It's the same logic applied to Jetta Diesel pricing. The base Jetta starts around $17k, but the diesels are all around $25k on dealer lots. But comparing equipment, the $25k diesel has similar equipment to the $23k gas model.

For the extra $8,000, what's to stop me buying the stripper base Fusion and a good used Geo Metro that I can refurb to crackling hot thrifty awesomeness and still have money left? Or for that matter, just spend the $8,000 on the Metro and rent a Fusion for trips?

Not buying an upcharge that high. It sounds extreme.

This is Ford's mistake: Pricing the hybrid higher than the Camry hybrid. I know, I know that it gets better mileage, but most consumers won't take the time to understand this. They'll see that a Ford is priced higher than a Toyota and that'll be their decision.

@Miscellanea: I think hybrid buyers look at mileage statistics more than price. Otherwise, why would they pay the extra price? The Prius, for example, is more expensive than a similarly equipped Corolla while being around the same size. Why would they pay more when the Corolla already breaks the 30 mpg barrier? It's all about mileage for those car buyers.

@cabjf: I though it was about image and perception. Ask someone which car company has the best fleet mpg? I bet they'll say Toyota. They'd be wrong.

Here is what I would consider:

Toyota will last longer than the ford, and have far fewer problems. The toyota starts cheaper than the ford. The ford will get better gas mileage, but that will be a wash with the visits to the dealer to fix issues. Therefore the Toyota is the smart decision.

Why do most hybrids have that ugly "hybrid look",the front looks good,but the side & rear profile look dated. Why didn't they use the current Mondeo to base a hybrid on.

@layabout: I've been asking why the Fusion even exists when we have the Mondeo just 4k miles away. I think the short answer is this:

1. Mazda was already working on the 6 on this continent, so Ford just made one for themselves.
2. Mexican factory = cheap labor and transport costs
3. Ford royally screwed up the last Mondeo launch stateside (Contour/Mystique).

I'm sorry, I only consider cars that screech to a halt around an animated representation of an APR-cum-hero.

Seems like quite an upcharge for the Hybrid over the gasser, but I'm guessing the hybrid will be more comparable in equipment to the mid-range gassers?

@The Name's Ash78, Housewares: I've noticed that they take their luxury or just below luxury model and add the hybrid system. That way they can hide the extra price for the hybrid in all those other options. Although some are more costly than others. I seem to recall a recent Consumer Reports article where they compared hybrid to comparable non-hybrid models. Many paid for themselves in gas savings after only a year or two. Some of them (like the Highlander) would take 8 or more years to break even money-wise.

@cabjf: The "Hybrid payback period" (or Diesel) always seems a helluva lot more complicated when you're forced to compare the hybrid's base features again some other high-end gas model.

When I look at this and say "I want a basic car", I see the sub-$20k and an $8k premium for the hybrid. That buys a LOT of gas.

So it may be good business, but I really wish companies create a couple of hybrid trimlines for easier comparison. Beyond that, if you've got minimalist or environmentalist consumers out there who are hybrid-leaning, I'd say it stands to reason that a lot of them don't want dead cow on the seats.
