"Reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil" includes drilling here. if you are agasint drilling here, clearly you are for outsourcing that money to people who don't like us.
@ghelary: It’s a vestige of World War II, the island is claimed by both Russia and Japan, but has been controlled by Russia since the end of the war. There has been a dispute between the two countries over the control of the island since that time.
Ugh, people have been clanging the "our oil is running out!!" alarm since the Edwardian era. Like these fancy graphics, they never account for new claims discovered, presently worked sites turning out to be larger than we knew, or old sites filling back in.
As for consumption, what this chart neglects to mention is that our economy, even when it's down, produces orders of magnitude more than almost any other nation on Earth... which makes us the financial locomotive most of these other countries are almost entirely dependent on either economically or militarily.
@Deartháir II: The Return: How did my photo get on there? They told me only the toughest bare back riders wear pink ... I guess I misunderstood what they meant ....
@amorak: I'm not from Edmonton, it's just the closest major centre that people might have heard of. But as far as I'm concerned, all of Alberta is pretty much the armpit of Alberta. Calgary is just the armpittiest.
Wow. Bush really was misguided. He should have had the CIA fabricate evidence that Canada was behind 9/11, had WMD hidden in snowdrifts, and was massing Mounties at the Minnesota border. We'd be in much better shape today, and could actually reduce the oil imports, as we'd own North America from the Red River up!
@abgwin: actually, that's why it's absurd to say that we invaded for oil. China is the major user of Iraqi oil. Not that it was right to invade for any of the other stated reasons, but it wasn't about oil, directly.
Interesting factoid about Canadian oil: the US gov't sold a private company a nuclear bomb because some genius figured that since the Russians were attempting to get oil with nukes, it should be done in Canada's oil sands, too. They built an airstrip and dug a giant hole in the earth but thankfully someone came to their senses before the bomb was detonated.
Interesting that you are calling this stuff that comes out of Canada Canadian "Oil" as it is really oily rock that is really difficult to get usable oil out of. Here is an video explaining the process: [www.wttw.com]
I found it interesting how much this looks like coal mining and REALLY want to drive around in a 3 story tall, 400 ton capacity dump truck.
@dopplerd: Oily sand, largely. And by the time you guys get it, it's oil.
Also, that's only the most famous stuff. Around here, it's traditional oil from traditional wells, drilled and pumped just like anywhere else in the world.
@40Valve: That reminds me. Years ago in my early teenaged years, my dad was the acting manager for a huge open pit mine. I frequently went up to the mine with him when I was on summer vacation, and as I wasn't obnoxious, a lot of the guys working there got used to me. One offered to let me drive a huge beast of a front-end loader. I can't try and guess the size through the haze of memory, but let's just say, "fucking huge".
The only thing that struck me was the fact that when I climbed into the cab, it had an airbag on the steering wheel. I remember thinking that by the time something significant enough happened that you needed an airbag in a vehicle this size, it was probably too late to need an airbag anyhow.
@wojo to Ford-Awesome SHO, Great Job!: : The intro movie to the game Fallout is alarmingly on the mark...(crisis strikes, Canada's annexed) then, it doesn't help that Canada loves to cut military funding and use antique equipment that's falling apart. We'd be in a lot of trouble if our guys didn't train so hard!

Thank you first of all for Col. Edwin Drake and his "Folly". Thank you for providing diligent folks like this, whose perseverance has blessed many. Please bless petroleum and all of its many by-products that fuel the world. I thank you for the bounty of petroleum that you’ve already provided, that has improved my families and many others in ways seen and unseen. I pray that you will give petroleum engineers the knowledge to extract more energy from the ground and chemist the ability to extract more products more efficiently from a barrel of oil. I pray that every time a drilling rigs bit hits the ground, crude oil will spring forth, and spray into the sky with rapturous glory. I pray that there would be enough oil to fuel high powered cars I love, all the way to the lowly tractor, putt putting along in the third world, to feed the worlds hungry. I pray that petroleum prices would stay low, which will restrain murderous thugs and dictators, but at the same time improve the quality of life for the poor and rich alike.
I thank you for the plastic that is derived from petroleum that has helped make products safer, electrically safe and ergonomic. I thank you for not requiring my family and others to have to use dangerous, dirty, unpredictable and very costly horses and mules for transportation. I thank you for the ease and convenience automobiles have brought into our lives. I thank you for planes, trains, cargo ships and semi trucks that can quickly bring fresh goods to the market place, from far away lands, so that wonderful fruit and vegetables can be enjoyed year around, that without petroleum, would be near impossible.
If global warming is true, then I thank you for the warm weather which will make life more comfortable, and the increased crop production. If global cooling is true, then I thank you for the cool weather, because my children love the snow, and thank you for the warm house you have provided to my family and many others.
I ask that you allow the scales to fall from the eyes of the critics of petroleum and let them see the true light that it has brought to a darkened world. Help them to see the truth of how the world would be, with out this resource to fuel it. Let them see the manure, flies, and dead horses laying in the streets and the disease that come with out it. Let them see that gasoline and diesel is the highest-energy-density fuel and that there is simply no comparable source of practical, portable energy. Let them see how difficult travel near and far would be without this wonderful commodity. Let them have compassion on the poor of the world, whose lives would be far worse and treacherous without your precious gift of petroleum.
Thank you for hearing my prayer Oh LORD,
Amen and Amen.
Oh and please give me a nice Riviera from the sixties,
@Flathead Smith Prefers the Days of Danger: Amen to you, sir. I will pray to the petroleum god for a Rivi for you. You deserve a nice 65 with a 425 Nailhead and clamshell lights.
We CAN reduce our oil consumption; we've done it before!
From a report by Rocky Mountain Institute:
"Saving oil isn’t just theoretical. From 1977 to 1985 real
U.S. GNP grew 21 percent, the number of registered
vehicles grew 20 percent, but total oil use fell 15 percent.
The oil saving in 1985 equaled three times our 1986
imports from the Persian Gulf."
@Deartháir II: umm, but his beginning statement was: " We CAN reduce our oil consumption; we've done it before!"... so... we start mass producing 2 cylinder vehicles? is that what he is saying?
@Deartháir II: the only reason americans tolerated low power fuel efficient vehicles was because of the relatively high fuel prices. the masses will not stop purchasing trucks, suv's, high power sports cars, etc as long as they believe they are paying a "fair" or "acceptable" rate for fuel.

@Timtoolman, still looking for work.: This is where almost all the oil you get from Canada comes from, notice it's proximity to Alaska.
Also it's not underneith the ground so much as mixed in with it, hence the name Oil Sands.
