Wait...is the Ford 2.3L the same block as what was in my Fairmont? That's kinda cool if it is. Not a terribly powerful engine, but sure will last awhile.
Also I'm pondering that Tahoe Hybrid drivetrain in something like an old Bel-Air or Nomad...
I don't do well with tests, especially engine ones. My test for you....what kind of engine is this? It is made out of cake. First correct answer gets an imaginary ride in my imaginary car.
@skaycog: It's obviously a 2.5L Chococo engine from Confectionary Motors a new start up in China. It was response to the liquor company that will start to build engines in the near future.
@Mr. M: You are correct, but you are 1 minute behind Ruthless. You need to be a little faster on the image search. ;) But what the heck....we can have a shorter imaginary ride for coming in second.
@skaycog: Total flatlander- LA area resident, so weather doesn't mean much to me (other than when it rains and people here FREAK OUT because it's raining.)
I figured if it was imaginary we'd just time-shift to late summer/mid-spring, or the best driving time in Colorado. :)
@pauljones: An LS is not quite a "Mouse," but it does share the pushrod valvetrain :) My peripheral vision screwed up my ability to guess any of them, as the answers were too easy to read while looking at the pictures :(
@Turboner: True, it is not the original Mouse. But the LS-series engines are evolutions of the Mouse, and hold true to the same small-block, push-rod heritage of the Mouse, which is why GM call them Gen III/IV small blocks.
This seems like it is going to be a great engine. Honda's 2.2 from the S2000 might make more power but it doesn't have as much torque, it requires premium fuel, and you have to keep it in the upper revs for it to make that power. Honda's own 2.4 liter four from the Accord is a much more comparable engine. It has 190 hp at 7000 rpm and 162 lb-ft at 4400 rpm. While the hp are fairly close, the Theta has considerably more torque and it makes all of its hp and torque at a lower rpm. I think this will be a very popular engine for Hyundai and one they will want to work on getting into more of their vehicles.

@alowishus wants to run a Saab Sonett III at LeMons: I'm with you, this think sounds like a hell of an engine. What a nice base option mill-and it'll make those little Forte coupes a lot of fun for next to nothing too.

@IH_kumicho: Oh believe me, I'm quite familiar with the complete lack of low-end torque in Honda fours. In fact, it's one of the many reasons I never want to drive a Civic again.
Nevertheless, it's hard for me to feign excitement about a 200 horse anything, let alone a four-banger Hyundai.

@If FromaBuick6: So you're saying that peak horsepower figure of 200 is the only thing that matters in an engine? This engine will make more torque than the H22 could ever dream of, all while getting better fuel economy.
There's as much pornworthy about a naturally aspirated 2-liter-range four-banger as there's about brown paper bags: Sure you can do kinky things with them (although I know of none), but in general they're just plain boring.
Why is it so damn impossible to find a complete set of technical stats on Hyundai engines? I can't find the complete stats for the Tau, Theta, Theta II, or Lambda engines.
All I really want to know, for the sake of comparison to other engines, is the displacement, output, weight, fuel economy, and physical dimensions.
@pauljones: Click on the engine model you are interested in on the left column. It will take you to a more detailed page that includes dry weight and much more.
@JeepyJayhawk: Just checking. Hoonie and Jalopnik are doing well at playing nice together. Well, except for Ray and his spitballs, but he'll get detention for that whenever the teacher notices. ;)
@Ray Wert: But Ray, I love Jalopnik! If I didn't, why would I read it every day? I always try to add a few really worthwhile comments, often with photos, and always with highly effective use of italics.
Okay, so I posted one questionable comment out of 2,795 (I just checked) — which I have apologized for — how much nicer can I try to be to Jalopnik?
Sam, I haven't been on Jalopnik much lately and sort of missed your joining of the crew. However, this post makes me certain sure I'm going to enjoy you quite a lot. Have a belated welcome aboard!
Enjoyed the post, but I think I was expecting a different definition of "crazy." I think I was expecting the 5 quirkiest (primarily from an engineering standpoint) engines you can buy today. Any chance that's forthcoming?
Also, these are 5 engines who can buy? As I recall, the crazy V-8 they've crammed into the Atom (if you're refering to the one I think you're refering to), the engine alone costs more than the new car I bought over the summer.

Seriously, though, the only one I knew was #3. I know me a Chevy small-block when I see one.
Let's....1 out of 9....that's right about 12% on this test. I think I failed.
