Whoa whoa whoa, they don't think they're going to push electric power steering on me, do they? Hold on, tiger!

    Maybe I'm reading it wrong.

Anyway, at least you have to operate the gas and brake pedals. That means whoever's driving is still liable for the damage they do to my car.

@Craig Daitch: Excepting that whole Navigator thing from a few years ago. And the Aviator. Also the LS.

But that Town Car they've been building the same way for 15-ish years? They do have the bugs worked out of that.

When I first learned to drive, the '70 Ford Custom 500 family wagon I drove was inclined to slip from Park into Reverse, effectively "Actively UN-Parking" irself if the parking brake wasn't set.

Your parking assist system might be better than Lexus, but your cars still suck when compared to Lexus.

Here's how you can beat Lexus: Better fit and finish, better powertrain, better materials, and better ergonomics.

@BMRFILE: Don't forget to make the cars uglier and more generic, too. Get rid of that grille, that's brand identification. And what's with this "handling" shit? Handling's overrated, you don't need that.

Ok. So they spend money on this crap, but making a manual for their cars 'is too expensive' to develop. The last Ford product I bought had a manual in it. I will return to buying Ford products when they build a car with what I want in it.

Am I alone when I scream this is stupid as hell? I am sick and tired of all the crap on cars that take away from driving. Auto this, assist that, screens for everything from finding your way to downloading music. Seats that have everything except comfort designed into them. AAAAAARRRGH!

When is the "auto blow job" feature being installed under the steering column?

@lilwillie: If you're buying a Lincoln, you've either got a trunk full of perfectly-good dead hookers, or you haven't been able to get a hard-on since Clinton's first term. I don't see a huge market for the auto-blowjob device.

Oh this is just great. This announcement just following the "We are going broke, bail us out" speech, thats just great Ford. Would this not be like a relative desperately begging you for money today, then tomorrow is talking about his new crazy expensive business strategy? Makes you think they would not be in trouble in the first place if they spent wisely in the first place.

    Stupid and dishonest.

@Sean Godos: Maybe I missed something new while I've been on holidays, but Ford was the one saying, "We're fine thanks, we don't need a bailout, but we want you to DO the bailout, because if these two nitwits fail, so will all our parts suppliers, and then we're fucked." Its whole bailout request was basically hinged on its lack of faith that someone else, let's call them, oh, I don't know, Chrysler, wouldn't be able to survive the next six months.

@Sean Godos: Now I know you're mind-melding with the Intarwebz and all, but crack open this brilliant stone-age device us oldsters call a newspaper. In it you will find that of the American automakers, Ford has not asked for nor received bailout money. They have warned that they may ask for a loan in the future but at this time none appears to be necessary.

And at the beginning of 2008, GM was saying that they would not be saving Ford (when it looked like Ford was headed to the bottom). Maybe they're hoping Ford will save them?

One: The entire lineup? If you can't parallel-park a Focus, you shouldn't have a driver's license. For that matter, if you can't parallel-park whatever you're driving, you shouldn't.

Two: You could actually parallel-park your fucking car if you could see out the back. Almost every new car has a near-horizontal back window and a trunk that's jacked up six inches higher than the hood. Shit needs to stop. Combine that with the already-high beltlines of today's cars (gotta love driving a friggin' bunker) and the number of higher-up trucks, SUVs, and tall wagons (not crossovers, tall wagons) out there... and you can't see a shitting thing behind you.

I'll keep my Volvo 244. Visibility second-to-none, power steering that isn't, and giant plastic bumpers in case your Lincoln fucks the pup when you're trying to get it to park itself.

@FuzzyPlushroom: Further to that: How come I had no problem parallel-parking a U-Haul cube van using only my mirrors, and some people (my ex included) can't parallel park a Ford Festiva? It's not rocket science! If you can figure out how to post a photo from your mobile to fucking Facebook, you can learn to parallel park.

Seriously.. anyone know how to post from a mobile to Facebook? I'm stumped.

@FuzzyPlushroom: A-Fucking-Men! If I could parallel park a 1972 Fleetwood Sixty Special at age 16 (which I had to do to get a license), parking a modern shitbox shouldn't be too much of a challenge for anyone. Even allowing that your complaints about car design in part two are valid, you should still be able to parallel park with nothing but your properly adjusted mirrors.

Ford is going crazy with the technology lately. It started with Sync, then we got the funky gauge cluster in the Fusion Hybrid, and now this. What's next, resuming the nuclear propulsion project of the '60s?

@JonnyO: With the nuclear propulsion you have the option of making a parking space wherever you want it - just melt down the obstructing vehicle into a conveniently flat and smooth surface onto which you can park your overly important self.

@TheDanMan Is drinking beer in the hot sun..: Close, it would have to be called Mr. Fission though (the much more dangerous and radioactive predecessor to Mr. Fusion).

On another note, it's good to see Ford taking improving fuel mileage across its lineup seriously. First it's direct injection, now it's electric motors for power steering; it's clear they have a plan that will help fuel mileage on just about every vehicle they sell without drastically affecting price (unlike some other companies that seem solely focused on expensive hybrid models).

I have to wonder whether the electric motors are as powerful as a hydraulic system. Though that would probably only really affect the heaviest of their vehicles.

@cabjf: Pretty sure Toyota's using electric power steering in all their hybrids, including Highlander/RX, and the light-ass steering all Toyotas seem to have these days is kind of a testament that the electric assist is powerful enough.
