I worked as a lot boy for a Dodge dealer when these were new. I drove my manager's R/T all over Ontario on various important errands, like getting sandwiches from a shop fifty miles away. They were fun for minutes at a time but those Chrysler interiors made me want to shoot myself when I had to just drone down the highway for hours. Funny how things...don't...change. I still voted Nice Price because of the stoplight fun.
My Driver's Ed car was a non-turbo 4-cylinder Acclaim of this era, so I got some wheel time with this chassis. My grandparents also owned a non-turbo 4-cylinder Spirit just a few years newer than this that I drove on rare occasion. My grandpa joked that the car left a trail of parts behind it as trim pieces fell off and what not. However, their car never had a mechanical breakdown. It outlived my grandparents with nothing more than a battery replacement.
That said, these things drove like crap. I was always impressed with this 2.2 that put out more than 100 hp/liter back in the day, but it seems too much of a match for this chassis. To put it in NASCAR terms, it's "all ate up with motor."
Regardless, this is a really nice example of a rare car that will sneak up and scare the bajeezus out of your passengers. Nice Price, but somebody please fix that sun-faded steering wheel.
Woow. I'm calling my dad right now, trying to convince him to pick it up. He still thinks that his normally aspirated, ex-Enterprise rental car '93 Dodge Spirit was one of the best cars ever built.
My mom had a Lancer back in the day with a turbocharged 2.2 and a 5-speed which is probably very similar to this setup, so I know how thrashable and fun this could be.
$3100 is nothing to pay for the fun you could have, plus this car looks to be in great shape to boot.
After more thought, and having to put the phone down, twice, after already dialing the area code, I have a perfect sleeper conversion for it.
First, remove all the R/T cosmetic bits. Steelies with wheel covers. Next, have it painted Sunburn Silver. Y'know, what all silvers of that era looked like after 7 years in the sun of the south/southwest.
Spend copious amounts of time researching what can be done to this engine with low likelyhood of grenading it. Proceed to experiment.
After you thrash plenty a ricer in your 'hood, remove the OEM door skins, go get a couple of junkyard ones, kick 'em hard a couple of times, pull the dents out with a puller but don't do anything else, then go hunting again.
Where's my phone.
I know the torque steer will send me into a tree/building/alternate universe, but hey, you've gotta die of something. Might as well have fun doing it.
Well, it's certainly a nice price, considering condition, and the effort put into the restoration. However, it's kind of like getting 50% off on five pounds of head cheese. And I don't eat head cheese.
Nice Price. This one has been for sale for a while, and the seller wanted $5000 for it back in September. That seemed a little steep, but $3100 seems like a bargain.
It's the perfect car for me, but I know it would kill me. And right now I'm at a stage in my life where I'm trying to avoid dying. Maybe I need to buy it (without telling my wife), hide it away in a storage facility somewhere, and break it out when the time is right.
I wonder how many Nice Price voters have driven one of these. They were endowed with decent power and ... well ... that's pretty much it. The rest of the car deserved no acclaim.
@Alfisted: But compared to what? Compared to the other cars I drove at the time, ranging from a beater '83 Firebird to my friends '86 Daytona Turbo and my parents' new Achieva coupe, it was fine. My access to the cars of Lotus and BMW was still 15 or so years away. Heck, I was still a couple years from owning my first Jetta at that point.
@Jimal is a non-attorney spokesperson: Good point. My DD at that point was a Legend. Honestly, though, I remember short time with one of these as one of my more laughable automotive experiences, right up there with the aforementioned Achieva, although not as bad as an early Hyundai Excel.
@Alfisted: Excel? Thats nothing. Briefly after high school I worked for a pizza place that boasted (now wait for this) a fleet of Yugos as delivery vehicles. After that anything, including the Spirit, is a quantum leap.
Nice price, as long as the cylinder head is in good shape. From what I understand, that DOHC head is made of unobtainium.
I'll always have a soft spot for turbo Dodges as I used to have an Omni GLH with GLHS powertrain. It was a lot of fun beating up on Mustangs at the strip, at least until the fuel pump went bad, the engine went lean under boost, and I ended up with banana shaped rods.
Hmm maybe my memory of turbo Dodges isn't so fond after all.
