Subaru Exiga Spotted Wearing Skin Tight Duds

We're a little less than a month from the 'official' unveiling of the 2009 Subaru Exiga, but seeing the STI-looking one this morning and this scantily clad one now, we're betting the embargo dam breaks before June 17th. It's going to be like a game of whack-a-mole pretty soon here, trying to keep up with all the seven passenger crossover news. And by the way, when did seven passengers become the new five? When everyone has a seven-seater, will there be a nine-seater arms race? [WorldCarFans]

Subaru Exiga Teaser Makes Us Want A 7-Seater Crossover... Kinda

Unless we're talking about an AMC Eagle or a Mega Track, we're not huge fans of crossover vehicles. But there's something about this Subaru Exiga that makes it feel acceptable. As we can see from this teaser, the new 7-seater looks to be significantly better looking than the B9 Tribeca. And while it's hard to tell for sure through this shadowy lighting, it seems that the Exiga will be more on the big wagon than the compromised SUV side of the crossover coin. We just hope the flat boxer engine and AWD will uphold Subaru's reputation for making wagons that can tackle twisty tarmac. Photos below the jump.

2009 Subaru Exiga?!

Remember that shot we saw that was supposedly the next-gen Subaru Forrester? We guess now it may not be. Spy mistress of the automotive masses Brenda Priddy claims she's snagged a working Subaru Exiga on her (or one of her minions) travails across the wilderness. Priddy claims we should see it as a 2009 model. Jeez — we haven't even seen this concept revealed yet — that's happening at the Tokyo Auto Show in just a few weeks — and already there's speculation it'll be built. Still, it's hard to deny the facts — there was an Exiga-looking thing traipsing around out in the open. Full spy report after the jump.

But my handy Stanley Leverlock tape measure doesn't lie!

We've been watching Subaru test a cobbled-up Outback for well over a year now, but we didn't think much of it. We didn't even photograph it until a few weeks ago.

This Outback shell fooled us for quite awhile. The sheetmetal has been chopped, extended, widened and welded! But it was (eventually) obvious that this was no regular Outback!

And although it was "way too large" - one of our sources led us to believe that this was in fact an all-new and much larger Forester.

The current Forester has a 99.4-inch wheelbase. So Stanley and I measured this mule - give-or-take a tenth under the extreme conditions - and came in a tad over a whopping 108-inches! It was within a half of an inch of the Tribeca's wheelbase, and over 3-inches longer than the Outback! (*The Exiga's specs were just released and show a wheelbase of 108.26-inches!!

Track-wise, the Forester has always measured in narrower than the Outback and Tribeca, but it appears Stanley measured this "Outback" wider than the "real" Outback , but not nearly as wide as the Tribeca. Our quick measuring session indicated this mule was about 2 inches wider than the current Outback - showing the Forester - or as the case may be - a running test mule for whatever vehicle will be based on the Exiga Concept - growing in both length and width as compared to the current Forester.

Subaru has been mum on the specifics, but we're expecting this to arrive in production form for the 2009 model year.

We should know more after Tokyo ...

Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Subaru EXIGA Concept Car

Hot on the wheels of the WRX STi reveal last night, the folks at Subaru revealed their diabolical plans to rule the wagon segment at the Tokyo Auto Show later this month. The first non-production vehicle they'll be showing to complete this evil plan is a Touring concept called the EXIGA — a seven-seater combining a spacious interior with "exhilarating driving performance." Well, you know it's got to have "exhilarating driving performance" — because it certainly isn't going to survive on looks alone. Although that's never stopped Subaru before. Exhibition Outline of the 40th Tokyo Motor Show 2007
Tokyo, October 9, 2007 - Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, today announced the major features of its vehicles and technologies, which will be exhibited at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show 2007. Taking "Fantastic moments" as its theme, FHI will showcase Subaru's efforts to integrate the Pleasure of Driving and Environmental Responsibility.

FHI will present a World Debut to its performance flagship, the Impreza WRX STI and also present the Touring 7-seater "EXIGA Concept", which combines a liberating roomy interior space with exhilarating driving performance, and the future electric vehicle "G4e Concept" fitted with next-generation lithium-ion batteries. In addition, FHI will unveil the Impreza BEAMS Edition developed in collaboration with BEAMS, famous fashion retailer. Besides showcasing these models, the company will call attention to its unique environmental solutions and advanced safety technologies.

A press briefing is scheduled to be given by President Ikuo Mori on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at 11:50, at the Subaru booth.
