In reply to Hyundai's Theta II 2.4-liter Direct-Injection Four-Cylinder: First Look
This seems like it is going to be a great engine. Honda's 2.2 from the S2000 might make more power but it doesn't have as much torque, it requires premium fuel, and you have to keep it in the upper revs for it to make that power. Honda's own 2.4 liter four from the Accord is a much more comparable engine. It has 190 hp at 7000 rpm and 162 lb-ft at 4400 rpm. While the hp are fairly close, the Theta has considerably more torque and it makes all of its hp and torque at a lower rpm. I think this will be a very popular engine for Hyundai and one they will want to work on getting into more of their vehicles.

@IH_kumicho: Oh believe me, I'm quite familiar with the complete lack of low-end torque in Honda fours. In fact, it's one of the many reasons I never want to drive a Civic again.

Nevertheless, it's hard for me to feign excitement about a 200 horse anything, let alone a four-banger Hyundai.

There's as much pornworthy about a naturally aspirated 2-liter-range four-banger as there's about brown paper bags: Sure you can do kinky things with them (although I know of none), but in general they're just plain boring.

Why is it so damn impossible to find a complete set of technical stats on Hyundai engines? I can't find the complete stats for the Tau, Theta, Theta II, or Lambda engines.

All I really want to know, for the sake of comparison to other engines, is the displacement, output, weight, fuel economy, and physical dimensions.

Enjoyed the post, but I think I was expecting a different definition of "crazy." I think I was expecting the 5 quirkiest (primarily from an engineering standpoint) engines you can buy today. Any chance that's forthcoming?

Also, these are 5 engines who can buy? As I recall, the crazy V-8 they've crammed into the Atom (if you're refering to the one I think you're refering to), the engine alone costs more than the new car I bought over the summer.

Dear Sam... Glenn Danzig is neither a German artist, nor is he even of German descent at all all. He is, in fact, an American of Italian descent. "Danzig" is a stage name.

If you're were looking for a good German headbanging RAWK reference for your Mercedes engineers in Pic #2 to possibly be inspired to greatness by, I would suggest - among other possibilities, of course - the following:
1.) Ulrich Roth... onetime Scorpions Guitarist, who is amongst the most elite on the planet in terms of his technical ability; and as such, can be used to draw perfect comparisons to the best of the best in the engineering & design realms that Mercedes teams regularly achieve, and also constantly aspire to.
2.) Accept... German Heavy Metal band - Lead singer is named Udo Dirkschneider, and you can't get more Teutonic-sounding than that. Plus, they kick ass, as does the engine you cite.
3.) Mekong Delta... nope it doesn't sound German at all, but they're about as German as you can get, being from Berlin, and being formed before the wall fell in said city. Legacy German metal band, as might be appropriate to be cited in conjunction with the legacy of Mercedes engineering.

Personally, I would go with a blend of Roth & Accept... incredible technical ability, blended with pure headbanging, driving force.... pretty much perfectly describes your particular Mercedes engine pick, dunnit?
