I just clicked on one of the ads by Google above for the GT-R and I just voided the warranty on a car as it was coming down the production line.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the GT1 class a bit quicker than what a GT-R is capable of? I believe we are talking about cars like the old 911 GT1 and Merc CLK-GTR and Maserati MC12. Those cars are in a completely different league.

@Pessimippopotamus is at 0% productivity: That was too short of an answer. GT class racing, although the cars look similar to their counterparts, still go under extensive changes to become a race car. GT1 being the most extreme, GT4 being the least extreme. The standards are the same for all cars, so there isn't a reason why GT-R wouldn't be competitive compared to others with similar weight and power.

As for the 911 GT1 (which wasn't a 911 at all) and the CLK-GTR/CLR, they were built using a completely different standard at the time. So it's the same kind of class, but class regulation was different then.

Maserati MC12 is the same class, but it was a purpose built racer with the road car purely existing to make the race car legal, so other constructors hated it. That's why it was declared illegal in ACO, but FIA allowed it, albeit with drastic modifications.

In any case, with GM and Aston Martin (which are the most successful) pulling out of GT1, the GT-R really makes no impact.

I should also point out that GT1 class in ACO and FIA are slightly different. 911 GT1 and CLK-GTR were under ACO, and therefore in Le Mans races. Maserati MC12 is FIA only, and was never allowed to participate in Le Mans.

The GT-R GT1 is also for FIA. Don't expect it to show up at Le Mans anytime soon. Or anytime at all.

    God, I love endurance racing.

Here. If you're ever bored, read this.

Wonder if Nissan could give us a similar powertrain in the street GTR? Technology be damned, a high revving v-8 with a 6 speed in potent chassis sounds appealing to me.

Also, is the engine in the GT1 car remotely similar to any other engine Nissan makes such as what can be found in the truck/suv segment?

With the international GT1 class almost certainly about to go the way of the dodo, I'm surprised Nissan bothered building a car to this rule package.

@Upgrade to Tomsk Diamond today!: Technically, Nissan would have to build homologation specials. 3 road cars per 1 race car, but the V8 RWD configuration already exists in the JGTC GT500 series, which is also governed by FIA... So I don't know how the translation would work.

    @Upgrade to Tomsk Diamond today!:

Actually, if you want PR and bragging rights without having to work terribly hard at it, it makes perfect sense. Why else would Acura jump to P1 when Audisport won't commit to a full season of the ALMS?

And for those eager to hate on Nissan and the GT-R, Corvette ran GT1 for several years with little to no competition in that class. I don't see any of you crying over it.

     Reply
F_munk was starred F_munk was unstarred

    04/07/09

@F_munk: But there was Aston Martin there to keep it company. In fact it stole the GT1 win from the Corvettes last year and the year before. Keep in mind that I'm talking about the factory teams that run in the ACO GT1 class, which is LMS, ALMS, and Le Mans. Now both GM and Aston Martin are no longer in GT1.

Now we're talking about FIA GT1, which is a different animal. There's always been lots of GT1 cars. Saleen S7R, Maserati MC12, Corvette C6R, Ferrari 550 etc... Now there's a Ford GT1 in the mix.

Of course, all that will change when FIA's exotic car ban comes to effect in 2010. Stupid FIA.

In any case, this is Nissan's equivalent to the Big Three's NASCAR campaign and Toyota's F1 team. No real connection to any of its products, but still wishing (really hard) for the halo effect.
