    Question: Is it Jalopnik-approved to buy this thing, put a modern high-revving 4-banger into it, and have a lightweight sleeper? Not that I have the money to do any of that, but I'm looking at this thinking it's a perfect project car and the comments here make me think the Jalopnik secret police will throw me in the Jalopnistan gulag for thought crimes.


    Seriously though, cool car. Like everyone else here, if I had $3000 plus travel money, I'd be all over this in a heartbeat.

    @despisethesun: I won't say no outright, but I strongly recommend that you search extensively for a non-runner first.

    @despisethesun: Normally I'd say that an engine upgrade would be a great idea, but this is one of the very last relatively unmolested 411s on the planet. Probably best to keep the original running gear.

    Have you ever driven one of these? 1300cc's of get-you-to-60mph-sometime-today power. A period-correct upgrade would be an R16 out of a 311 Roadster, although I think that tiny engine compartment is calling out for a rotary.

    @Gearhead's Garage: I rode in it from Alameda to Vallejo for the Motoring J Style show, and it was indeed pretty damn slow (though not anywhere near as slow as, say, a VW Rabbit Diesel). I think staying original is still worth it in this case.

    @Ambiguously Fuzzy Plushroom: It's actually not quite as vivid a shade of red as it appears in the photos. More like an orangy/faded red.

    And like @Gearhead's Garage said, it's not like you could really source all the original interior & trim bits to put it back to original. Cuz that's the only way this machine should be done.

    @thunder; now eta-powered: The problem is that it starts and drives every time it's asked to do so, even when it's been sitting for a few weeks. It just doesn't have that Hell Aura about it.
