Cobo Hall Deal Killed By Detroit City Council
2010 Detroit Auto Show Press Preview Cut To Two Days

Doen't your calendar run something like:
Riot, car show, riot, riot, car show, riot, riot, riot.

I used to love going downtown to Cobo for various events. Greektown has a decent resturant or two. Most bars in the area are serviceable. I'm at Comerica Park at least ten times a year. They even have a couple of very decent concert venues all located downtown.
Seeing what's going on and how the situation is being treated doesn't even make me want to go back. The only thing that city has to offer me now is my beloved Tigers games and one of a kind Arabic food.

God damn, it's so cold in the D...

Thank you Monica Conyers. Your greed and divisiveness have truly screwed us all. But what do I know? I live in the suburbs.
02/25/09
You still have the best Mediterranean and Arabic cuisine this side of the globe, and the Detroit Tigers.
That's all I can think of.
I grew up 15min South of downtown off 75. Are you north, south, or west?
02/25/09
The Mediterranean food is great, but it isn't going to bring people to this city. They have built all these new hotels that are now going to sit empty. People don't come to Detroit from outside the area just to visit. They come for events. The Superbowl was an awesome attraction, but it only happens once. The Auto Show brought the world to Detroit every year.
Hopefully something can be done, but with Conyers running the show and more concerned with her kickbacks than the well-being of the region my hope is dimming.

Actually, yes. I grew up on Grosse Ile/Trenton. I moved away to go to college and chase a girl in Louisiana then I moved back to Michigan a few years ago. I'm now in Columbus Ohio (for a year now) and don't plan on leaving. It's probably the only city in the midwest worth a damn right now (with the exception of all these goddamn Buckeyes).
Whenever I come home the first thing I do is drive up to dearborn and get some Mediterranean. I used to go to La Shish, but well, not anymore obviously.
But you're right. There is absolutely nothing there to bring people from outside the state. There's bearly enough there for people to want to go even if they're within an hour away.

This reminds me ... do you remember the electronic musical festival they started years ago? How the first time they held it there were millions of people from all over the globe. Then they starter charging asinine amounts to get in and it almost halved the attendance.
Yet another thing Detroit has screwed the pooch on.
02/25/09
I'm thinking now is the time to get out.
But then again, I'm a Detroiter now and have that imbicilic optimism that goes along with it.
02/25/09
I don't think the words optimism and Detroiter belong in the same sentence anymore.
I get my lentil soup, chicken shwarma with greens salad and I'm out.
Wait ... you said you're a Detroiter, now? As in you weren't before but you are now?
02/25/09
Now I have a house and a wife, so its a bit harder to escape.
02/25/09
Well I hope you've been able to at least explore some of Detroit's finer qualities.
That must have been huge initial culture shock. My ex lived in Ontario California for a while and I was only there a week and didn't want to leave. In 'n Out Burger sucked me in.

And the biggest things I miss about California are In-N-Out and the ocean. Its probably good I don't live there or I would need a UHaul truck to take me to In-N-Out. mmmmmmm...Double Double Animal Style with fries and a strawberry shake.

Of course, I have it on good authority that next year Jalopnik will be going green and won't bother with those non-ecofriendly batteries:

The 2010 Detroit Auto Show is proud to debut the offerings of the recently nationalized "big-three" automaker conglomerate.
Americar and sister company AMTRUCK have taken the cream of the crop of products from the former Ford, GM and Chrysler/Jeep companies, and is now producing these models in volume at federally-subsidized factories around the country.
The models making their world debut at this year's show include: the Americar Sebring, Escort and sassy Aveo. AMTRUCK introductions include the sporty Compass, rugged Dakota and practical H2 family wagon.
All models include the new Americar or AMTRUCK badging which includes the motto "Socially engineered for sensible Americans"
The new cars and trucks will be made available immediately, however consumer deliveries may be limited to five days a week due to budget overruns.

AmeriGov, producing vehicles solely for the purposes of the American government: such exemplary vehicles as:
- The AmeriGov Crown Victoria -- completely unchanged to reluctantly serve the needs of Police Forces and the new Federal Department of Taxi Services!
- The AmeriGov Suburban -- Serving the needs of the Secret Service, FBI, and other heavily-armed military wings tasked with curbing civil unrest and maintaining order.
- The AmeriGov DTS -- based on the excellent front-wheel-drive DTS sedan, it provides economical -- and luxuriously slow! -- transportation for government dignitaries.
Naturally, none of these vehicles will be available directly to the public, as the general populace would never have any need for a RWD V8 Sedan, a large sport-ute, or a full-sized luxury sedan. For enthusiasts, however, desiring something unique, take heart! Lightly-used -- and fully repaired! -- versions will be available at government auctions in only ten years' time!
