I guess sinkholes aren't always destructive. Some of these are really awesome. Note: This video doesn't necessarily reflect the views of the staff or me. But then, maybe it does.
This sinkhole was a result of a 6" pipe burst. On Sunday a 64" main burst about 2 miles from this one, though no fire trucks were swallowed. The 64" pipe/main was from 1919. We need some infrastructure upgrades I think.
The reporters in this clip remind me of Harrison Bergeron "At least they tried."
In a way, so does that picture of the fire truck. I'm just glad nobody was hurt.

Just drop that sucker into reverse and power out of it.
Wusses.
tip: don't drive through water under which you cannot see pavement...I don't want to hear, "but it's muddy..." Hey, Cali infrastructre, specifically roads, bite. Learn to work with it.
Also, use the pumper on it to drain the hole...water-logged problem partially solved.
@I said, aw, yeah...: I rode around on logging roads growing up and was reminded constantly not to drive through large puddles of water. Might be a poor road grade pooling a few inches of water, or it might be a backed up culvert hiding a 10 foot deep blown out roadway.

A somewhat similar, but less tragic thing happened here in Atlanta a couple of months ago. A garbage truck lost control, rolled down a hill and crushed some guys car in the parking lot below. That time the car was nothing of importance it was an Accord, Saturn, or some other appliance type of car.

Passenger: Oh, I wouldn't do that. Buy a boat instead. You can get more use out of it.
Driver: You think? I don't know. I don't go to the lake that much.
Passenger: Yes, but you'll be able to use it here in the city.
Driver: Really? Like where?
Passenger: There!
Driver: *glub* *glub* *glub* *glub*
