GM has to have bought the rights to being the "Offical Pace Car" for Indy.
The last Ford was in 1994 and Dodge in 1996. Come on! A Bravada in 2001? Enough Corvette Pace Cars to make a parking lot from Detroit to Indianapolis ! (6 times in the last nine years!) Come on !

It's a tradition, a show of pride. Finances be damned, this is a very big part of what GM should be doing, what the Big 3 need to be doing: putting on a good show of their good products. The fact they can stir up a little tradition and nostalgia is just an added bonus.
Premise 1) Congress wants GM to sell more cars so that they can get the loan money back.
Premise 2) GM has good cars to sell.
Premise 3) Good cars are meaningless without the marketing necessary to show people that you have good cars.
Premise 4) More than one good, high-profile car has failed for lack of sufficent marketing.
Conclusion?
Marketing in a manner that will display a vehicle to thousands of people at a relatively minimal cost (see RLJ's post below) is a good move, finances be damned, because without marketing, products will not sell, and if products do not sell, your financial situation becomes a moot point.
See? A little critical thinking sometimes goes farther than a knee-jerk sarcastic remark.
I was half expecting Chrysler to dust off an old craigslist Dodge Daytona with "Offishul Pace Car" sharpied on the side. Would have been far more budget-centric.

And yes, GM needs to let someone else have a turn at Indy. Seriously.

Well, let's think about it this way:
Premise 1) Congress wants GM to sell more cars so that they can get the loan money back.
Premise 2) GM has good cars to sell.
Premise 3) Good cars are meaningless without the marketing necessary to show people that you have good cars.

At least you still know what it is, and could point it out when you see it on the street, unlike the camcordlant6ima.
