 seconds slower than the #45 car, which has the fastest "best lap time" of the top 45 cars.
The race is not always to the swiftest.
