I was permanently scarred by "Fargo" so I see a plot. He didn't really commit suicide, it was a hit. Or the story of his failed attempt to fake-abduct his wife--because he couldn't get that tan Cierra the hitman wanted--is about to come out. Or the head office wanted those VIN numbers right away. #carpocalypsenow
As someone that has contemplated it about 340 of the last 365 days, allow me to speculate wildly.
Wife is hot, guy is a dork. Good chance wife's family has the money. Regardless a divorce won't be good for business so they keep it together for show. She spends her nights on the prowl for younger guys while he sleeps on the couch in the dealership because that's all he has left. But she finally found somebody she wants to settle down with and now he'll lose that too.
@Silvrt01: I've been Bill, twice. I'm so burned out if there's ever another relationship it will have a time limit and be a straight cash transaction. #carpocalypsenow
@Ralph Wiley Is Poised: I did qualify that I was speculating wildly. Maybe he could no longer live with hiding that he was gay and got infected by some tranny hooker in Tijuana. You know you've seen too much drama when you start making up back stories. #carpocalypsenow
@skaycog: I had a friend who blew his brains out this summer. He was very well liked and respected, and his problems didn't seem any more severe than the average person's.
Some people can't see themselves they way other see them.
@skaycog: It's not so much the situations (speaking for myself) as it is the internal dialog. Everybody has that little voice that says you fucked up but most get over it. Some of us have little voices that won't stop telling us, in mind numbing detail, exactly how much we fucked up. It becomes an endless experience of humiliation. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. #carpocalypsenow
@mytdawg: Ex-wife's uncle committed suicide due to cronic depression/mental health issues. I wouldn't wish it on any family.
No matter how bad sh*t got during my divorce, I always knew that if the homeless alcoholic guy drinking a quart bottle in the park could be happy, then my issues were solvable and they too would pass... #carpocalypsenow
@mytdawg: You said "but most get over it". I think that says it all, irregardless of what happened. I "got over" several things that might have been the undoing of somebody else in my shoes. Life is worth living! #carpocalypsenow
@bzr: Does anyone remember the South Park episode where they kept saying "the Simpsons have already done that". I feel in the automotive world this applies to Top Gear. And as the video shows, "Top Gear has already done this." #needforspeed
That European Ranger is really what we need. Its possibly the only worthy fate of our Ranger. It would be worlds better then the fat ass Colorados and Dakota's we have now. #fordka
Although it would be nice to have a new Ranger, it would have to be built in North America rather than imported from overseas. It would seemingly be easy to bring the world-Ranger from one of Ford's numerous foreign plants, but there's still that nasty little 25% "chicken tax" tariff on imported pickups to deal with. If Congress can be persuaded to drop the 46-year-old punitive measure for foreign tariffs on US chickens, then maybe we can get somewhere with new Rangers. However, given the "effectiveness" of Congress recently, I wouldn't get my hopes up.
I hate the Ka; so I'm not really broken up about not getting that, and truly, why would anyone buy it over the Fiesta?
The Ranger, I think, can be explained by the continued weakness in the full size market. How are you going to make any profit on Rangers when a decent F150 can be had for $17K? As much as folks on this site would praise smaller, lighter trucks, I'm guessing that the average American buyer sees them as inferior. #fordka
@snapoversteer 'bout to get told: Could be, but I've written about the disappearance of true minipickups on other blogs and seen spontaneous outpourings of nostalgia and claimed desire to own new ones. Somebody is going to bring back the old 2 liter engine and a porch type minipickup, and they're going to reap the rewards that Detroit refuses to. As usual. #fordka
The 'Ka' could potentially compete with the Fiesta. Why would a college graduate with their English degree spend their hard-earned Applebee's paycheck on the more expensive Fiesta when there's a Ka available? And what's the incentive for Ford to bring it over here? To fight the microcars from ... who? Smart? Better to focus on making the Fiesta as economical, efficient and populars as possible. That's where the real competition is.
As for the Ranger, what's the incentive for Ford to go to the trouble of marketing and launching the all new platform? Changeovers aren't free, after all. And, as several of you have already noted, the competition in this segment is pretty dreadful. Those who fixate on reliability are going to buy the Toyota. Those who want to buy the cheapest will go with one of the lesser Japanese brands. And those whose grandpappy used to work for GM will buy the Chevy. The rest who really want a vehicle in this segment - the ones who were probably going to buy the Ranger in the first place - are still going to buy the Ranger. The number of people who would 'switch' to a Ranger if they brought over the new version is probably insignificant relative to the cost of changing over all the production, marketing and showroom stuff.
But what do I know... I only leased my Ranger back in 1999 because I wanted to get out from under the payment on my '98 Trans Am that had given up two fuel pumps and a windshield wiper motor in its first year of existence... #fordka

Is all this "the Ranger is too old..." whining coming from the same folks who keep saying Honda should bring back the old CRX and "today's cars are too fat and heavy, please bring back dependable, simple vehicles"? #fordka
@beercheck: +1. Just give it a couple modern engine choices, maybe the ecoboost and the sweet Duratorq diesel, and it'll be good for another 10 years. #fordka
