I was at Retromobile last weekend and saw some amazing DS & SM specials. At the Bonham's auction, a four door SM sold for around $200k and a '73 Chapron DS cabriolet sold for a crazy $440k!
I feel like they're a fairly regular bay area sighting, but I hang out with a bunch of weirdos. I mean, I know four different people that own Alfa SSs.
At first, I thought this was the immaculate red DS21 that went on the Pullover Rally in November: [jalopnik.com] But no, this one has newer plates, and a white roof rather than a silver one. That means there are at least TWO gorgeous red DS21s running around the San Francisco Bay Area. It's cold and rainy here today, but I can still be happy to live in NorCal because of the surprising number of running, driving Citroens.
Ha... and I've been drinking French wine all day. How did you know?!
This car is great. I would be afraid to expose it to the Midwestern air, but these are just gorgeous. It feels like it's actuating the hydraulics in my pants!
Why is it that even after all these years nobody has put out a mass produced car anywhere near as freakishly cool looking as those old Citroens (DS and, to a lesser degree, SM)?
That thing is glorious. It just needs the euro-style tilt headlamps, and its set. I'd buy a DS in a heartbeat. Not so sure about the SM, but the DS- most def!
@sos10: I dunno, I find the SM a little to "70's" for my taste.
Lets compare
There's no doubt that the SM ls a good looking car, and I'd add it to my stable any day. But I just really like the classic lines of the DS. It's just fantastically designed. And I think the wagon looks great also. Anyways, if I had the money to buy one of them, I definitely wouldn't pass it up. (As long as it wasn't a total Crack pipe) The Citroën dealer in my city is even still open (it's a Saab-place now), and I know they would service it.
@UDMan: That is a very different taste. To each his own, as they say. I find the DS way sexier, but this kind of exchange is what makes this place great - the offshoots that evolve in the comments.
What a spectacular looking car! The french back in the day really had it. I think it looks in a pretty ok condition aswell. These go for 100k plus is pristine condition in auction, well at least before the recession. They where the first commercial vehicles to have hydraulic suspensions. The driver could raise or lower the car depending on how the road was. Great post thank you...
@Jérôme de Sad: As has been discussed before, please DO NOT SPAM Jalopnik. Nobody really cares that you have your own car blog. I dare say that many of us have car blogs, but normal accounts are banned if they spam the site the way you do.
@Elderly Douche, acarr260: Even out here on the West Coast, they're pretty damn rare. They're around, as this photo proves, but I'd consider any DS sighting an event.
I picked "nice price" but I think I really meant "nice car."
You could really only drive this along the Riviera and you would have to be handsome and virile with Grace Kelly or Brigit Bardot or maybe Audrey Hepburn along with you, complete with big sunglasses and headscarf etc etc.
All that is way out of my league. I don't deserve this car.
@NovaloadMissesPolar: Perfectly put. No one deserves this car, but some rich guy will probably buy it and stick it in a garage, never to be driven again. Bastard!
The perfect car for cruising around my villa in Nice. It might be hard to come up with the scratch though, unless I can sweet talk Fanny Eubanks from Omaha.

My wish list is a baby blue Déesse Wagon with white interior and a black SM with red leather inside... please!

Heck, in 4 years in Paris I've only seen 2.
I'm guessing most of them got crushed or rusted away.

Seriously. And I've only seen 3 UFOs ever. Well, UFOs to me. I'm sure Mulder could explain them.
