@elwood: Didn't you watch last year's Le Mans? They had a whole bunch in the race. ACO talked about mandatory switch to closed-cockpit race cars, but that fell through, so both are perfectly acceptable.
A serious long-shot by Aston Martin. Audi designed the R15 specifically b/c the R10 was too *slow* compared to the 908. AM is now betting against speed, torque, (probably) superior reliability, and better fuel economy.
IIRC, this car was a product of a rules allowance that lets you run the engine from a production-based racer in a prototype chassis--this is essentially a DBR9-powered Lola sports racer. Also, I *think* the production-engined prototypes get some rules perks that give teams incentive to run against the dedicated prototypes like the Audi R10/R15. Which begs the question--why don't we have a C6R-powered LMP1 entry? "Because GM is lame and broke" is an acceptable answer.
@theeastbaykid: That part really sucks. Were it not for the Carpocalypse, the General might have mailed Jim Hall a copy of the ACO rulebook with a note saying, "See how many loopholes you can find and give us a call..."
Seriously though, Audi is bringing the R10s back to Le Mans aren't they? Those big diesels will be hard to beat. I do give AM props for getting out there and mixing it up with the Germans. As they'll be the underdog, I'll be rooting for them.
@graverobber: Philip Landrigan Edition: Funny, it wasn't that long ago the Audis were considered the underdogs for trying to run diesels. Then they bitchslapped the entire field, and all of a sudden everyone else is the underdog.
@graverobber: Philip Landrigan Edition: ACO's been putting up restrictions for diesel race cars. And given that the Charouz Lola-Astons were the fastest of the rest, and that they lost their chances at victory due to crashes, but still finished ahead of an Audi, they have a good chance at victory.
@Adidac425: Martini & Rossi have a great color combo, but it is hard to beat the Aston color combo. Only Lazio, an Italian soccer team, has a better color combo.
@Adidac425: Sadly, Porsche has monopoly on the Martini livery. And yes. They whore it out. A lot. I procured a Porsche Design catalogue and it's full of martini liveried junk.
@graverobber: Philip Landrigan Edition: I stand by my belief that LeMans should be adopting more rules from LeMons. Like a "Bullshit Inspection" before each race. I'll guarandamntee you that every team in LeMans is cheating somehow. Get them to fucking admit it, bribe the judges with Crown Royal, take a lap penalty, and away you go. Would make for better racing.
