Oh, come on now! I can't believe that this is even a matter for debate. The sweet sound of a Ferrari V-12 is the sweetest most sound to this Jalopnik's ears. There is nothing that is American that even comes close.

@unclemonkey: I agree and disagree with you here. Call me an American but there is something about a big V8 at full strum. And I LOVE the sound of a high-rev Ferrari engine, don't get me wrong. But both are evocative in their own ways.

In a way you can't even compare them. It's almost like the cliche apples to oranges comparison.

I think you've identified something here, Peter. A recent Car Talk episode featured a call from Leonard Bernstein's son talking about his Dad's love of cars, although I believe his favorite was a Maserati...

Nice bit of journalism there, Pete. Von Karajan owned Ferraris and also wrote symphonies, therefore the analogy lies at his doorstep. Go ahead and write rubbish, but at least make it interesting.

And what sort of eurotwit goes and changes the color of Steve McQueen's Lusso?

Dude Peter, aren't you in America? Why aren't you writing an article titled: On The Origin of Comparing the Noise of American V8s with I don't know...a pig iron symphony?

@fabriciom: Engine and transmission assembly is a stressed member. Body panels probably bolt together in only a few spots.

This is the kind of construction that can lead to winning LeMans, when you come in with a blown transmission, and are back out in under five minutes with a new rear assembly.

You know, looking at these pictures, that looks like really drastic surgery, but I guess when the engine is a stressed part of the chassis, that's what happens during routine maintenance.
