    Still a better choice:

An interesting evolution of the Tri-Magnum design that I've always liked (I'm a sucker for reverse-trikes). I think the power train is the most interesting part - if I'm reading it right, the diesel engine powers the rear wheel and electric motors power the front, but the two are not connected. To charge the battery, you just push the front wheels. Not as efficient, probably, as direct charging but probably a lot cheaper.

I'd be a little concerned about the power, with only 23hp in the diesel motor, you'd better hope you've got a full charge going up a hill. But other than that (well that and the questionable design choices like the nose, wheels and air scoops) I like it. Let's hope I can get it complete for $15k.

@weatherman: You're mostly right, but you have the powered wheels reversed. The diesel powers the front wheels and the electric powers the rear. You can select electric-only power for up to 40 miles, diesel only power, or a combo of the two.

    So close, but so far.

Normally I complain about vehicles like this looking like total dorkmobiles.

The pseudo-body kit on the side and the 3-spoke chrome wheels are more like when the really dorky kid decided he was going to try and be cool.

You know with three wheels this thing is defined as a motorcycle, so that means in most states a helmet will be required for the driver and passenger (some states, just the passenger). Wonder how that's going to help sells?

@Flathead Smith: LAws vary state-to-state, the Can-Am Spyder is registered as a car or a motorcycle depending on the state in question. So you have to wear a helmet in motorcycle states and nothing in car states, how bizarre is that?

@lilwillie heart clicks GM: It would be extremely expensive in terms of the strain you be put under by the massive amount of cognitive dissonance you would experience as the owner of such a vehicle.

Why couldn't VW justify their diesel/electirc hybrid again? Guess it was that costly certification.

@Quattro-luvr with Peugeot humility: Yeah, I instantly thought of the GR3, too. Too expensive to certify as a small volume showroom trinket. And VW's not in the kit car biz...too bad they didn't license the design to someone willing to take the risk.

I thought three wheelers such as this were inherently unstable?

@leavethegun-takethecannoli: They're far more stable if the front has two wheels with a single rear drive wheel. See: T-Rex [www.campagnamotors.com]

@leavethegun-takethecannoli: Like they said, a reverse trike is incredibly stable; probably more so than 4 wheels with the right suspension.

@leavethegun-takethecannoli: The problem is in the three wheelers where the single is out front. Trikes with two front and one rear only have issues with failure to hold line in turns. They tend to spin out and oversteer. This can actually be addressed fairly easily in design. I'd be more concerned about the lack of rear visibility myself.
