Convertible Prius Aims For Economy And Style, Misses

Though we found the Cadillac CTS Convertible to be rather fetching, it didn't stand up to some of the four-door convertibles our industrious commentariat located. That being said, we're a little disappointed none of you found this Prius by NCE, which is both a hybrid and a four-door convertible. We're curious to see what kind of fuel economy this things get, as convertibles tend to ruin the carefully crafted, low-resistance shells of other cars.

2008 BMW M3, Part Three

Why you should buy this car:
You like power, speed and reliability all wrapped up in a compact, five-seat package. You accept no imitations. You like driving. You loved your Porsche 911, but need room for baby seats. You don't need to brag.

Why you shouldn't buy this car:
You're likely to ask "What do you mean it doesn't come in 'P***Y Magnet' Yellow?" You think girls are impressed by the size of your wing. You think the internal combustion engine is evil and loathe it in all of its forms, but especially the finest. You're a believer in that whole 'Speed Kills' thing.

2008 BMW M3, Part Two

Exterior Design: ***
The 2008 BMW M3 sedan, depending on whom you ask, is either ugly or boring. We think it's a bit of both. But, packing supercar performance into a compact package that won't turn heads is definitely a positive thing. If anything, the M3 isn't subtle enough, we'd take ours — and boy how we'd take one — sans bumps and bulges. We'll add a star for any buyer savvy enough to order theirs with the badge delete option checked.

Interior Design: ****
One part subtle mixed with one part tacky, the 2008 is classic M3. Any car that combines classic BMW-type faces and design language with both red and blue stitching is a winner in our book. We'd specify either black or white for the leather, but the as-tested red is certainly, umm, eye catching. As with any BMW, the controls are precisely where your hands or feet expect to find them, making this interior work better than it looks.

2008 BMW M3, Part One

The 2008 BMW M3 puts the world around it in fast forward. No, this isn't some function hidden deep within the still befuddling iDrive or a secret performance setting achieved by hitting B, A, B, A, Select, Start; just an inherent ability to twist the world over its power dome and past its windscreen at a nearly impossible speed. Neither is this the kind of garden-variety performance achieved by the average big engine, small car formula. Remember how cheesy '80s action shows would speed up the tape during chase scenes? The resultant mix of unbelievably flat cornering and inexplicably rapid oncoming traffic just ended up being unbelievable and inexplicable. But not in this new M3.

Is Nissan Considering A GT-R Sedan For Infiniti?

The lads over at Motor Trend have it that Nissan is "studying the possibility" of a four-door GT-R for the Infiniti brand. This reminds us of the time Laura Berkalter was "studying the possibility" of going out with us. While it didn't work it out with Laura, this is a rumor that might have legs. The sedan could carry over a lot of the components from the current GT-R, such as the twin-turbo V6, AWD setup and transmission. As the price could easily be in excess of $80,0000, making it an Infiniti is the only easy way to avoid the Phaeton syndrome. More »

SEMA 2007: AEV Hemi-fies Wrangler Unlimited JK For SEMA!

The boys at American Expedition Vehicles plan to show a custom Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK in the Chrysler display at SEMA 2007. What's so trick about it? Well, our friends at the Michigan and Montana based custom shop took their experience performing hundreds of Hemi conversions on the Jeep Wrangler TJ to have some fun with the new four-door from "The New Chrysler." So, instead of the stock 3.8-liter V6 under the hood, the Mopar-mavens at AEV have shaved away enough room to wedge a 6.4-liter Hemi into the engine bay. So, instead of 204 HP, this bad boy four-door's gonna get 525 horses. In addition to showing off the Hemi-powered four-door rock crawler at SEMA next week, AEV's set to announce the availability of turnkey 5.7-liter and 6.1-liter HEMI conversions for the new Wrangler JK. As someone who's driven one of their HEMI-powered Brute conversions and seen a great number of their amazing pieces of work on the road (like the above four-door Wrangler Rubicon) I can say my pants are tightening at the mere thought of seeing this in person. That's right — a full-on Hemi-gasm. Full press release after the jump and the gallery below filled with AEV awesomeness. [via AEV]

Report: Passat-Based Volkswagen "Four Door Coupe" Coming to Detroit '08

Considering the Phaeton debacle (or genius, depending on your definition) Volkswagen's setting a lower bar with its next luxury model — a coupe-like four-door that's been in the rumor mill since the Grover Cleveland administration. Now, according to German mag AutomobilWoche (translation: Automobile Wookie), the yet-unnamed model will debut at the 2008 Detroit auto show next January. It'll be based on the Passat and — in Germany — will start at around €30,000 with a 160hp 1.8L TSI motor and a six-speed manual, a 140-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel for €32,500 and over €40,000 for a 300 hp V6 FSI version with all-wheel-drive and DSG. Though the base prices are midpoint, word is the cars will run much higher with options boxes checked. (Note: Spec image shown.) [UPDATE: "Spec" means it's a Photoshopped estimation of what it might look like.] More »

Spy Photos: 2009 Audi A7

The line expansion at Audi marches on toward an inevitable crowded house by the end of the decade. According to spies for World Car Fans, Audi's planning to add an A7 four-door "coupe" to its odd-numbered mix by 2009. You'd hardly tell from this test mule, but the model will reportedly compete with the Mercedes CLS — and a new entry from Jaguar — in the new segment of sedans whose low door jambs are most likely to split a passenger's head on entry. Next-Generation GTO Could Be a Four-Door Coupe

Edmunds Inside Line is reporting a new GTO could be ready by mid-2008, possibly as a (wait for it) four-door coupe. Pontiac has yet to decide on where the new model would be assembled — and what role GM's Holden division will play. What seems to be sure, however is that GM is finally settling on putting its Zeta rear-drive platform into production, in a less expensive, higher-volume version — which has come to be known as "Zeta lite." (Of course, since the Holden-developed Zeta is already a "lite" version of the high-end Sigma platform, the new version could be called Sigma-lite-lite, but we digress). Though Holden is discontinuing the Monaro, on which the current GTO is based, after 2006, its new Commodore could be the first model built on the new, modified Zeta platform. More »
