Dear god I hope the tear down was for the oil leak. Because if you have to cut the car in half to change a clutch. That's is just insane...

@fabriciom: Engine and transmission assembly is a stressed member. Body panels probably bolt together in only a few spots.

This is the kind of construction that can lead to winning LeMans, when you come in with a blown transmission, and are back out in under five minutes with a new rear assembly.

Well, there's your problem, right there. Yer little ferrin' can done busted in two! I think Jimmy-Bob has an old Ford truck frame out back. Coupla hours and we can get this sumbitch welded up right fer ya, an it'll be good to go.

You know, looking at these pictures, that looks like really drastic surgery, but I guess when the engine is a stressed part of the chassis, that's what happens during routine maintenance.

Awesome, and kind of creepy, in an A.I. sort of way.

I am astonished that Ferrari, today, does not have a mid-engine V12 in their stable. As amazing and capable as the 599 is, it lacks the visceral punch of the 512BB or the over the top excess of the 512TR and Enzo. I hope that the Prancing Horse once again adorns a proper V12 Supercar, with the engine singing right behind your head.

@graverobber: Jay Wert Hacked my Sig!: Exactly. There's something just a little more special about an engine behind you. It's like the bad influence pushing you into stuff you're not sure you're ready for, be it climbing El Cap or having too much beer after liquor. Front engines, even with RWD, are still a little bit more like someone trying to pull you into something, like a friend telling you to change your 401(k) from Capital Preservation to Growth & Income.

The coaxing is still there, but the scope is different.

@Ash78: My FiL used to have this Pantera. I liked to take it out because it was a pretty fun ride. I'd get it up on the freeway and put the spurs to it. It would take off, literally, like a rocket. The sound from the engine, immediately next to your right elbow sounded like Hoover Dam exploding, and the nose would get uber light and dance all over the place. It was a hoot.

There was nothing subtle about that car, and even though rough and raw, there was still something exotic about it. You could pull out the fiberglass trunk and that engine and ZF gearbox would lay in the back of the car for all the world to see like a Playboy centerfold on display.

Wish he hadn't sold that one. . .
