substitute that with a Segway, is like inventing a garbage disposal type apparatus for your face, and announcing that chewing will no longer be necessary. Sure, it's interesting. But also redundant.

Humans have evolved for millenia to produce the most efficient upright bipedal locomotion in the mammalian world: walking.

The problem with the Segway was that laws were enacted as faster than distribution could take place to keep the device out of urban areas. Great concept, but the backwards urban environment of today did not give it a chance.

In today's politically correct world, the elevator would also be outlawed for risk of falling from heights.

@cgarison: I think that's a gross exaggeration, since it was already illegal to use on sidewalks (motorized, capable of moving faster than a walking pace, not a handicapped mobility device) and streets (too slow, no lights or signaling devices, not human powered) almost everywhere before it was even unveiled. To make this legal and safe to use in an urban environment would require massive overhaul of the transportation infrastructure. Just throwing them into the mix and expecting things to sort themselves out in, say, New York City would result in chaos and more than a few fatalities due to driver/rider inattention and/or road rage.

The elevator comment is not only unrelated but untrue, as elevator safety brakes (which are virtually failure proof) were perfected by Elisha Otis in 1854. [en.wikipedia.org]

    Thanks for playing!

The Segway had a ridiculous amount of hype attached to it.
It was billed as the next great advance in transportation, something on par with the creation of the airplane or the internal combustion engine.

It turned out to just be a fun, geeky, super-expensive toy.

I guess Kamen is either waking up to reality or finally admitting it.

Oh sure, mock the Segway now. But when you see someone pull up to a LeMons race with two sub-$500 specimens welded together, you'll fully realize Dean Kamen's vision.

Needless complication in response to a question that no one was ever going to ask = the antithesis of engineering.

Needless complication in response to an actual problem = the actual practice of engineering.

Keeping something as simple as possible to accomplish a given task = the ideal that is typically forgotten by engineers once thrust into the workplace.
