Maybe a followup to Virgil Exner's T101, the last of the straight 8 Bugattis:

I think they might have figured out a way to save money on all that R&D now that the brand is so distinguished and hasn't got much to prove. Rather than taking lots of money and buying materials and then building a damn fast car with the materials, VW group are now doing:

1)Take money from rich Middle-Eastern customer

2)Glue money together into one giant car-shape

3)Put in pedals, also made from pure, unadulterated, US legal tender

    4)???

    5)Profit

    6)UK Pound special edition

    7)Euro special edition

    8)???

    9)More profit

bugatti is actually pretty smart if you think of it, by putting out all these versions of the veyron, the resale value doesnt drop and can be turned around and sold for more than the purchase price. that is for those who can afford it in these depression like days

Bugatti needs to develop an entry level model. Something for the hedge fund types as they wait for their investments to reinflate, before they move on to the Veyron. A nice Versace edition, based on a Polo should do nicely.

During the last Golden Age here in the states, there were hyper-exotic cars offered at that time, with classic nameplates from around the world: Duesenberg, Isotta-Fraschini, Hispano-Suiza, Marmon, Pierce Arrow, Cord, Auburn, Stutz, Packard, and many more, and they are now all dead, dead, dead! Even Bugatti died only to be revived a couple of times.

We just passed from the New Golden Age, when greed overcame common sense, when just having the best wasn't good enough.... noooooooo, you had to have the most outrageous, ultra hyped, exotic that your new stolen treasure could buy.... Will any of the new Ultra Exotic Car Companies survive? Gumpbert? (no), Bugatti? (with Porsche controlling VW, maybe not), Lamborghini? (Also maybe not), Aston Martin? (Probably not), Ferrari? (in a shrunken form, maybe), Rolls and Bentley? well they are downsizing their products, so maybe yea.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it's going to get a lot worse that it will get any better. Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy ride!

How about something based on the R8, but a little more austere and classy, while maintaining daily driveability? Price it around $150k.

Seems like that would maintain the VAG "two-house brand families" pretty well, while exposing Bugatti to wider audience.
