Come to think of it, the Pontiac variants of the A/G platform were the worst. That's saying something, considering the idiotic aeroback Cutlass Salons and Centurys, and the fact that all the cars were so cheap, the rear windows didn't even roll down.

In fact, I also remember reading that Delorean attempted to ramp quality controls on the Vega when it first came out. The Vega had been entirely designed and engineered by GM Corporate and was dumped on Delorean and Chevy at the last minute. Delorean put inspectors on the assembly line and every single one of the first few thousand cars was road tested. Then Corporate pulled the plug...
When the engineers (even flamboyant ones like Delorean) lost control of GM in the '70s and the finance guys like Roger Smith took over, that was it. GM was finished 35 years ago. That's why engineer's should run everything, or at least that's what I keep telling potential employers.

You're probably right about John Z stretching the the division too thin and ultimately hurting it. However, I always thought that the inter-divisional rivalries helped GM at the time. Back when all the divisions had unique styling, engines and engineering, plus the General owned 50%+ of the market, why the hell not? After Malaise, corporate engines and imports, not so much.

Gee, thanks CARB.
"Bonneville is equipped with GM-built engines produced by various divisions. See your dealer for details."
It's sad that this is ending up in an advertisement; it's basically confusing the phasing out of each brand's best V8's as a good thing.
"Pontiac has the wildest thing in Detroit. And it comes with tiger paws."
Ah yes, the Tiger Paw, the tire that firmly established the mediocrity of OEM-selected tires. The tire that established the rule, now passed down from generation to generation, "After you buy a car, start shopping for better tires."
"The 1979 Pontiacs. Our best get better."
Your best? Losers always whine about their best...

I think 18s are a happy medium... They look pretty just about right on both old and new muscle cars, as long as they're some type of AR or cragar-based design; seeing "euro-tuner" or bling-bling rims on classic cars is a huge pet peeve of mine. And by pet peeve I mean wanting to choke someone.
