Actually. I'm not sad. Without the pilot, it's impossible to gauge the worthiness of the show. And since no one's seen it, we might as well be missing nothing.
I have been fed a steady diet of disappointments as various European/British magazines and shows are brought into line with American tastes, so I can only say that the possible death of TGUSA is a very good thing.
As one example, "Intersection" was a very readable car/fashion magazine, until the US edition was launched. This was a heavily "maxim-ed" version of the original, and over no more than six issues, the UK Intersection turned into the same unreadable drivel.
The fear of TGUSA turning TG(proper) into "Motor Trend" makes its' failure the best news I've had since the European Cup finals.
NBC is bullshit, TG UK is THE most popular nonfiction show worldwide ever, and they pass a US version b/c their ford comercial bombed? what a bunch of dumbasses.
If NBC read this blog, they might realise that true enthusiasts want real car shows, not failed attempts at retro/nostalgia bullshit. Knight Rider 2008 is to Knight Rider as the PT cruiser is to the Sedan Delivery, a complete (w)hack job.
I, for one, would like to see Spice channel pick this up. That would be cool.
@Maxichamp: Hey! Wind Tunnel has its moments of greatness. But yeah, ditch pretty much everything else. And get Robin Miller his own goddamn show already!
This could ironically save Top Gear USA. No program on a private TV network could ever criticize a major production vehicle. There's just too much ad money at stake. Put it on a cable channel that doesn't care, get rid of the expensive stuff like Corvette blenders, and make it an opinion show like ESPN's Pardon The Interruption.
give it to discovery channel. that way, you can get 70 reruns a week, and they definitley have the budget for it. i say, if they can afford the mythbusters, they can afford TG.
They've got a history of doing semi-reality type shows really well, and understand that it's as much about letting the hosts be good hosts as whatever they're presenting.
OK Boys and Girls, truth time. NBC smells the cesspool that is network TV, and discovers the odor is emanating from it's own pants. Can the Mayans possibly be correct about 2012?
OH PLEASE let it go to cable...can't risk it becoming another Ford commercial in the hands of NBC.
I do wish they would get rid of the sissy mary latte hybrid crasher though. He's only there for the beefcake factor to try to draw in women (much like James May). Don't pander to us, give us another real car guy.

It's almost as if auto execs were running the show.

Would it be premature to print up some "Save TGUSA!" shirts?

Knight Rider is a car show.
Top Gear is a car show.
Knight Rider was a complete failure (ambitious, but rubbish).
Therefore, Top Gear will also be a complete failure.
You go, guys! Keep on making Christian Slater feel bad about himself!

SpikeTV, maybe...?

Thereby ruining my ability to comfortably watch the show over dinner with my girlfriend.
No thanks, SpikeTV.
