As near as I can figure, they need to cut this thing in half and make a turbodiesel V4 for their new sedans and such. 6.7 liters is too big for anything except medium duty industrial applications.

@DoctorNine: I've been shouting "V4!" for the last several years - the form factor is tough to beat for nice, tidy packaging, if you've got the width to fit it between the wheels.

I don't know about the NVH dynamics, though. My experience with the ol' Taunus V4 in the SAAB was that it had kind of a throb like a Subaru, but was otherwise a perfectly tractable engine.

@Neener: There are a few reasons for that:

There's been regulatory changes over the last few years which mean a new engine architecture will be easier to meet those changes rather than trying to force the old engines to meet the regs.

Ford isn't getting their diesels from Navistar anymore, so there is necessarily new engines.

I'm sure there are a few more reasons, but that's what came off the top of my head.

@nitroram33 misses PolaЯ: This is totally true, however something as bad ass and powerful like the 7.3 could never work in todays eco-conscious world. My uncle has a c.1988 F-350 Custom (regular cab/chassis boy). Its unstoppable, and I use it during the summer for commercial fishing related work. The down fall is atrocious fuel economy. So bad, the owner put on a 123 gallon tank on the rear because fill ups were so frequent.

I swear, every time that beast fires up three Polar Bears are murdered and Al Gore sheds a tear. Which is why I love it so damn much.

@Ash78: New York City IS NOT the best place on earth. Most Overrated city, EVER.

LA is nice, but we don't traipse about saying we're the best city ever and we certainly don't think it.

Everything about New York City offends me with its sense of self importance.

I for one, think Chicago is better. It's landlocked and still manages to not suck without claiming it's THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST. Sure, there's a lot of History, but I ... ugh.

I just can't stand New York City. NY State as a whole, I'm told, is actually OK... just NYC dwellers in specific have this sense of "I'm a NEW YORKER, I'm more American and more civilized and far more important than you are." I hate to stereotype, but every NYC dweller I've ever met is loud, boisterous, has that god awful nasal psuedo-italian-jewish accent and in general is an asshole. They're like real life trolls.

And I'm all... "yeah, well then go back and keep your attitude out of my face. Keep your uptight selfimportant attitude out of my 'somewhat relaxed' LA."

The other reason why I hate NYC is because it is the least car-friendly city in the US.

You can still drive around in Chicago. In New York, eh, fuhghettaboutit.

@Pleco - e pluribus hoonum: I like New York as a city, but I don't like cities so much. Living less than five miles out of NYC in Central Jersey, I unfortunately have to commute out to Long Island for school. I experience the roads on a weekly basis as I pass through it. Then there's my friend from NYC, who thinks that just because I live in New Jersey, I live in the 'country'. Urban provincials!

    @zsvdkhnorc: Further proving my point.

I live in the happy land of Urban Sprawl. Thank god for that.

New Yorkers consider themselves superior to anyone living in Jersey.

My 85-ish year old grandmother (I forget how old she is) is STILL a New Yorker, despite having lived in California since the 1940's and not having been back to NYC since. She STILL has the accent and sensibilities, and still talks about working at Macy's and riding the subway all day for a dime. I once asked her if she made fun of the kids from Jersey and without missing a beat, she said "Of course we did" and then continued to talk over me and not listen as all New Yorkers I've ever met do.

@Kelster: According to Wikipedia, that isn't true. I can find no other reliable reference to back it up either way, but I have been told that OHC engines were invented in 1911 and pushrod in 1916, but according to wiki the OHV engine was developed by David Dunbar Buick in 1902. They do not specify that this was a pushrod engine, per se, but that they do state that OHC was a later development, and I can't imagine what would actuate the valves in a non-OHC OHV engine.
