Ok, aside from the blatant BS with photoshopping, anybody else catch this?
"... the competitor in the far lane is overheating the 500-cubic-inch Hemi in his Ford Anglia, an engine he built at the expense of multiple mortgage payments and his wife."
Yup, the guy in the opposite lane is an idiot for spending a couple grand on his 500ci Hemi, while you spent NINETY THOUSAND DOLLARS on a POS monstrosity that has less cargo space than an xB, is the same speed in the 1/4 mile as a Camaro SS, and probably slower around a track than the Evo, and costs more than all of them put together.
Being the "fastest SUV" is like being the smartest person in Special Ed. Great, you beat your peers. Too bad you'll always need the qualifier any time you're talking about performance...
@IH_kumicho: Hey don't be hatin on BMW just for what C&D did. Say what you want about the looks but this car certainly is not a POS. What BMW did in the X6 is pretty amazing, that big heavy SUV can handle like a mid-size car while still retaining some offroading ability (granted I know many SUV's can do much better but none of those would be able to hold their own on a track). And the X6 M may have a similar 1/4 mile as a Camero SS but on a real track (aka something that takes a little more skill than driving in a straight line) I am completely confident that this would out handle it.
I thought that car looked familiar. I've photographed it at a few local shows. The only way the Bimmer's gonna beat it is in a bracket race where the Bimmer gets a five second head start.

Wait a minute - I love John Phillips. He's the sole reason why I still read C&D anymore. As an impressionable kid, his tales about traversing Iceland in a Land Cruiser, entering New Zealand banger rallies in a Saab 9-2, or the annual 10Best Winners and Losers feature made me laugh until I cried and peed myself. Hell, I even bought his first book.
So this doesn't really come as a surprise: it's a clever way of reviewing a completely polarizing car, and it doesn't really show the X6M kicking the snot out of that sweet Chevy Nova. It's the principle of the matter, I suppose.
And yes, I still do like Car and Driver. Honda and BMW biases aside.
I cant beleive that car and driver wood be so irrisponsable. Every-body knows that racing is dangerous and that picturs like that make people think that there suvs can do anything and its ok. They should have more respect then to rite an artical like that and be carefull their readers mite end up geting hurt or hurting some-body else. Im going to rite my siniter and report them.
So as far as car magazines go, which are the best ones to subscribe to? I already get Motor Trend and C&D, but will probably not renew the former. I was considering Automobile or Auto Week. Any recommendations?
Although Jalopnik has made these magazines miserably obsolete (by the time I got the issue with news about Chrysler entering bankruptcy, they had already been done and merged with Fiat for almost a week!) I still enjoy waiting for them every month.
Automobile is a nice magazine because they have great photographers. They are under the same parent company as Motor Trend, so the data they have for cars are usually shared (I used to work for them). Therefore if you like Motor Trend you should also like Automobile as well.
@neko613: Automobile also has Ezra Dyer, who writes a properly Jalop article on drag racing. 0-60 has potential, but in my opinion has yet to fulfill it, aside from their recent article on the monster cars of Norway. However, the only subscriptions I'm considering are evo and Grassroots Motorsports.
@skitter: I agree, Automobile and 0-60, if we're not including the British Triumvirate, that absolutely pwns all comers: evo, car and Top Gear.
0-60 is improving, and gradually winning me over. Of all of them, it's the one I'd want to write for, because they actually seem to know what they're talking about, they're not full of themselves, and they are improving noticeably with every issue.
@Deartháir II: The Return: Upon reading those reviews at ridelust, it seemed like C&D came out the best of the American mags...sort of ironic considering the post this sits under.
@dragon951: In fairness, it really is, but that's only because they have the most resources. Automobile and 0-60 do as good a job with far, far, FAR less money, which I think makes us think they're so much better. C&D is still excellent, but it won't be for very long. It's degrading, while the two upstarts are improving dramatically.
@wojo to Ford-Awesome SHO, Great Job!: I woud go with Automobile, unless you only visit the bathroom once a week. I grew up calling the latter "Dump Week" for amount of time it takes to read one cover-to-cover.
Car and Driver has apparently taken to the New York Times method of journalism. It's really despicable and tantamount to an engineer faking calculations. Sure, the outcome is less deadly...you hope.
I like Car and Driver, but they need to tighten down on their so-called journalists. This is the sort of shit I'd expect from Top Gear (where it would be accompanied by some outrageous, barely believable story) or Motor Trend (seeking to prove they are really car guys and not the politicians they have become).
@BadUncle: the inside cover 2-page spread is X5M and X6M ad. And that's it. However, it is normal that magazines will send an editorial calendar to advertisers because companies want an ad presence alongside any editorial. Usually they don't know if it's favorable or not.
However, it's rare a buff book ever writes anything too scathing.
I have a current C&D subscription, and kept every issue since I started getting it back in 1979.
There was a time not that long ago, when I seriously considered letting it lapse.
The humor was gone, I was tired of seeing BMW win every "contest", and the fun was lacking...then they did the diesel beaters article, and I was glad I still had a subscription. As a bonus, when shopping "new" cars, it's nice to be able to go back and see what the reviews were.
This was my first introduction to LeMons, so it kinda led me to Jalopnik, though I honestly can't remember how I found this site...which has become my 'mistress'.
I took R&T concurrently, until the late-80's, at which point R&T exceeded my British car and racing story limit, and school books/tuition cut into every aspect of my budget.
To those wondering why this "old skool" print is still around...it's nice to have pages to turn and to read printed words...if you can read, that is.
@Glenfiddich is good: as I noted, I did drop it. The writing has become juvenile and a parody of self and it has began to drip with ann arbor lefty elitism.
@Glenfiddich is good: And whenever people write to them about the slipping quality of their magazine, they scoff and give a ridiculous excuse. Still better then MT though.

@Glenfiddich is good: I concur, I've also had CandD since the 70's, and almost let it go. Those complaining bitches were getting on my nerves. Some may not be happy that Alterman has taken over, or that David E is back on the team. But I for one, am happy as a clam. CandD used to be a fun mag, but the crap that spews from their editorials in past, made my blood boil.
Cars are supposed to be fun, and reading about them should be too, that's why I check this site often. If CandD can bring the fun back I won't consider chuckin them like MT. Glad to see they've started already, there response wasn't serious, didn't need to be, the article wasn't a road test, it was hooning an SUV. Apologize for what? Fun is back at CandD .. lighten up guys.
We learned early on to take anything on the Web with a big ol' salt lick-sized grain of salt. It might be BS, it might be legit. Look for confirmation. Even Wikipedia can't be trusted.
But the buff books, even as glacially slow to bring "news" as they are, are supposed to be, if not timely, then at least reliable. Journalistic ethics and all that.
Well, this just shitcanned that little concept. Nice work, guys. Way to keep the readers.
