As reported, the MKT will be getting EcoBoosted with a 3.5-liter V6 good for 340 horsepower and 340 lb-ft of torque. As you'll notice from the photos, the MKT has the glass roof and huge rump from the concept car. More details in the spy report below.

Lincoln MKT Spy Report
Lincoln's Ford Flex-based MKT crossover made an appearance in Death Valley to do some hot-weather mountain runs in the 120-degree heat. Our desert sighting gave us a chance to get a closer look at the MKT, and this production model's faithful transition from the MKT concept which appeared at the last Detroit Auto Show.

Ford made the MKT's future official with an announcement at the recent Pebble Beach Concours dElegance, confirming that the Lincoln would be built alongside the Ford Flex at Ford's Oakville, Ontario assembly plant. A 3.7-liter, V-6 engine will power the standard MKT, while the MKS' EcoBoost turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 will be optional, putting 340 hp and 340 lb-ft of torque at the ready. A six-speed automatic transmission be used in all MKTs.

A glass roof was visible on this prototype, to add to the MKT's upmarket cachet.

<![CDATA[ 2009 Ford Flex Scores Five Stars For Frontal- And Side-Impacts ]]> The new 2009 Ford Flex has scored five-star safety ratings from NHTSA in all four front and side-impact tests. The Flex numbers beat those of the rival Toyota Highlander, which received a four-star rating for the passenger in frontal tests. Ford also scored a four-star rating in the rollover test using both 2WD and 4WD Flex models, all of which should assuage some of the concerns of soccer moms afraid to tote the brood around in anything smaller than an H1 Alpha. Full release from Ford after the jump.

FORD FLEX HITS SAFETY PINNACLE WITH 5-STAR RATINGS

- Flex earns U.S. government's top 5-star crash ratings for all four front- and side-impact tests - adding to Ford's leading number of 5-star vehicles.

- The daringly designed and fuel-efficient seven-passenger crossover continues to draw praise and customer interest.

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 5, 2008 - The 2009 Ford Flex has earned five-star frontal- and side-impact crashworthiness ratings, the highest possible scores, in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests.

The results for Ford's newest full-size crossover are better than the Toyota Highlander's and include class-leading four-star rollover ratings for both the front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.

"The 5-star ratings for the Flex are evidence of Ford's overall safety commitment. In fact, we have produced more 5-star-rated vehicles than any other automaker," said Susan Cischke, Ford's senior vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. "The Flex offers it all: a head-turning design, top safety ratings, unsurpassed highway fuel efficiency in its segment, power, spaciousness, comfort and great features."

Flex safety standard

Flex, which went on sale this summer, has a full array of standard safety equipment.

This includes dual front air bags, headliner mounted side curtain air bags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, Ford-exclusive AdvanceTrac® with RSC® (Roll Stability Control™) and tire pressure monitoring system.

Flex gets some of its core strength from the use of lightweight aluminum-coated boron steel - one of the strongest weld-able materials - in the body structure. The use of high-strength steel in the B-pillars is only part of the Flex's robust safety profile. Ford engineers also located the side door intrusion beams to help manage and absorb energy during side impact crashes.

"Flex safety is built on a solid foundation - the platform of the 5-star rated Ford Taurus and Taurus X," said Gary Boes, Flex chief engineer.

How the Crash Ratings Work

NHTSA's frontal collision ratings are determined by placing crash-test dummies in the driver's seat and front-passenger seat and securing them with the vehicle's safety belts. Vehicles are then crashed into a fixed barrier at 35 mph, which is equivalent to a head-on collision between two similar vehicles that are moving at 35 mph. The 5-star rating attained by Flex indicates a 10 percent or less chance of serious injury to a belted occupant in the front seat.

Side-impact crash testing represents an intersection-type collision with a 3,015 pound barrier moving at 38.5 mph into the Flex, with crash test dummies buckled into the driver and rear passenger seats. Flex's five-star rating, the highest possible, indicates a 5 percent or less chance of serious injury.

"Safety is a top purchase consideration, second only to fuel efficiency, so Flex's top safety ratings and highway fuel economy are a winning combination," said Catherine Pearce, Flex marketing manager.

Even More Technology Works in Customers' Favor

Flex also can help drivers avoid problems on the road.

The new SIRIUS® Travel Link™ feature, praised for helping motorists find the cheapest gas, also can help route them around congested, potentially dangerous conditions using the vehicle's navigation system with real-time traffic information, available in select markets.

SYNC®, Ford's hands-free connectivity system for Bluetooth-enabled phones and digital music players, helps drivers keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel to reduce distractions.

<![CDATA[ Genesis Crossover/Wagon Not Expected Anytime Soon, Hyundai Deprives Countless Dozens From Buying Another Boring-UV ]]> After our news earlier on the XL-sized Genesis, here's the second piece of news-like rumor-busting for the day: We've been told by Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, President of R&D at Hyundai, that despite the rumors — and whether it be called a crossover, wagon or whatever-UV — don't expect to see another form factor from Hyundai on the Genesis platform anytime soon. While we mourn the loss of any opportunity for a rear-wheel drive wagon form factor, our dislike of crossovers in general is well documented. So we're both happy and sad. While we go and cry and laugh in a corner, take a moment to reflect yourself. That is all.

<![CDATA[ 2010 GMC Terrain ]]> Here's the very first shots of the General's upcoming Theta-based crossover that's all about being "Professional Grade" — the 2010 GMC Terrain. The Terrain's showing a big block-like grille peeking through the semi-transparent bra it's wearing. Our spy shooters even indicate they believe the mesh you see surrounding said badge may in fact be indicative of a Denali trim. All we know is the Terrain will be kissing cousins to the Vue, and the next-generation 2010 Chevy Equinox. Also, it looks mind-numbingly boring. But if you're still interested — for god only knows what reason — hit the jump for the full spy report from the quick-to-shoot spy snappers at KGP.

GM's Fourth Theta Variant Spotted on the road—Shows Some GMC Acadia Design Cues

The GMC Terrain has now hit the road giving us our first all-angles look at GM's latest Theta-based crossover for the first time. We spotted it last week in a holding pen, but we were lacking the confirming look at the prototype's grille. The blocky grille looks appropriate for a GMC, and the mesh grille design actually looks like this particular model could possibly be a Denali version.

This prototype gets further separation from its platform-mates (current Saturn Vue, next-gen Chevy Equinox, and the Theta-premium Cadillac BRX and Saab 9-4x), thanks to its blocky wheel arch design. This wheel well design is very similar to its GMC Acadia big brother.

While the upgraded Theta premium models for Cadillac and Saab show signs of a sloping, somewhat "coupe-like" roofline, the standard Theta-based Chevy Equinox and this GMC prototype maintain a flat roofline. Cargo capacity and functionality are clearly a higher priority for GM's volume brands. GMC's Terrain will supplant the Pontiac Torrent in GM's lineup, leaving Pontiac to focus on passenger cars, while playing to the strengths of the GMC lineup. The Terrain is expected to reach the market in mid-2009 as a 2010 model.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Cadillac BRX Caught In Wet T-Shirt Contest ]]> Showing off a bra that gets translucent when wet, the Theta-Epsilon chassis-ed 2010 Cadillac BRX was caught by star car spy shooter Chris Doane. The new CUV from the General is expected to start production in May of 2009 at the Ramos Arizpe plant with its platform-sharing cousin, the Saab 9-4X, in May of 2009 as a 2010 model year vehicle. So since the last shots of the 2010 BRX was spotted, what do we find as different? There's that grille — like the Provoq concept's drastic change from the Art & Science look of the past few years of the Cadillac brand. Full spy report below the jump and the large-scale shot here.

NEW Pictures of Cadillac's BRX!

During the last several months, photos have surfaced of a GM CUV identified as the Cadillac BRX. As it turns out, those photos were actually of the next-generation Chevy Equinox. Last week we caught the "real" BRX for the first time, and today we have more photos of an actual 2010 Cadillac BRX prototype.

Riding on GM's new TE (Theta-Epsilon) chassis, this new, smaller Caddy CUV will start production in May of 2009 at the Ramos Arizpe plant. The General will look to build about 75,000 units annually.

Codenamed GMT166, Cadillac will share the TE platform with Saab for the 9-4x CUV (GMT168) that starts production in the fall of 2009.

Powertrain choices will surely include the 300hp, direct-injection 3.6L V6 found in the CTS. A 2.0L turbo-diesel variant is also in the works, however, it remains to be seen whether that model will be sold in US.

Through the camouflage on this BRX prototype, we can see the production grill will follow the Provoq concept almost exactly, while the rear camouflage attempts to hide the true roof line - but we can tell the production green house will swoop downward in the rear just as it does on the Provoq. Quite honestly, we don't see many differences from the concept at all. It seems as if the tail fin tail lights of the concept may even find their way to production.

One thing we did not see on the concept - that we do see on the prototype - are the dual exhaust outlets integrated into the bumper. While shooting, we also noticed that the BRX will feature the same pop-up navigation screen that you find in the CTS sedan.

<![CDATA[ Nissan Qashqai+2 Revealed Ahead Of London Motor Show ]]> Nissan has issued the first pictures of its new seven-seater crossover vehicle that takes the Qashqai and cranks the knob up by "+2." That's right, it's called the Qashqai+2, an all-new bigger Qashqai that seats two more than the original model of the strangely-named CUV. Nissan accomplishes the increased room by upping the wheelbase size from the 103.5 inches found in the Qashqai to 108.86 inches and the overall length from 169.7 inches to 178.2 inches. The new Qashqai+2 will be launched at the London Motor Show in July and comes to UK showrooms in the autumn. No word yet on whether we'll see the new crossover from the Japanese side of Carlos Ghosn's global partnership of equals, but we truly doubt it because despite the Qashqai being named after a nomadic people in Iran, the CUV has traveled pretty much only throughout the nations of Europe. Still, bully for Nissan for bucking trends by moving super size in a world where that's making increasingly less sense. Full press release after the jump.

Going two better: Nissan Qashqai 2+2 unveiled SUNDERLAND, United Kingdom - As market rivals start to catch up with the segment defining Qashqai, Nissan has already moved the goalposts: the top selling compact Crossover has expanded its offer with a seven-seat version. Called Qashqai+2, the newest Nissan builds on the success of the original Qashqai by adding space and versatility to create the first Family Crossover.

"Qashqai has become an instant success in Europe. Its distinctive style appeals to buyers seeking something different: but that's only part of the story. Dynamic design, generous interior space, top quality materials and genuine driving enjoyment all contribute to make Qashqai a huge European success. Now comes the seven-seat Qashqai+2 to add a new dimension to the range... and to ensure Nissan continues to offer something no other manufacturer in the market segment can match," states Simon Thomas, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Nissan Europe.

Not content with breaking sales records, Nissan's Qashqai - the segment defining compact Crossover - is ready to break new boundaries. With the original version notching-up over 170,000 European sales since launch, Qashqai will soon be joined by a new seven-seat version.

Called Qashqai+2, the new model is seen by Nissan as the first Crossover for busy, active families and with the imminent arrival of the second generation Murano, helps to extend Nissan's Crossover offering to three distinctive models. Sales in Europe will begin in October.

Qashqai+2 customers will be looking for a car which has the space, convenience and utility of a traditional MPV, but who want a more attractive, sophisticated design. Nissan's research shows that customers of the existing Qashqai are clearly attracted to it by its design - three-quarters are new to Nissan - and this is a pattern that will continue with Qashqai+2. Those customers are not attracted to the existing people carriers with three rows. And at the same time, Nissan's research shows that an increasing number of customers in this area of the market are not interested in 'family' SUVs, with a third row of seats. They are perceived as too big and too boxy for their needs.

It is against this background that Nissan's European Product Planning team identified a pool of potential customers who are looking for a stylish yet practical family car. Qashqai+2 continues the Crossover theme so successfully pioneered by Qashqai, by sitting in between two well established segments of the market and drawing customers who aren't quite satisfied by either of those traditional options.

The results of early Qashqai+2 customer clinics showed that potential customers perceived it as being more family orientated, offering more independence, being ideal for going on family holidays and offering more fun than traditional choices.

They also recognised its increased practicality, space and versatility, as well as being more attractive and elegant than its alternatives.

Where Qashqai generally attracts buyers who have no kids or just one kid, or whose kids have already left the nest, Qashqai+2 will offer the rational advantages of a practical family car, with elements such as stylish design, premium interior quality and an engaging driving experience to satisfy the more emotional side of the buying equation.

Like the multi award-winning original, Qashqai+2 has been designed and engineered in Europe and will be built at Nissan's highly productive plant in Sunderland, in the UK.

In January this year, the plant - which produced a record 353,000 vehicles in 2007 - transferred production of Qashqai models built for export to Japan to the company's Kyushu plant in Japan to free extra production capacity for Europe. Furthermore, in June a third shift will be added to meet demand for surging sales.

"The arrival of Qashqai+2 will broaden the appeal of the range still further, so the third shift at Sunderland is absolutely vital if we are to keep up with the high demand for the model," says, Simon Thomas.

DESIGN & PACKAGING
Qashqai+2 shares clear family design DNA with the original, but is subtly different from virtually every angle. Created by designers at Nissan Design Europe in London's Paddington, the new model is essentially identical to Qashqai from the A-Pillar forward... but everything else behind has been changed.

With a wheelbase extended by 135 mm - taking it to 2,765 mm - the overall length of Qashqai+2 has risen to 4,526 mm, an increase of 211 mm over the five-seat version.

To ensure there's ample headroom in the third set of seats, the roofline has been lengthened and re-profiled at the rear of the vehicle, adding 38 mm to the overall height and taking it to 1,643 mm. Headroom in the front and middle row of seats has increased by 16 mm and 10 mm respectively, while knee room in the middle row has improved by 23 mm.

At the same time, both front and rear doors have been restyled: the window frames of the front door are squarer in line with the re-profiled roofline, while the rear pair are completely new - longer and also with squarer window frames.

Other styling changes include larger side windows at the rear of the vehicle to provide a light and airy environment for occupants of the third row of seats. Further differentiation between five and seven-seat versions is provided by a new tailgate with a deeper rear window and revised bumper profile at the rear and a sleek new grille, exclusive to Qashqai+2, at the front.

Another exterior feature found as standard on Qashqai+2 is a huge panoramic glass roof to give the same light, airy feeling that is so popular with customers on the existing Qashqai. The fixed roof is 140 mm longer than the equivalent sunroof offered on Qashqai and has a one-touch electric operated sunshade.

Additionally, Qashqai+2 has roof rails as standard adding a premium feel to its silhouette, while darkened privacy glass for all windows behind the front doors is standard on all versions.

Styling aside, the nature of the new model means much of the engineering and development work has been concentrated on the rear of the car where the aim has been to make it as flexible, practical and convenient as possible for passengers.

Lengthening the rear doors has improved ingress to the passenger compartment while access to the rearmost pair of seats is further eased by revisions to the middle bench. As well as having a folding backrest, the bench now slides fore and aft to provide walk-in access to the back row.

As well as moving through a total of 100 mm, the middle bench seat now has a three way folding operation on a 40/20/40 split for added modularity. The five-seat version splits on a 60/40 basis. The backrest also reclines and has no fewer than nine adjustment positions over a range from 10 deg to 25 deg of inclination.

The centre '20' portion doubles as a seat or a generously wide multi-function armrest. When used as an armrest, as well as providing a greater feeling of spaciousness for those in the third row, the seat back incorporates two cupholders and a lidded storage box large enough to hold personal music players, games consoles and CDs. It also has an integrated power outlet. When upright, the box becomes a storage recess for those in the rearmost seats.

THREE ROW VERSATILITY
The third row of seats is ingeniously practical. Designed for children or as occasional seats for small adults up to about 1.6m tall, the angle of the backrest has seven adjustment settings and can, of course, be folded completely flat to increase luggage space. The seats split on a 50/50 basis and each can be folded away simply by pulling on a single strap: there is no need to remove head restraints first.

The addition of a third row of seats allows families the option of transforming their Qashqai+2 into a spacious family car into the 'kids bus', for those busy days out playing sport or weekends away which can be a logistical nightmare for parents, worried about whether the family, kids and their friends, as well as all their baggage will fit.

When folded away, there's a large flat loading area left behind which provides almost 500 litres of potential luggage capacity, an increase of 90 litres over Qashqai. The new rear door and revised interior panels mean the loading height has been reduced by 13 mm to 770 mm while, at 1186 mm, the opening width is a remarkable 224 mm wider.

Unlike many seven-seat vehicles, Qashqai+2 has a full depth roller-blind style tonneau cover. With the rearmost seats folded it can be used conventionally but if the third set of seats are to be occupied, it can be removed and stowed in a special compartment under the boot floor. Like the extra pair of seats, therefore, the tonneau can remain in the vehicle at all times.

The lid of the underfloor stowage area, meanwhile, can also double as a cargo divider so fragile shopping - eggs or bottles for example - can be safely loaded where it won't be damaged by heavier items. The load area is set off by a stylish stainless steel kick plate which offers protection to the leading edge of the boot floor when loading heavy items.

RIDE & HANDLING
Mechanically, Qashqai+2 follows the lead set by the original model. That means a stretched version of Nissan's C-platform featuring strut-type front suspension with combined coil-over-strut assemblies and a forward lower link. The suspension assembly is mounted on a subframe which is attached to the body via compliant rubber bushes to isolate road noise and vibration from the platform, improving both refinement and ride comfort. A front anti-roll bar is attached directly to the strut assembly for more effective control of body roll under cornering.

A fully independent multi-link rear suspension has been used for precise handling and high-speed stability. Attached to the vehicle via a rigid rear subframe to keep unwanted noise and vibrations to a minimum, the compact assembly features an aluminium rear upper link to reduce weight: the saving is in the region of 4 kg.

The extra length and equipment found in Qashqai+2 has raised the overall weight of the vehicle by approximately 100 kg. Suspension settings have been revised to take account of the extra weight, while steering assistance - all Qashqai models use electric power steering - has also been retuned.

ALL-MODE SAFETY
Two versions of the chassis are available, offering the choice of front-wheel drive or sophisticated ALL-MODE four-wheel drive.

Developed by Nissan, the ALL-MODE system - which is available on 2.0-litre diesel and petrol models - allows secure and relaxed driving with advanced electronics taking care of all traction needs, ensuring that Qashqai+2 has grip at all times no matter how severe the conditions. Unlike some other automatic four-wheel drive systems, ALL-MODE uses advanced electronics rather than hydraulic pumps to ensure drive is transferred between wheels and axles the instant the need arises.

Under normal conditions, Qashqai+2 operates in front-wheel drive which reduces energy losses and saves on fuel. The instant wheel slippage is detected however, a centre clutch in the rear final drive is electronically activated and drive is correctly apportioned between front and rear axles.

The system has three modes, selected via a switch on the centre console. In two-wheel drive mode, the system is permanently set in front-wheel drive, ideal for fine weather on-road use. When the Lock setting is pushed, however, the system switches to permanent four-wheel drive mode with drive split 57:43 front to rear.

The most practical mode, however, is 'select-and-forget' Auto, in which the system is left to its own devices. Sensors linking the engine's ECU with the four-wheel drive and ABS controller constantly monitor wheel slippage and automatically send signals to the electromagnetic centre clutch mounted just ahead of the rear axle to apportion torque correctly.

Left in Auto, the system will automatically compensate for unexpected slippery conditions on-road, such as wet leaves in autumn, early morning winter ice or loose gravel at any time of the year.

ALL-MODE is inextricably linked to Bosch's eighth generation Electronic Stability Programme (ESP). Using sensors linked to the brakes, steering, wheels and the body itself, ESP constantly monitors the way the car is being driven.

In its customer research, Nissan found clearly that existing Qashqai owners who have opted for the ALL-MODE versions enjoy the feeling of confidence and security that the discreet, unobtrusive all-wheel drive system gives them when driving in marginal conditions.

Given its family orientation, customers will appreciate the availability of ALL-MODE on Qashqai+2 thanks to the reassurance it will offer in almost all road conditions that the driver and occupants are likely to find themselves in.

From the steering angle and wheel speeds, ESP calculates what manoeuvres the driver intends to perform and from signals from the yaw-rate and lateral acceleration sensors ESP recognises whether the vehicle might skid off course. In an emergency ESP reacts swiftly, and by selectively applying the brakes at each wheel ESP 'steers' the vehicle in the desired direction.

Qashqai+2 has other electronic control systems, including cornering brake control (CBC) and enhanced understeer control (EUC) in which the system applies the brakes to all four wheels to reduce excessive understeer. Hydraulic fade compensation (HFC) prevents brake fade after a period of heavy brake usage.

The braking system is essentially unchanged from Qashqai, though the adoption of standard 17-inch alloy wheels on 2.0-litre versions has permitted the fitment of larger rear brakes.

THE RUNNING GEAR
Qashqai+2 offers a choice of two petrol and two diesel versions. The entry-level petrol is a lightweight all-aluminium unit displacing 1598 cc, developing 115 PS (84 kW) and 160 Nm of torque. It has four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, multi-point port injection and vane-type continuous intake cam phasing.

Top of the petrol range is another all-aluminium 16-valve design, this one displacing 1997 cc and developing 140 PS (103 kW) and 200 Nm of torque. Some 90 per cent of that torque is available from 2000 rpm providing the accelerative 'punch' more usually expected in larger engines.

Almost as compact as the 1.6 engine, among its key design features is a notable reduction in internal friction. A mirror-like finishing technique is applied to the surfaces of the crankshaft pin journal and the cam lobe journal and to a new machining method that ensures truly circular bores is used: this procedure is common practice in the machining of bores of racing engines but is seldom used in volume production engines.

The entry-level diesel uses the most powerful version of Alliance partner Renault's acclaimed 1.5 dCi (K9K) engine developing 106 PS (78 kW) and 240Nm of torque. A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is also fitted as standard. Praised for its fuel efficiency and low noise, it features a flexible flywheel to filter out the effects of acyclic movements. Specifically developed to comply with Euro 4 legislation the engine has a lowered compression ratio (16:1) and a variable geometry, multi-blade turbocharger.

The 2.0 dCi is equipped with a Bosch piezoelectric-controlled injection system to develop 150 PS (110 kW) and 320 Nm of torque. Piezoelectric technology gives fast, very precise control allowing a 'five squirt' injection cycle: two pre-squirts, one main squirt and two post-squirts.

The pre-squirts improve engine acoustics by minimising the characteristic diesel clatter. The post-squirts sustain the main injection combustion, to burn off soot and thus bring down pollutant emissions before the exhaust gases have even left the combustion chamber.

Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) produces a controlled temperature rise in the combustion chamber to reduce pollutant emission levels (NOx) and thus enhance the engine's overall environment performance. The 2.0-litre diesel engine is also equipped as standard with a DPF.

Transmission options include a five-speed manual (1.6-litre petrol), six-speed manual (2.0 petrol and both diesels), six-speed automatic (4WD 2.0 dCi) and, uniquely in its class, a highly efficient CVT transmission option on the 4WD 2.0-litre petrol offering a choice between 'stepless' changes or a manual over-ride with six fixed ratios.

EQUIPMENT
Following the lead set by Qashqai, the new family version is available in three different trim and equipment versions - the now familiar Visia, Acenta and Tekna levels.

Depending on the version, standard equipment includes automatic lighting, automatic wipers, speed sensitive door locking, cruise control, privacy glass, electric windows, parking sensors, 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels and Nissan's Intelligent Key. Manual or automatic air conditioning incorporates mild flow ventilation while to provide sufficient airflow for the rearmost passengers, a larger compressor is fitted.

Subtle interior mood lighting is available, while all models benefit from ample storage opportunities, including an under seat drawer, large glovebox and door pockets. Also standard are the full-length panoramic glass roof and roof rails.

All audio systems - a single disc CD/radio, an in-dash six disc changer/radio or a full navigation system with in-dash six disc CD autochanger - incorporate Bluetooth hands-free mobile phone integration allowing remote operation of the phone and caller ID display. The audio system also has a standard auxiliary input connection for MP3 players and other external audio devices.

Qashqai+2 is equipped with six airbags (front, side and curtain), seat belt pretensioners in the front and active headrests.

Popular options include embossed leather trim and the advanced satellite navigation system incorporating a seven-inch full colour display (which doubles as the display for the rear parking camera) and voice recognition.

"Qashqai+2 adds a new dimension to the range and makes it even more versatile than the original. It will appeal not just to larger families, but also to anyone who appreciates its distinctive looks and commanding seating position as well as its extra space and flexibility," says Pierre Loing, Vice President, Product Planning, Nissan Europe.

"While some sales will come from current or potential Qashqai owners, we are confident the majority will be conquest sales from owners currently stuck with a conventional compact MPV: they appreciate the style and dynamism of the original Qashqai but need the extra seats of an MPV... no matter how dull it might be. With Qashqai+2 they can now have the best of both worlds."

<![CDATA[ Ouch: Many Minivans, SUVs, CUVs And Pickups Have Lousy Headrests ]]>

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety performed a battery of tests on new SUVs and determined that in 20-mph crashes the following vehicles performed poorly in the area of neck restraint:

BMW X3 and X5; Buick Rainier, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Isuzu Ascender; Cadillac SRX; Chrysler Pacifica; Dodge Nitro; Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer; Mitsubishi Endeavor; Hummer H3; Hyundai Tucson; Jeep Liberty; Kia Sportage; Lexus GX470 and RX; Nissan Xterra; Saab 9-7X; Suzuki XL7; Toyota 4Runner and Highlander.
According to the IIHS, headrest failings lead to two million claims per year at an annual cost of $8.5 billion. Considering these types of vehicles are often heavy, clumsy and have more blind spots than Stevie Wonder's Synclavier, 20 mph collisions are common. All is not lost however; jump for the mixed news.

The following big boys all performed well on the neck test:

Acura MDX and RDX; Lincoln MKX, Ford Edge and Ford Freestyle; Honda CR-V, Element and Pilot; Hyundai Santa Fe; Jeep Grand Cherokee; Kia Sorento; Land Rover LR3; Mercedes M Class; Mitsubishi Outlander; Subaru B9 Tribeca and Forester, and Volvo XC90.
If trucks are your thing, we're sorry but all these were rated poorly:
Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Classic and the GMC Sierra 1500 Classic; Dodge Ram 1500; Ford Ranger and Mazda B Series; Nissan Frontier and certain versions of Ford F-150, Dodge Dakota and Mitsubishi Raider.
The only good truck of the bunch is the Toyota Tundra. Minivans are dangerous too, as all of these faired poorly:
Buick Terraza, Chevrolet Uplander and Saturn Relay; some versions of the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Caravan; and the Toyota Sienna.
As the Institutes's vice president David Zuby explains, "It's not a major feat of engineering to design seats and head restraints that afford good protection in these common crashes." For the record, we're with him. Carmakers, think of the children!

<![CDATA[ This Is Our Country, This Is Our Chevy Crossover ]]> Chevy's kind of been the odd man out in the game of Lambda-platform musical chairs. With Saturn, Buick and even GMC getting into the crossover game with the newest Car-UV frame it seems like the brand name that's all about bringing value to the people doesn't yet have a seat in GM's people carrier. According to the Detroit News though, that's all about to change. Supposedly they'll be the newest recipient of the not-as-big-as-a-truck platform and it'll be getting the name...Traverse. Oh...boy. The...excitement...is...so...yawn...unbelievable. In case you've forgotten what this new-for-2010 might look like post-platform prostitution, take a gander at the galleries below.

Rabbi Dave over at their blog, Kicking Tires, got a chance to whip one around for a bit, so until we get a chance in the driver seat, they're the best you're gonna get. Yeah, it ain't much, but like we said — it's the best we can get as of yet of Saturn's newly redesigned Car-UV. <![CDATA[ Focus Group Fever: What's Next for the Infiniti FX? ]]>

According to one self-stated attendee of an Infiniti focus group, posting on GM Inside News, Nissan's luxe brand has been busy on its upgrade path for the FX crossover. Although the current design's freshness date isn't quite up (at the moment), the company apparently has a more powerful, svelte and athletic FX in the works.

Whereas the current FX has a tall front grill, the front of this car appeared much thinner. It was almost like the front of a sports car had been stuck onto the FX. The front was the biggest change and I'm not sold on it yet ... The FX37 gets bumped up to 300 horsepower. The FX50 comes with 390 horsepower and 369 lb.ft of torque. This sold me more than anything. I would guess that if the weight doesn't change that much, this thing must be quick.

Other presentations at the group reportedly included smart cruise control and mirrors that adjust automatically based on seating position. But more important, the group-goer says Nissan also gave a demo of its Around View blind-spot abatement system that will debut on its EX concept crossover at the New York auto show.

There were cameras in front of the car and behind it. On your Nav screen, it would show an outline of the car (as if looking down from the sky) and would paste the images around the car, so you'd have an almost 360 degree view of what was around you.

That's fairly rad. We still don't get how that'll work on a flat nav screen (we're picturing an optional set of 3D goggles), but we'll know more in New York next week.

<![CDATA[ New York Auto Show Preview: Hyundai Genesis Concept -- Now With Pictures! ]]> First we had the pretty drawings of Hyundai's new concept sedan, the Genesis, but now we've got the pictures. The concept Car-UV will be revealed for all to see next week at the New York Auto Show, but for now, the details we've got in hand come to us from the press release we've dropped in below the jump. The gist of it is that it appears the Genesis will be a rear-wheel drive car-platform powered by the newly developed Tau DOHC 32-valve V8 powertrain and we should expect to see it in some form as part of the Hyundai lineup in 2008. Oh, and expect a 0-60 time under six seconds.

Rear-Wheel Drive and V-8 Engine Promise World Class Dynamics and Refinement

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., March 26 /PRNewswire/ — Hyundai will present the world debut of Concept Genesis during a press conference at the New York International Auto Show on April 4. The concept car heralds the future architecture and design of a rear-wheel drive premium sports sedan scheduled to grace the Hyundai lineup in 2008.

"Concept Genesis extends our product range into new territories from a performance, design and packaging perspective," said Steve Wilhite, chief operating officer, Hyundai Motor America. "When it arrives in 2008 it will catapult Hyundai into competition against some potent rivals, and Genesis is up for the challenge."

Concept Genesis rides on a prototype of Hyundai's all-new rear-wheel drive platform, signaling the brand's desire to broaden its appeal to discerning driving enthusiasts. Concept Genesis is powered by Hyundai's newly developed Tau DOHC 32-valve V-8 powertrain. Concept Genesis marks the beginning of premium performance for the Hyundai brand.

"Concept Genesis is a manifestation of Hyundai's extraordinary desire to deliver world-class products across all model segments," said John Krafcik, vice president, Product Development and Strategic Planning, Hyundai Motor America. "With Genesis, we've got a unique product position — an all-new, highly capable, rear-wheel drive platform; a high-performance powertrain; and premium, progressive design — all at a price starting well under $30,000."

NEW REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE ARCHITECTURE IS A FIRST FOR THE U.S.

Concept Genesis features a rear-wheel-drive architecture, its first application in a U.S. Hyundai model. Rear-wheel drive provides a 53:47 front/rear weight distribution for optimal handling as well as more refined steering characteristics. Concept Genesis' premium handling and steering performance is further controlled by Electronic Stability Control (ESC), the industry's most important new safety technology. Hyundai leads all popular car brands in the standard application of ESC, with more than 70 percent of 2007 Hyundai sales volume featuring this life-saving technology as standard equipment. ESC continually analyzes road speed, steering input, throttle position, lateral yaw rate and other factors. An onboard microprocessor determines if the vehicle is starting to understeer or oversteer, and can brake appropriate wheels and reduce engine power to keep the vehicle safely on course.

Utilizing ultra high-tensile steel in critical areas in the unibody provides Concept Genesis with a 12-14 percent higher dynamic torsional rigidity and a lower body-in-white weight than the BMW 5-series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. This stiffer, lighter, larger body provides a terrific foundation for world-class dynamics and lowering noise levels inside the vehicle.

TAU V-8 POWERTRAIN

Adding to the Concept Genesis' performance factor is the all-new Tau 4.6-liter V8 engine mated to a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC(R) manual control and a limited-slip differential. The Tau delivers well over 300 horsepower to fit the demands of performance-oriented consumers. This powertrain combination will launch Genesis to 60 miles per hour in well under six seconds. The Tau engine is built with flexibility for the future. Future Tau variants may offer larger displacement, forced induction options and other technology enhancements.

INNOVATIVE AND SOPHISTICATED SPORT-TUNED SUSPENSION

Genesis features a suspension design that is among the most sophisticated and refined anywhere, at any price. The front five-link suspension features upper and lower arms linking the front wheels to the chassis. This artfully articulated arrangement creates a virtual king pin axis which dramatically reduces unwanted kickback through the steering wheel as well as improving responsiveness. The five-link independent rear suspension is equally sophisticated, enabling precise suspension geometry for an incredible level of ride and handling prowess. The capabilities of the advanced front and rear-suspension are maximized through driver selectable dynamic settings allowing tailored ride and handling characteristics according to need ... or desire.

MODERN DESIGN

Genesis' design is a progressive interpretation of the modern rear-wheel drive sports sedan. To match its dynamic powertrain capabilities, Genesis combines strong, sculpted forms which integrate precise details, natural materials and innovative lighting to provide a well-crafted, premium design aesthetic.

SAFETY FEATURES

Maintaining Hyundai's emphasis on delivering leading safety technology, Concept Genesis boasts world class active and passive safety features to both prevent accidents, and maximize the well being of its occupants in the event of a collision. The Genesis continues the Hyundai tradition of standardizing key life-saving active safety technology such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with traction control, eight airbags and active headrests.

Concept Genesis is brought to a halt by large four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). The 12.6-inch front rotors have single-piston floating calipers and the rear brakes feature 12.4-inch rotors with single-pistons.

Hyundai Motor America, headquartered in Fountain Valley, Calif., is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Co. of Korea. Hyundai vehicles are distributed throughout the United States by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced through more than 750 dealerships nationwide.

<![CDATA[ Flex Your Minivan Muscle, Ford! ]]> There are two contradictory reports out of FoMoCo today on the minivan replacement in the blue oval's lineup. Everyone appears to be in agreement that it'll be called the Flex rather than the Fairlane, its conceptual name. And that's good because whenever we think "Fairlane" we think "Adventures of," and that's no good thing if Ford wants families to be buying this thing. But we digress. The contradiction appears to be on something wholly more important — what the doors will look like. We kid you not, there are two contradictory reports, one from John Stoll of Dow Jones who claims

"The Flex carries three rows of seats and unique side doors that open from the middle - in opposite directions, much like French doors do - and are intended to be a modern alternative to the sliding door popularized by the minivan."
Sounds pretty cool if you ask us, but although Stoll's known for scoop, there's a bigger dog in the game of breaking news out of FoMoCo — and that's Bryce Hoffman from the Detroit News. If there's one man who's got the investigative skills to pay the bills, it'd be Bryce. He's the only reporter...

...at the News with any kind of sources in Dearborn, and his editors are said to kow-tow regularly to his investigative wiles. And so what's Bryce saying? He's claiming the Flex

"...will not offer the unique clamshell side doors featured on the prototype."
Sorry John, we want to believe your claims of a clam-shell door design, but we can't argue against Bryce's unparalleled connections in Dearborn. He's got connections so strong they make Ray Day and his minions in the Glass House literally helpless to defend themselves. He makes the PR leadership over there look hapless and ineffective. He's just that good. Sorry John, but despite your obvious skills in the biz, you'll never be half the muckraker of Bryce.

Somewhere in Europe, there's a buyer waiting for a high-roof Ford Focus that can trudge through snow like a mini Unimog, while hauling the kids, pets and groceries home from Sainsbury's. Soon, they'll be able to take delivery. Ford's been working on this Focus C-Max allroad for a while, as spy shots have testified. Now, according to Autocar, the four-by MPV is just about a year away. And the soft-roader will reportedly have better on-road manners than goat-trail skills. And that's about as expected.

<![CDATA[ To CUV Or Not To CUV, Part 1 ]]>

That really is the question for soccer moms car buyers these days. Frankly, I don't have much experience driving the new car-platformed CUV's, leastwise on pavement and in inclement weather. But as an SUV owner, why would I want to? Having actually taken my four-wheel drive "cute bug" (ask Jonny Lieberman) off-road a few times, my level of confidence translates to on-road driving in lousy conditions. But then, I'm not the CUV's target market. Nonetheless, automakers are falling all over themselves to prove these new Car-UV's (like the General's trio of Lambda-platform vehicles, the Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia and the Buick Enclave and Nissan's new Rogue) are not only capable in the wet, white wintry stuff, but can do it with without causing a chronic brain rattle. Sensing an opportunity, I thought I'd give it a test by taking the newest jellybean-ness from FoMoCo out for a spin. Sure, I could be hill-climbing in San Francisco, tailgating in Texas or clawing at the desert scrub of New Mexico, places where automakers traditionally show off their most steroided-up new models. But I won't. Instead, I'll be taking a Lincoln MKX to where it's most likely to see action — the highways and byways of this great nation. And I'll be doing it in the middle of the winter. In the middle of a snow and ice storm bearing down on the midwest and east coast. And I'll be traveling from the slippery speedways of Michigan to the fish-school streets of New York City. Sound like a great way to potentially get myself killed? Absolutely. Sound like fun? You bet. With that, here's my diary of the trip:

0.0 Miles
8:40 AM
I'm on my way from Royal Oak, and every air-exposed surface is covered with a thin sheet of ice. Then, as if to hide itself, Mother Nature's decided to top off that ice with a light dusting of snow that just helps to disguise the injurious potential of the slickness below. Yup, the storm, travelling at roughly 45 mph, has already passed here so things look craptastically icy out there. Perfect — let's roll.

1.6 miles
8:46 AM
I just glimpsed my first (of what will more than likely be many) accident of the day at 696 just before the Woodward Avenue off-ramp. Two SUV's of an indeterminate make, model and year. Lucky for any potentially injured occupants, although the police do not appear to have arrived yet, Fox 2 news is on the scene cameras in hand. I'm sure they're there to give them comfort until real help arrives.

6.0 miles
8:51 AM
And now I'm passing my second accident. It's a later-model Suburban and a VW Golf. Looks like the Suburban took the brunt of the impact via the wall. Unlike the previous incident, the overworked State Police are on the scene. I slow down as I watch their cherry-top lights spinning, their bright red glare dancing across the icy highway as I trudge by. As I begin to speed back up, I feel the front wheels spin a bit, and then almost simultaneously, I feel and hear the ca-chigga-chigga-chigga of the AWD kick in for the first time. I feel the rear tires burst into a mini-sprint, kicking the MKX forward, and moving me along my way.

64.5 miles
9:43 AM
I'm now crossing over into Ohio, leaving behind Michigan's highway speed corridors for the modicum of "safety" provided by helicopter-enforced 65 mph speed limits. Yay. Looking on the bright side, I'm finally going to be able to see what the fuel economy's really like in something other than Michigan's Formula-One-like interstate system.

108.3 miles
10:36 AM
Stopped at a turnpike off-ramp in a location the nav system calls "Unknown, Ohio." I won't dispute that. Although the Lincoln doesn't yet need any fuel, I do need some as I skipped breakfast in my rush out the door. I know I probably won't be stopping often, so I fill up with an Einstein bagel and a Starbucks coffee. Mmm, turkey sausage, cheddar and omelet on a potato bagel. Delicious.

265.2 miles
12:58 PM
Just made it into Pennsylvania without any real incidents, but I know the "Pennsylvania Wilds" are where I'll probably hit the worst of the storm. Now that we've got about 150 miles on the vehicle at "normal highway driving speeds," I can say unequivocally I'm going to hate going back to my gas-guzzler of an SUV just because of what it's going to do to my wallet. I'm getting 21.9 MPG. While not amazing, given the base Lincoln MKX AWD weighs in at a hefty 4420 lbs (and this pimped-out version's nav system and the power rear seats alone add 172 lbs more onto that number) it's not bad. I'd actually love to see what the more-svelte Lexus RX 350 or BMW X3 would garner — although with both of those luxe CUV's, it's suggested I should fill up with premium, so there's added costs associated with that.

305.9 miles
1:36 PM
Stopping for gas in the Pennsylvania Wilds in the sleepy little township of Monroe, I've seen my fuel economy drop in the rolling hills to 19.6 mpg. But that's forgotten when I enter the restroom at the local McDonald's while I wait for the 20-gallon tank to fill up with the regular stuff. I'm greeted by Christian rock playing over the intercom at the urinal. Yup, although the 3.5-liter V6 has become a bit less efficient out here in the "Wilds," at least I know Jesus loves me.

305.9 miles
1:59 PM
Felling "saved," I'm back on I-80 heading again toward New York. I know I'm getting ready to hit the storm front even before I flip on the weather channel on Sirius, just because of the dark and gloomy clouds I'm seeing in front of me. Excellent.

319.1 miles
2:06 PM
With The Who's "Baba O'Riley" playing on channel 29, I'm approaching 80 mph to catch up with the storm in the hills. I feel comfortable at this speed because I know all about Pennsylvania's recent round of budget cuts eschewing increases in State Police funding in favor of yellow signs that say things like "Buckle Up, It's The Law" and "Slow Down, Save A Life." They should have just put up a sign that says "Pennsylvania: Where We Need Yellow Signs To State The Obvious."

378.9 miles
2:59 PM
Temperature's dropped to 28 degrees, so the rain that's been falling here in PA is turning into a thin sheet of glass-like ice or "clear ice" as I've been known to call it...mostly because I believe "black ice" is such a misnomer when you're on concrete pavement. Whatever you want to call it, it's twice caused the front end to slip a bit as I hit the accelerator. But, each time I feel the front end start to lose control, just as quickly, I feel the rear end firmly kick me in the right direction. Oh, and I've lost track of the number of accidents I've passed. This is really fun stuff to be driving in. Why am I doing this again?

Lincoln-MKX-CUV-Ice.jpg

543.5 miles
5:42 PM
It's been a couple of hours since my last update — mostly because I've been too busy worrying about the road ahead of me than I have been in keeping track of silly things like how many police cars I've seen behind accident scenes. But now I feel comfortable taking a deep breath and writing. Of course, that's mostly because I'm now in the Poconos stopped and gassing up with the wind whipping around the car. I'm getting 22.3 mpg right now, mostly because I've been traveling between 55 and 60 mph. That's the MKX's radio antenna above, just to give you an idea of how much ice-rain was coating the roads. But I know I've got another 80 miles or so to New York...

<![CDATA[ Pricing! Buick Enclave Breaks Out Of The Woods, Starts At $32,790 ]]>

Lost amid important things like t-shirt slogans and a certain car exec's hairdo, we kind of missed the completion of the General's Lambda-platform trilogy. Rick Wagoner's blue-haired Buick brand has now allowed pricing on the Outlook Acadia Enclave to run free out of the Woods. The CX, the base-level FWD version of the Buick Enclave, will hit showroom floors at the jaw-dropping price of $32,790, with the AWD model of the base-level coming in at $34,790. Now if you want some options on that CUV, the de-luxe model, the CXL, will come in at a $34,990 with FWD and the AWD starting at $36,990. That's nearly $3,000 more than the Acadia, its Lambda-platformed cousin at GMC and nearly $5,000 more than its platform-prostitute cousin, the Saturn Outlook. Considering all three start off with the same 275-hp 3.6L VVT'ed V6 what could provide for the huge price discrepancy? Oh wait, here it is — a "Tiffany-style analog clock", a "leather-wrapped, genuine Mahogany wood steering wheel," and the ability to have Tiger Woods answer your calls to OnStar. Sweet. Gallery below and full press release after the jump.

Buick Announces Pricing For All-New Enclave Luxury Crossover SUV

DETROIT - When the all-new 2008 Buick Enclave luxury crossover sport utility vehicle arrives in dealerships early this summer, it will come equipped with a long list of standard equipment, a suite of owner services and a price unmatched in the segment.

The front-wheel-drive Enclave CX starts at $32,790, while the all-wheel-drive model starts at $34,790. The front-wheel-drive Enclave CXL begins at $34,990, while the all-wheel-drive version starts at $36,990. Prices include a $735 destination charge.

"Enclave is a segment-busting luxury crossover that best defines the new face of Buick," said Steve Shannon, Buick general manager. "Its gorgeous design, high-tech features, functionality and roominess, coupled with a quiet and refined ride, put us in a great position to attract new customers."

Loaded with standard equipment

Buick's first luxury crossover SUV is equipped with a long list of standard equipment and technologies that are uncommon for vehicles at Enclave's introductory price.

A new, 275-horsepower 3.6L V-6 powertrain featuring variable valve timing (VVT) powers the Enclave. The sophisticated dual-overhead camshaft engine is mated to Buick's first six-speed automatic transmission.

Enclave offers a spacious cabin, with a standard seven-passenger seating configuration, second-row Smart Slide captain's chairs and a third-row seat that can accommodate three adults. With Smart Slide, occupants have quick and effortless access to Enclave's third row.

Other standard features include:

* Xenon high-intensity discharge headlamps with automatic headlamp control
* Heated, power outside mirrors with integrated turn signals
* Power rear liftgate with remote
* Leather-wrapped, genuine Mahogany wood steering wheel with tilt and telescoping steering column
* Variable-assist power steering
* AM/FM stereo with single-CD player, Radio Data System display, MP3 capability, six speakers and speed-compensated radio volume
* Tiffany-style analog clock
* Tri-zone automatic climate control
* Remote keyless entry
* XM Satellite Radio (includes three-month subscription)
* Dual chrome exhaust
* Reading lamps in all three rows

GM engineered the Enclave to be the quietest crossover on the road. Buick's standard QuietTuning initiative, an engineering approach to reduce, block and absorb unwanted noise from entering the interior cabin, yields a library-quiet drive experience for all passengers whether they are seated in the front or third row.

All Enclave models come equipped with six standard air bags, including dual-stage frontal air bags, roof rail head curtain air bags for all three seating rows, and thorax side air bags for first-row seats. Other standard safety features include four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with rollover mitigation technology, tire pressure monitoring system and traction control.

For added confidence and convenience, all Enclave models come standard with the industry's best coverage and a suite of owner services, including a four-year/50,000-mile vehicle warranty, a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, and OnStar with Turn-By-Turn voice-activated navigation and one-year Directions & Connections Plan.

Comprehensive features

A host of innovative features adds to the Enclave's standout position, including an adjustable front-row center console armrest with multiple storage capabilities, an optional second-row center storage console that unfolds to contribute to a flat load floor when the seats are folded (available late summer), a large storage area with an integrated well behind the third row, and third-row seat bolsters for added comfort. The seat bolsters deflate when folded to allow a flat load floor.

Optional equipment includes a second-row 60/40 split-folding bench seat for eight-passenger configuration, 18-inch machine-finish aluminum wheels on CX models and 19-inch chrome aluminum wheels on CXL models. A rear-seat DVD system, an in-dash voice activated navigation system with back-up camera; a large, power-operated sunroof with second-row skylight; a rear cargo net and shade; and a heavy-duty trailering package (up to 4,500 pounds maximum towing capacity) are available on all models.

A Driver Confidence Package is also available on all models and includes rear parking assist, remote starting capability and heated windshield washer fluid. Enclave CXL buyers can select the Luxury Package, which adds articulating front headlamps, power tilt and telescoping steering wheel and power folding outside mirrors. Four optional audio and entertainment packages, eight exterior and three interior colors are also available.

The 2008 Buick Enclave will be built at GM's new Lansing Delta Township assembly in Lansing, Mich.

The automotive power-towers scattered across the Metro Detroit region are filled with people whose only job is to make people think sky-blue-pink thoughts about the vehicles sold by their company. These people — are people who need people to love them, and although they're known by different names at each company, their job is one and the same — to be public relations professionals. So, on a semi-regular basis we'll spend some time with these overpaid underworked overstressed PR pros in order to mock everything they hold dear talk with them and learn about their social lives products. In this, the first of what will hopefully be a plethora of episodes, we're talking with FoMoCo PR staffer Whitney Drake about Ford's "flagship," the Edge. While fending off the local yokels walking between us and the camera we'll ask her all sorts of penetrating questions about her job, her likes, her dislikes and whether she lives life on the edge. If, after the fluff stuff is done and there's time, we may even get around to asking her about FoMoCo's newest pumpkin CUV.

<![CDATA[ Ad Watch: Living On The Ford Edge Of Buildings ]]>

There's somethin' wrong with the world today I don't know what it is Something's wrong with our eyes

We're seeing things in a different way
And God knows it ain't His
It sure ain't no surprise

We're livin' on the edge
—Aerosmith, Living on the Edge

No, the new commercial for FoMoCo's "Hi, I'm Dave" front-ended Edge doesn't star Steven Tyler, Aerosmith or their Alicia Silverstone-starring music video. But, after the campaign for FoMoCo's Edge-led turnaround effort engages in the planned "advertising takeovers" of popular websites during this campaign it'll be everywhere you look. So, let's be the first to introduce you to the new commercial, created by the masterminds of "Bold Moves" — J. Walter Thompson (JWT) Detroit. The ad features the 4,000-lb Edge driving along the "edge" of buildings, moving through the air with the greatest of ease. In fact, it's with so much ease, they felt it necessary to drop in the warning we've helpfully provided below the jump:

"Yes, this is a fantasy. Vehicles can't really drive on buildings."

Hmm — seems to me they couldn't figure out what to classify the Edge as either. It's a "vehicle?" Come on, work with us here — is it a minivan, is it a wagon, is it a CUV? Wait, no — the ad agency knows what it is —it's a "vehicle" — just like a semi-truck and a tank. All we know is the ad for whatever the hell this thing is classified as ain't too shabby.

<![CDATA[ Spy Photos: No-Name Dodge Crossover ]]> Dodge-JC49-Crossover-Spy-Photo.jpgThe shooters at KGP have snapped shots of a crossover vehicle we've heard is code-named JC49 — it's a vehicle which will supposedly be built on the frame of the new Sebring/Avenger platform. Where what we've heard has diverged from what others are saying is on what market the new CUV (plus its potential Chrysler-branded cousin, which apparently has a similarly alphanumeric name — the JZ49) is heading for. The people at the ever-curvaceous Road claim it's meant to fight off the Toyota Highlander and Ford Edge on these shores — but we've heard it's to be built out of the Toluca, Mexico plant that's currently building PT Cruisers, and that it's meant to fight MPV's from a broad-range of competitors across the pond in Europe. It may be part of the Chrysler Group's plans to fight them over there while making cars that aren't selling over here — or something like that.

<![CDATA[ GM's Momentum Maintenance: More On The Lambda Platform "Stop Sale" ]]> Traffic-Light-Red-And-Green.jpgI just got off of the phone with a PR staffer from the General, who provided me with a little bit more detail, but by no means the full story, on the General's decision to put a "stop sale" on the GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook. According to Lynda Messina, the PR-anista in charge of manufacturing issues for GM's lambda-platformed crossover triplets, the "stop sale" occurred because "a couple of issues cropped up over the past few days...in a test fleet of vehicles." She also claimed the issues are "not safety-related" and "to our knowledge no one has received a vehicle yet...they are only on dealer lots...but I've no idea when they'll be able to start selling." Messina wasn't able to provide any detail on what the specific issues were, but we're told we'll have more information from the General when they see fit to provide it. One assumes it must have been important enough to require them to "maintain momentum" via a halt to sales.

<![CDATA[ Breaking! GM Issues "Stop Sale" To Dealers On Saturn Outlook And GMC Acadia ]]> Dealers received an immediate stop-action communique over the weekend from the home office at the RenCen of the General's decision to immediately halt sales of the two models in its threesome of Lambda-platform CUV's already on the market, the GMC Acadia and the Saturn Outlook. The communique, which appears to have been so hastily written it misspells "Attention," claims the need to stop sales

"...in order to maintain our momentum and successful launch of these products, we are evaluating potential enhancement and inventory upgrade to the vehicles."
Because nothing says "maintaining momentum" like a complete halt. Full copy of the alert below the jump.

<![CDATA[ More Rides Yanks Can't Buy: Volkswagen's Twincharged CrossTouran ]]>

Sure, it looks like someone grafted a Jetta's snout onto a Mazda5. Yes, the "Red Rock" color-scheme being used in the promo-photos screams "Ford Edge!" louder than Alan Mulally. And no, we still do not know why VeeDub has simply refused to build the new Bus concept. However, the people who make the peoples' car will be producing a new crossover called the CrossTouran. In top form, the new European-person hauler features a highly-effing precise 1.4L Twincharger mill that uses a supercharger, a turbocharger and direct injection to kick out 170 horses and hit about 130mph. Based on the Touran van (another VW product the Great Satan don't get) the CrossTouran should go on sale elsewhere in Spring 2007. Euro-surfers rejoice. Also, "Cross" is a new VW brand, just like GTI and/or R. Beware the CrossPolo. Full press release after die jumpen.

The new CrossTouran - Central Aspects

Germany's most popular compact van in a new dynamic lifestyle look

Wolfsburg/Bologna, 03 December 2006 -

* CrossTouran appears as a sporty all-rounder
* 125 kW (170 hp) TSI Twincharger with DSG available for the first time
* SUV elements on the CrossTouran underscore the lifestyle character
* Exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels with differing width front and back lift the CrossTouran above the rest

Right before the turn of the year Volkswagen is presenting another member of the "Cross" family at the 30th Bologna Motor Show. The CrossTouran. After the start of the CrossPolo and the CrossGolf the crossover model of the successful compact van now complements the range of options. The strikingly styled, front-wheel drive Touran appears as a practical and lifestyle-oriented all-round talent. The new CrossTouran meets the demands for driving fun, a high level of product quality and an attractive price-performance ratio. For the European market launch in Spring 2007 the CrossTouran will be available with three gasoline-powered engines and three TDIs with output ranging from 75 (102 hp) to 125 kW (170 hp). The 125 kW (170 hp) TSI Twincharger with standard DSG is certainly a highlight.

EXTERIOR

Robust bumpers, wheel arches and side trim and more ground clearance

On the exterior numerous modifications distinguish the CrossTouran from the classical Touran design. The interplay of all body elements visible from the outside is particularly noticeable. The silver anodized roof railing with black mount harmonizes with the "matte chrome" look of the new front spoiler. The central air inlet in the front spoiler was also given a border in "matte chrome" look. All other body features of the all-around protection (bumper lower sections, side running boards, wheel arches, side protective trim) consist of robust, high-quality black-grained carbon fiber. The CrossTouran has lettering directly above the side trims. The wing mirror casings and the hatchback handle are painted to match the body color. All of this bestows it a completely independent character.

Fresh body colors available for the CrossTouran provide a harmonious contrast to the applications. The color palette ranges from "Candy White" to "Deep Black". The color "Red Rock" in particular underscores the unique character of the CrossTouran: It is a flexible all-rounder that conceptually shows true can-do qualities and at the same time makes a very positive statement about life.

One look at the silhouette also distinguishes the CrossTouran as a unique model. The mixed tire arrangement with 6.5-inch wide and 17-inch diameter alloy wheels on 215/50 tires in front and, in particular, the 8-inch wide alloy wheels on 235/45 tires in back underscore the road holding of the CrossTouran and competently fill out the wheel arches enclosed by the robust extensions. The extensions merge with the side running boards, which extend up into the doors and give the car an extremely solid and powerful character.

In order to gain the extra 12 millimeters of ground clearance the CrossTouran was equipped with a modified version of the rough-track chassis that is optional for this series: it also includes a longer suspension system. The silver anodized roof railing with black mount was however not included as a component of standard equipment for visual reasons only. It is in fact a classic way to anchor the mounting system and roof boxes. The maximum permissible load is 100 kilograms.

"Cross" is a unique product brand like "GTI" or "R"

The name "Cross" represents an independent product brand like "GTI" or "R" with a specific design as well as an equipment range specially developed for the CrossTouran. Features include the "Climatic" air-conditioning system, power windows in the front and back as well as height-adjustable comfort seats with lumbar support in front.

INTERIOR / LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT

A colorful design specially developed for the CrossTouran, and great functionality make everyday driving easier

With its functional design and especially with the "Orange/Grey" interior colors, the inside of the CrossTouran imparts a youthful and pleasant atmosphere. In particular, in conjunction with the exterior "Red Rock" color this orange-grey combination has a special charm. For those who prefer to be a bit less ostentatious the "Latte Macchiato" color scheme is the fitting counterpart.

The matching cover fabrics (Design: "Eclypt Elon") are not only used in the comfort seats in front and the back seats, but also in the door linings. The honeycomb structure incorporated into the seat flanks and upper rear part is something the observer notices right away. The seams of the three-spoke steering wheel covered in perforated leather are offset with lighter colored seams.

The practical individual seating system of the CrossTouran shows the way in terms of versatility. The three lightweight seats arranged next to one another in the second row can be quickly and easily moved - lengthwise and offset diagonally, folded down or removed. The CrossTouran can be optionally equipped with a third row of seats; if desired, the two full-fledged individual seats can each be easily lowered separately into the luggage compartment floor.

In terms of utilization, the CrossTouran is also extremely flexible when it comes to transporting luggage. In its basic configuration the luggage compartment is 695 liters. When necessary maximum storage volume can be expanded to 1,989 liters by removing the second row of seats and lowering the third row into the luggage compartment floor. Even bulky items or recreational equipment for the weekend pose no problem for the CrossTouran.

SAFETY

High stability passenger compartment and standard front, side and head airbags

The CrossTouran also makes no compromises in terms of safety. The laser-welded and, thanks to high tensile steel, especially rigid Touran body offers a high level of passive safety. The extensive standard safety equipment consisting of safety-optimized headrests in front and on the outer seats of the second row, driver and passenger airbag, side airbags in the front backrests and a head airbag system for the first and second row of seats in conjunction with three-point safety belts on all seats provide optimal occupant protection.

A high level of active safety is provided by the ESP electronic stabilization program including counter-steering feature and trailer stabilization as well as speed-regulated electro-mechanical power steering.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS

Six economical engines, two transmissions and a performance range from 75 to 125 kW

No matter if it's a basic economical engine, dynamic alternative or high-torque and thrifty TSI or TDI, the CrossTouran offers the right engine for every use and taste. All engines comply with the Euro 4 emissions standard.

GASOLINE ENGINES

CrossTouran 1.6 with 75 kW / 102 hp
The entry level is represented by the "smallest" Touran four-cylinder engine with 1.6 liters of engine space and an output of 75 kW / 102 hp. With the basic engine and five-speed manual transmission the CrossTouran is already 176 km/h fast and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.3 seconds. Fuel consumption is limited to 8.3 liters over 100 kilometers.

CrossTouran 1.4 TSI with 103 kW / 140 hp
The "small" Twincharger TSI deserves special attention. Thanks to twin charging via compressor and turbocharger it features an extremely high-torque and agile characteristic. Nevertheless, the engine is extraordinarily thrifty with 7.6 liters of fuel consumption over a distance of 100 kilometers. For those who like it extremely comfortable, the CrossTouran with this engine type can also be ordered with a DSG (direct shift gearbox).

CrossTouran 1.4 TSI with 125 kW / 170 hp
The most powerful direct injection gasoline engine has a sporty temperament and will be used for the first time in the CrossTouran. The gears of the Twincharger with 125 kW / 170 hp will be changed with a DSG direct shift gearbox as part of standard equipment. It also convinces with low fuel consumption with an overall average of 7.8 liters over 100 kilometers. With this engine the CrossTouran has a top speed of 208 km/h and accelerates to 100 km/h in just 8.7 seconds.

DIESEL ENGINES

CrossTouran 1.9 TDI with 77 kW / 105 hp
The 1.9 TDI with pump-jet direct injection technology and turbocharger has a standard six-gear transmission, but can also be combined with the innovative DSG direct shift gearbox. The engine accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 13.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 176 km/h (DSG: 174 km/h). With average fuel consumption of only 6.2 (DSG: 6.5) liters for 100 km it is also extra thrifty.

CrossTouran 2.0 TDI with 103 kW / 140 hp
The pump-jet four-cylinder direct injection of the 2.0 TDI attains a full 320 Nm of torque. In combination with the standard six-gear transmission it has a top speed of 196 km/h. The 140 hp TDI can be optionally equipped with direct shift gearbox. As a TDI DSG Germany's most popular compact van goes 194 km/h. It has average fuel consumption of only 6.2 (DSG: 6.8) liters over 100 km.

CrossTouran 2.0 TDI with 125 kW / 170 hp
The second 2.0 TDI provides superior driving performance: The engine is equipped with a highly innovative Piezo pump-jet high-pressure unit-injector system and two balancer shafts. This very quiet four-valve TDI has an output of 125 kW / 170 hp (4,200 rpm), developing torque of 350 Nm (1,750 to 2.500 rpm) and accelerating the CrossTouran to 100 km/h in only 9.2 seconds. Top speed is 210 km/h (208 km/h with DSG). Here too average fuel consumption is only 7 liters over 100 kilometers.

<![CDATA[ Breaking? GM Has Enough Problems, Will Not Save Ford...Did We Mention The Buick Enclave? ]]>

A non-Jalopnik member of the press asked Rabid Rick if instead of merging with Carlos "Hot Daughter" Ghosn's lineup, why doesn't GM simply merge with — and save — FoMoCo? Mr. Wagoner literally answered, "We have enough problems. We will not be saving Ford." The General does sound like it's intent on saving Buick. Brand Manager Steve Shannon reassured the assembled autojourno throngs that Buick will soon "be making real Buicks again." He went on to explain that instead of trying to put a car in every garage, they are going to only make four models. Also, instead of concentrating on rental cars fleet sales, Buick will focus on retail customers. Glad to hear they've at least claiming a focus.

tigerrick6.jpg

Oh, and there was something about a car — no wait, it's a crossover. While almost totally overshadowed by the world's best golfer, the new Enclave was introduced to us hard drinking press folks when none other than Tiger himself (with Rick riding shotgun) drove through a paper banner high school football style. And... it looks like a fish with chrome teeth. I will say that the interior was nicer than I had been led to believe. And by nicer I mean it looked and felt like an Infiniti. You know; blond plastic wood and softy plastics. Beyond that, it is hard to get a sense of an S0/S1 when all of its doors are wide open and stuffed with men in bad suits holding huge cameras.

While Mr. Woods was whisked out of the building by Special Forces and Mr. Wagoner was busy with the television folks, I did manage to wrangle some face time with Buick brand guru Shannon. As I'm kind of a snotty, incompetent jerk, I hadn't planned on asking him any tough questions. I mean, Tiger had already been quizzed about their handicaps. But when a TV crew cut us off mid handshake, Mr. Shannon insisted that I continue. So be it. "What's a real Buick?" "Are you planning a halo vehicle?" "You already share platforms with Saturn and Chevy, are you going to get a rear-wheel drive platform from Cadillac or Holden?" Turns out that the word "spin" is not just a cute nickname for Jalopnik's editor in chief. In my mind, much like the Enclave, Buick's future is a big — "maybe?"

ALL-NEW 2008 BUICK ENCLAVE REPRESENTS THE NEW FACE OF BUICK

LOS ANGELES - Tiger Woods, the world's top-ranked professional golfer and long-time Buick partner, teamed up with Buick to introduce media to the brand's newest vehicle: the all-new 2008 Enclave luxury crossover SUV, on the eve of the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Enclave was unveiled at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, one of the world's most prestigious art and design schools.

The Enclave is Buick's first luxury crossover SUV. It is purposely built on an all-new crossover architecture and motivated by one of GM's most powerful V-6 engines ever. The Enclave creates its own niche in the fast-growing crossover market by meld
