Keep in mind, all you new teams considering E30s, that most of the E30s in this race finished much, much, much lower in the standings. #24hoursoflemonstexas
Congrats! E30 or not, we all know it's hard work, good driving, and more than a little luck to get the win. See you all in Portland for the ChumpCar race next week!
Till then, Murilee's guaranteed to keep you in great pics (cause he rules!) #24hoursoflemonstexas
It was the only saving grace of the 1980 F-100 heap-O-shit I piloted for a few years.
Gotta love perfect primary and secondary balance. In fact, the 3.2L in my '95 E320 is so smooth, even with it missing on 1.5 cylinders, I didn't feel too bad driving it for three weeks while I diagnosed the problem then waited on parts.
I have to admit, it's nice to have it back to "is it running", smoothness.
@send lawyers, guns, and money: When I bought Henrietta, my pictured '66 F100, the 240 six sounded like someone shaking a coffee can full of loose nuts and bolts. Paid $750.00 for her, BTW. Pulled the valve cover, and there were BROKEN PUSHRODS in there. And it ran. Still. New head, then soon after the bottom end blew. Bearings. Reman bottom end, and the things has run pretty much flawlessly since 1999. Oh yeah, I did all that work outside.
Yeah, I like a straight six myself. Good honest technology. Being a Luddite works for me. #24hoursoflemonstexas
@CptSevere: Almost every Big/Medium Truck you see every day has a I-6 diesel pushing it, it's when they try and make a V-8 do the work of an I-6 in a pick-up that it get's all wonky. If an I-6 is too big, get an I-4.. #24hoursoflemonstexas
@coupeZ600: More bearings on a longer crank, right? Crank flex is an issue, but more bearings fixes that. A V configured engine has a shorter crank, but less room for bearings, plus more pistons torquing on it. That's my understanding, anyhow.
Fun trivia fact: Packard's 327 straight eight had five main bearings. That's a lot. I think my SBC in the motorhome has four.
Hey, the 3 cylinder two stroke Suzuki I used to ride was way smooth, too. The same amount of power strokes per revolution as a four stroke six. #24hoursoflemonstexas
@coupeZ600: Sorry, been fighting the brilliance of the IHC VT-365/Ford Power-Stroke all weekend, by phone no less. Even 10 years ago, you could talk a driver through how to by-pass all that B.S. and get it home at least, now you have to reprogram the ECM (reprogramming failed!) and then you call the tow-truck. #24hoursoflemonstexas
All the haters need to realize its about having fun. Either driving fun to drive cars or by driving awful to drive cars in a fun way. That's why they have the IOE award. Don't get mad just because some guys choose to take the racing side seriously and build the best machines they can for the least amount of money, whereas others have their fun by joking around and being creative and funny. Different strokes for different folks because there is no right answer. #24hoursoflemonstexas
@jodark: As long as they're within the rules and spirit of the race, as these folks presumably are, I agree. I still think there ought to be some penalty for the bottom-finishing not-totally-garbooned E30 and/or Miata in each race, though. #24hoursoflemonstexas
@jodark: Damn straight. We decided to race an E30 because it was a car that could actually go decently fast and had a readily available bolt in cage, which was a big issue since we built the car with just hand tools.
Granted, this was 3 years ago when there weren't so many E30s, but you're absolutely right in that some teams want to go fast and some want to take the oddball angle. I wholeheartedly solute those who choose to race the strangest car possible., but since our team was made up of average joes who hadn't had much track time, and didn't have a full race shop or deep pockets to support our efforts, we wanted to get the best car our meager budget would allow for max speed/fun per dollar.
Having said that, mechanical woes ended our first race and put a big dent in our second, so anyone who thinks an E30 is a slam dunk winner is on crack!
However I do agree that teams running a 325i do deserve a bit more heckling than those who run a 325e (50 less HP, 5K RPM redline). I am a little biased, though!
I suppose they deserve congrats but it's an E30, FFS. Maybe there'll have to be a no E30, no Miata exclusionary rule somewhere...or a special E30/Miata class. #24hoursoflemonstexas

Primary and secondary dynamic balances... I'll learn that eventually, but man sounds like a real clincher. #24hoursoflemonstexas

Yep, I'd forgotten, somehow, the diesel pushing our 30K lb. motorhome around at around 10.5-11 mpg, is also an I6.
It's a great platform for smoothosity. #24hoursoflemonstexas
