Detroit Auto Show: Nissan Forum Concept Parenting Tech, Explained

My quick question-and-answer session with one of the Nissan Forum's product managers didn't give me a chance to see everything that the Nissan Forum is packing. So I sent our intrepid video reported back to capture more features on this conceptual parenting-mobile. I can't believe I missed the the Bose speakers and subwoofer—for, you know, when you want to turn that quietly idling soccer-mom transport into a throbbing soccer-mom cocktail hour (while parked, of course).

Detroit Auto Show: Nissan Forum Concept Family Vehicle Has Time Out Button, Microwave, Nanny Cam

Modestly described as "the ultimate family vehicle," the Nissan Forum Concept is pretty much a rolling home away from home. This capacious vehicle features a couple key features to accommodate any growing brood. My favorite option is the "Time Out" button located on the steering wheel. It will terminate the broadcast of all types of media and entertainment being consumed in the backseat. Kids acting up? Turn that Hannah Montana diva off for good! Parents can monitor their offspring (as well as anything else they might be transporting) with a nanny cam integrated into the roof above the center console. No longer will Dad have to look over his shoulder while simultaneously parallel parking and frantically BlackBerrying. The center console microwave is perplexing. My apartment smells for days after simply popping popcorn—I can't imagine what a few dozen chicken nuggets would do to "that new car smell." Oh well, at least the center row of seats can spin to face each other and the binnacle contains motion controls.

Detroit Auto Show: Nissan Reveals "Revolutionary" Forum Minivan Concept

Nissan's long strip tease over the new Forum concept is finally over — we now can show you the official pictures and details of what we'll be seeing live and in person at the Detroit Auto Show next month. We had a chance to touch the new Forum in Vegas at an embargoed event one evening and we can tell you, it's — umm — a minivan. Yeah, let's be honest, it's hard to get excited about a concept minivan. And although we applaud Nissan for wanting to design a concept vehicle that's unique and different, no matter what hyperbolic verbiage you use — whether it's "the next revolution in family transportation" or a "family passenger vehicle" — it's still a minivan. But hey, they've done a really good job of proving they've got some technology that could step their own bar up to compete with Chrysler. I mean check out those seats — they actually swivel and stuff! But somehow we think a design that de-emphasizes a B-pillar is probably not the best idea for the safety-minded minivan buyer. But what do we know, right? Fully breathless press release after the jump.

Detroit Auto Show: Nissan Reveals Hot Forum Concept Backseat Action

What you see here is the latest in a string of drawings of the new Nissan Forum concept minivan revealed by the company. You'll notice the Chrysler-esque revolving middle seat, a feature we imagine will be standard on all minivans over the next few years. But whereas the Chrysler minivan seats are revolving captain's chairs, this looks to be an entire swiveling bench. Oh, and there's going to be a microwave oven. Pizza Bagels! Nissan Forum Concept Interior Drawings

We've mentioned the Nissan Forum Concept before, which is going to debut at the the Detroit Auto Show and give us some hints as to where the next Quest is going to be. In addition to the radical styling, the Mommy wagon is going to be packed with kid/dad/driver distracting technologies such as an advanced Bose Media System with proximity sensor-based information controller and a one-button muting system for when the kids are in danger of missing the Grand Canyon because they're too busy playing NFS or watching Hannah Montana. Press release below the jump: More »

Nissan Forum Concept to Debut in Detroit

We sauntered over to the Las Vegas Hilton pavilion last night for a no-photos event. It was Nissan, showing off its latest design concept, the Forum, which uses trippy, organic shapes to unhook some minivan clichés from our forebrain. It's the Forum concept, a vannish prototype that's ostensibly a forebear of the next Quest. Despite the curvilinearity of the front, the Forum sports a chopped, right angle at the rear, which gives it a familial connection with the Japan-only Cube, which we hear will also find its way to the US in some form. The Forum also has a cryptic button on the steering wheel that reads "Mommy Pause." Perhaps the driving equivalent of a bath in Calgon bubbles? More »

Gotcha, Eh? Canadian Forum Nabs Hit-And-Run Slimeball

Here's what happened, two Canadian skells (above, identity hidden) in an Acura RSX cracked into a Mercedes and ran for the hills. A third party sporting a DSLR with a mondo lens nabbed them redfaced and sheepish as they made for cooler climes. From there the story gets a bit convoluted, but suffice to say the jackasses are probably being apprehended and plan-b'd at the Crown station. Don't screw with technology, you Canuckleheads. More »
