    That's not a Honda Fit -- it looks more like a Merc A-Class. The windshield angle, flat tailgate, and hazard flasher activation with the airbags say that it's not a Fit/Jazz...

    If I've ever got nothing left to lose, I'm taking on the CHP in a trophy truck.

    700hp to get away feet of suspension travel for clearing curbs or ditches or whatever and a 100 gallon fuel cell to keep it going long after the helicopter runs out of fuel.

    I'm pretty sure that an integral part of the PIT maneuver is that other cars are RIGHT THERE to block the car from going anywhere afterwards.

    Fit is go go go go go go STOP!

    LA cops always seem to love doing the PIT, yet on TV they're always marginally successful with it. At least this highway appeared to be pretty empty.

    Having been in the middle of several of these chases in my comparatively few years on this earth, it always amuses me that the people you see getting chased by the cops all drive the slowest possible cars, be it an econobox or an SUV/truck.

    Not that it really matters, as there is no car in the world that can outrun the old motorola, but at the same time, can't these punks at least have some creativity and panache, and do this sort of thing on motorcycles or in small, slinky sports cars? Preferably with their hair on fire?

    @pauljones: The motorcycle chases I've seen almost universally end in death or dismemberment.

    @pauljones: One of our larger area suburbs (with 80k+ people) now has ONLY Tahoes on the force. I've mentioned before that I think a police force should have cars that give the perp NO question that he's going to be caught, not vehicles that scream "you can probably outmaneuver me."

    @pauljones: I'd personally love to see the Rozzers try (and fail) to keep up with a veteran test driver in an SLR 722, or even better, a Zonda Cinque!

    @pauljones: Good observation - if you're going to get into one of these chases, at least get a car that's actually able to give you a chance of getting away.

    Even when these people do get a decent car, they typically crash or do something else incredibly stupid.

    @pauljones: If you are dealing with a fast sports car or motorcycle, it's a better idea to use an airplane or helicopter to follow the vehicle/bike until it stops.

    High speed chases are dangerous for the suspect, police officers and the public in general for numerous reasons.

    @pauljones: Since most supercars spontaneously burst into flames anyway, high-speed chases seem to be a good way to get thrill for your dollar beyond just watching it burn as you walk out of a Starbucks, squeezing the cup to the extent the scalding liquid escapes and drips through your fingers, and being the unwitting subject of cameraphone-armed passersby.
