Here in Tampa, they use Dakotas, Rams and a plethora of other unmarked Chargers.

They're using them up here in Washington too, Silver F150 with a canopy. Seems like it mostly targets the big rigs and works as a spotter for marked patrol cars.

They've also really stepped up the speed trapping and use of unmarked chargers.

I'd hate to have to get cuffed and stuffed in the county mountie truck. Every little bump, those bedliner ridges just dig into your ass. And if the cop is picking up firewood and stuff while he's running his beat, the turns have a high bruise factor.

City of Falls Church cops used to drive marked Volvos, and not the top of the range either.

i dunno what the ramifications of that are, but i would NEVER pull over to an undercover cop. i'd keep going until a MARKED police cruiser joins the chase, THEN i'll pull over.

you can never be sure, i know this is the US, but i've had/heard bad experiences back home.

@c0de: To clarify USA laws, it is illegal for anyone but official cars to have flashing lights. So, you must stop for them. What is allowed for safety (as obviously crooks can illegally place flashing lights on their cars) is not to cooperate any further after the stop after informing whoever approaches you that you want marked car / officer present.

Punishment for not stopping will likely depend on locality but where I live you'll definitely be arrested.

That said, if in NYC area, beware of yellow cab undercover police cars... Personally saw it many times on Belt Pkwy, Staten Isl. Expwy. and rt440. Likely present on other NYC roads.

@Laxfalcon246: I seem to recall when that first came out. I thought it was hilarious. Segway had already come out with their toys, with complex geostabilizers and whozits and whatchamacallits to keep it stable on two parallel wheels.

Then that came out, and they accomplished the same thing by -- amazing stuff this -- putting on a third wheel! Brilliant!

Reminds me of that old legend of the first time astronauts and cosmonauts met up in space. Legend has it that one of the astronauts, trying to show off the technical prowess of the US, pulled out a pen to show to the Russians. "See this pen? It cost two million dollars to develop, but it was designed to work anywhere. We've solved the problem of ink-flow in zero-G, and it can write upside down, sideways, in a vaccuum, anywhere. It was expensive, but worth every penny." The Russian looks unimpressed, fishes in his pocket, and pulls out a pencil. "Ve spend two rubles."

@boosted-lego-wagon: There are a weird assortment of police vehicles up here. I believe it's due to the practice of using many of the nicer vehicles that are seized in drug raids as unmarked cruisers. (In Canada, they're called "ghost cars"... boosted, you'd know that, eh? Ya hoser. Is that not the case in the 'States?)

So I've seen quite a variety around here. There's an Escalade, an older STS, a Caravan, a lifted F350 dually, a Grand Cherokee, a Sequoia and some Infiniti that I didn't get a good look at.

And, of course, the usual Mustangs and Impalae.

At a local drag meet, the cops actually brought along their Mini Cooper too, although that's fully marked.

A little off-topic, but I saw a volunteer firefighter in a Sunfire yesterday, and the combination of the flashing light and J-body threw me off.

Also, I know the city of Windsor had an undercover F-150 or two, I think they also had a Crown Vic dressed up like a Marauder.
