Just when I think that I can't hate the Prius more, they come out with something like this.
A centrally mounted display takes longer to fixate on, and while it is nice that they made the buttons so that you don't have to look at them, if it takes longer to look at and then return your eyes to the road.
It would be nice that users won't have to look at the buttons while on the road if it wasn't for the fact that most people are already familiar with the locations of their controls, from having used them on a daily basis since they purchased the car. Think about it, when was the last time that you had to look to find the volume button on your radio?
When it comes to designing a safe display, the major concern should be limiting the amount of visual stimuli that is eliminated due to saccadic suppression. Putting the display in the center increases it.
It's another stupid gimmick that doesn't work in the real world, much like the Prius itself.

It's a cool idea. Yeah, it took me all of two minutes to familiarise myself with the steering wheel buttons on my Prius--they're pretty intuitive--but, you know me, I'm all for technology-for-the-sake-of-technology...!
Excellent idea for the Prius driver who is likely to be distracted, trying to remember if it's time for Boots to get her heartworm medicine or when the compost pile was last turned.
I like the idea, but can't say I've ever really had trouble finding and using well-placed buttons in my own vehicle. Dash real estate is precious and I'm not sure the clutter is worth the tradeoff.
@Ash78: I'm with you there. The current ride has steering wheel buttons, and it's pretty obvious if I've pressed the wrong one as it does something I do not expect. They all have a different location and feel, so after a few days I had them learned. So it would be ideal if you could turn this off and replace them with something useful, like an indication the ICE was running or how many Canadian wastelands you were making.
