    The real question is: can they trust YOU?


    Anyway, I think cars are much cooler when you own them: you can only rightfully show off what you've earned. Sure buying is a lot more expensive: depreciation, insurance, tax etc. but the whole idea of owning a supercar is to show off that you can afford it all!

    @Dhillaz: Sometimes it's not about showing off. I'd be willing to bet with most Jalops that it's all about the experience. Everyone deserves to experience an exotic car at least once in their lifetime, even if they can't afford to own one.

    I stayed at a friend's timeshare in Vegas back in May and used the money I saved to rent a Saleen Mustang convertible for a day trip to the Hoover Dam. Got it from Rent-A-Vette, which was a nice little outfit with decent prices. Definitely made the day much more memorable and a lot more fun.

    I'm such a puss. I went to Vegas once a few years back and spent about $300 in the casinos, took about $200 back home. And that was over 3 days (but I was really sick one). More than anything else, I wish I had used that money to rent a new (then '97-'98) Vette and taken it out in the desert and run it.


    Far better use of money than what I did with it. But by the time I figured it out it was too late.

    Anybody notice Ray disappeared once you started discussing prom--I mean, reunion?

    Whatever he drove, by now it would be anticlimactic to find out the truth. If it were a Bugatti, we would have known.

    Personally, I'm hoping it was a 69 Chevelle in metallic blue, with mags and big/littles, but that's just me.

    @Pete Gaines: Plus, as someone else pointed out, that could just be him driving it around and not to the reunion. I've pretty much just given up hope on this question being definitively answered at this point. I guess it will be a mystery or a meme now.

    Very informative post, thanks. The last trip I took to visit my sister and brother-in-law I considered renting an exotic, but it never got past the Googling "exotic car rental" stage. Looks like a good thing I didn't get any further without having a little more info.

    @Schm, lord of Torques!: I heard he called in every favour he had, and borrowed an original 427 Shelby Cobra. Unfortunately, without the Nav system he's become accustomed to in every new car nowadays, he got hopelessly lost, and ended up in the pouring rain on a back-country side-road, out of gas, with no roof to cover the car or himself.


    Still, he looked nice in the suit.

    I think it'd be great to get one of these rentals for a getaway car at my wedding. Other than that though, I'll put my money toward full ownership, thanks. Unless...do you think I could get away with taking rentals out for track days?

    @Alan Olson: Just get something cheauffered for the wedding, you will be nervous and have other things on your mind. I got my folks to spring for a 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Towncar for a couple of hours. Made for some great pics.


    I was really tempted the last time I rented from Budget in Seattle to get a MINI Cooper S instead of the POS Caliber that got, but I didn't think I could fit luggage for two for a week in it.

    @damnelantra™: If you go back and read the comments in the post referenced above, someone asked Ray about seeing the Jeep that night and Ray said it was the one he was driving. While he never did come out and say it, it infers that he drove the Jeep.
