This one's got the V6 from a modern Saab 9-5.

The talk of Saab's postponed imminent demise got us to looking at old Saabs, especially after we wondered just how hard it would be for Jalopnik to buy the company and build some of the old-fashioned ultra-violence into the Swedish marque. On our meandering we found this awesome Swedish-built Saab 92 with a modern Saab V6 wedged in its nose. According to those in the know, when the owner came into ownership of the car, it was too far gone for a proper restoration, so instead of junking it, the guy swapped in all the mechanical bits from a wrecked 9-5, so it's got a V6 but we're not real clear on the engine here so all you Saab-o-philes out there, step up and ID this thing. With this new motor and an automatic transmission it's got a whole snout full of power that wasn't there before. The guy took the build a step further and integrated the flat center stack into the dash completing the retromod look. Leave it to a Swede to make the original Saab sing. <![CDATA[Customized JDM Honda Odyssey Does BMW Better Than 5 Series GT]]> We haven't exactly been coy about our opinion of the BMW 5 Series GT, it's questionably-necessary and lumpy. Such needn't be the case though as evidenced by this JDM Honda Odyssey modified with an E92 BMW 3-Series Coupe nose.

Ridiculous camber angles aside, VIP Styling, the tuner behind this concoction, has managed to make a better looking wagon/minivan than BMW's been able to produce between the 5 Series GT, X6, and X3. They've even got an interior which doesn't remind us of a space ship for the uppity technophile. Normally, we'd rant against a poseurmobile like this, but when they manage to make imitation the sincerest form of improvement, we can't really argue. [Jonsibal via Carscoop]

<![CDATA[1969 Camaro SS Turned Into 2010 Camaro SS]]> This 1969 Camaro SS was given an updated body kit styled to look like the 2010 Camaro SS concept, which itself was partially styled after the 1969 Camaro SS. Oh glorious, mulleted blasphemy!

The creator explains exactly how this unique-for-a-reason piece of kit came together:

"This is a 1969 Danz Camaro SS concept car. I built the car in 2006. In 2006 the new Camaro was just a concept with no definite plans to go to production. I took a real 1969 Camaro and modified it to look somewhat like the 2006 concept Camaro.
Thinking that I would have the only one in the world if the Camaro never went to production. I combined the original 69 Camaro design with the 2006 concept Camaro design, with my own designs. Especially the hood scoop and rear spoiler design are my own. I gave GM pictures of my car in Jan 2007.
It appears that the 2010 SLP Camaro has a simular designed hood scoop and rear spoiler to my car. To power my car I went with a 427 small block with the vintage dual 4-barrel crossram manifold and carbs. I went in that direction because I wanted the legendary 427 cubic inch and also to use the vintage dual 4-barrel crossram. Backed with a 700 r transmission to a Ford 9" differential. <![CDATA[Custom ’59 Cadillacamino Costs $27,000, Won’t Fit in a Single Picture]]> They say what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. Well that's not always the case, and today, Nice Price or Crack Pipe has a Vegas-based custom Caddy that's big enough to bring all your sin city transgressions home with you.

What if someone offered you the Cadillac of El Camios? That would be the best of all worlds, wouldn't it? El Camino style and utility with Cadillac panache, all wrapped into one? If only such a creation really existed. Well, pine no more, because a Nevada-based eBayer has put just such a beast up for grabs, and it give the Vegas Strip a run for its money in the over-the-top audaciousness department.

Taking a standard Coupe de Ville and replacing the back seat and trunk with a massive covered storage box gives this 130-in wheelbase two-door a cab-forward appearance, despite having a hood large enough to be its own Vegas subdivision. There's no mention of what's under that hood, but the factory fitted a 325-bhp 390-cid in '59.

Also left unexplained is the impetus for the caddy's creation. Did someone think that Batman needed something in which to haul steer manure and rye seed back to stately Wayne manor? Was there a bunch of emo kids who looked at the car and thought that trunk's big, but we can do better?

Regardless of motive, the Ed Glowacke-led design retains much of what was iconic back in '59, including the sweep of the body-line from headlight to faux jet exhaust, made possible buy the use of Buick door structures. The exaggerated dogleg A-pillar, necessitating a complex-curve windshield is extant, although partially hidden by the external visor, and of course, the fins. The '59 Cadillac fins were the apex (or nadir, depending on your appreciation of the fin as automotive styling theme) of the genre, having out-finned the Exner-penned Chryslers that debuted a year prior. Those fins, as well as much of the rest of the chrome- which Bill Mitchell had described as laid on with a trowel- has been painted black here.

So, it's weird and, perhaps wonderful. And, like having been born with a tail, chances are you won't be running into anyone else with one of these anytime soon. But, is that worth $27,000? After all, that's a lot of chips to be betting all on black. What's it worth to you- a trip home from Vegas, twenty seven grand lighter, but a caddy-camino richer? Or, would you rather just lose that at the craps table and ride out of town on your thumb?

You decide!

<![CDATA[BlakRoc Camaro: Rap/Rock CD Launches With SS]]> Rap/rock is as old as Run DMC and Aerosmith, but The Black Keys-produced BlakRoc album has something on every Jay-Z mashup: a freaking Camaro SS. This may be the first album launched with its own custom car.

The Black Keys combine their garage/blues rock sensibilities with a cast of hip hop all-stars. It's almost a Wu Tang Clan rally with Raekwon, Rza, and even a posthumous ODB performance as well as Mos Def, Q-tip and others. You can listen to most of it here. So far so good.

And the car? It also started with a powerful platform but the upgrades aren't quite so great. The "higlights [sic]" are things the Camaro SS already comes with. The rest is the minimum you can do to consider a car truly upgraded including blacked-out logos/lights, tint, Lexani wheels and custom BlacRoc door sills. It's not bad, but we're not sure we're interesting in heading out on "Blak Friday" to pick one up.

However, if someone knows where a Deltron 3030 Jetta is we're totally ready to buy one.

Press Release: All the incorrect spellings may or may not be on purpose

<![CDATA[How To Uncute Teddy Bear Wheels]]> Ronal’s teddy bear wheels are a signpost on our culture’s march towards all-encompassing cuteness. But there’s a simple way to turn them into ursine wheels of doom.

All it takes is a liberal application of black paint with two strategic spots of red:

The one remaining snag on the way to pure teddy evil is the wheel lock masquerading as a belly button. The blackest of paints will be inadequate to make that detail even slightly serious. You’d probably have to install a gun in there to complete the transformation. An Oerlikon autocannon should do the job.

<![CDATA[HPP Daytona: Challenger Gets Even More Radically Retro]]> In case you hadn't noticed, the Dodge Challenger is already pretty retro, but the fellows at Heide Performance Products have turned the retro up to 11 with the HPP Daytona, a Dodge Charger Daytona re-imagined on a Challenger chassis.

The HPP Daytona, first unveiled at SEMA earlier this month, is little more than a dolled-up Challenger R/T with the 5.7-liter HEMI. Nothing's been tweaked beneath the hood, but somehow they've managed to add styling cues of the classic Charger atop the new Challenger and make the whole thing work pretty well. The new nose cone fits perfectly with the new Challenger's lines and while we'd quickly toss the faux side details, we're liking pretty much everything about this monster-winged creation. Of course, we never really outgrew our love of Hot Wheels cars. Now if only Chrysler could make an interior worth working with. [Source: HPP]

<![CDATA[Designer Builds Driveable Sega OutRun Cabinet]]> Garnet Hertz of the Pasadena Art Center College of Design is installing wheels, motors, and other equipment necessary to turn an OutRun arcade cabinet into an actual running car that renders on-screen what's happening in real life using GPS sensors.

Though the cabinet itself is modeled after a Ferrari Testarossa, it'll be built on top of an EVT America Electric Trike with electric motors. The GPS sensors from an iPhone will be combined with custom software to spit out a "map" on the arcade screen in an OutRun style. Of course, since this is highly dangerous it'll only be used in a controlled environment and not just out on the street. You can get a sense for how it works in the video below.

We look forward to seeing this incredible death trap on the street.

<![CDATA[Helter Skelta: Australia's Ugliest Sports Car Going Abroad]]> The Skelta is one of a handful of limited production Aussie sports cars, like the Bolwell Nagari, with real performance credentials and completely fugly design. And it's coming to Europe!

Designed for racing, the Skelta includes a lightweight spaceframe with a carbon fiber composite body keeping the car's heft down to a Calista Flockhart-like 1,587 pounds. Bringing the power to the sports car's power-to-weight ratio is either a tuned Honda 2.0-liter fourbanger putting down 340 HP or a 3.0-liter Hartley V8 pumping out 460 HP. Both are mated to a Honda six-speed transmission. The vehicle is available in either an open-top spyder or a two-seater with gullwing targa top.

There's no final word on the price of one of these, but it doesn't matter unless you live in the UK and probably have a lot of disposable income.

IT'S BEEN WINNING RALLIES AND RACES IN AUSTRALIA FOR 6 YEARS. NOW IT'S AVAILABLE IN THE UK – WELCOME TO THE SKELTA
Whether you want to compete in sprints and hillclimbs, clean up in GT racing, participate in track days, or simply motor through the summer sun to your local pub, the Skelta could be just the car for you.
Most road-going competition cars require a myriad of costly upgrades to make them fully competitive. The super-light, ultra-tough Skeltas on the other hand leave the factory with all the power, handling and braking they require to win out of the box.
Supreme lightness
The chrome molybdenum steel spaceframe is reinforced with a centre tunnel and sidepods made of carbonfibre/aluminium sandwich, while the body is crafted entirely from carbonfibre composite. This extensive use of strong but lightweight materials results in a dry weight of a mere 720kg.
Ample power
Power comes from either a supercharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder Honda unit of 340bhp or the 3.0-litre V8 Hartley engine of 460bhp – both engines drive through a Honda six-speed transmission. The suspension comprises rose-jointed double wishbones front and rear, linked to inboard MCA Proflex spring and damper units – the set-up is fully adjustable for track, camber, caster and toe. Powerful braking emanates from ventilated discs and four-pot callipers front and rear.
Cutting-edge aerodynamics
The heavily finned front air intakes, sizeable rear wing and diffuser are a clue to the aerodynamic package, which exerts 200kg of downforce at 90mph. Coupled to a 50/50 weight distribution this results in phenomenal cornering power – small wonder then that the car is so competitive, whatever its environment. The Skelta is available in two styles:
• Spyder – a wide-bodied, open-topped two-seater
• G-Force – a two-seater with detachable gull-wing targa top
One man's dream
The Skelta was born out of one man's obsession to win the incomparable 2000km Targa Tasmania road rally. A former Australian rally champion, Ray Vandersee began his determined assault on the Targa with a re-engineered Westfield. His ingenious modifications brought it closer to the Porsches, Nissan GTRs etc that were dominating such events, but it was clear that something fresh was needed to ensure him of outright victory. Starting with a clean sheet of paper, and incorporating all the attributes his extensive competition career told him were required, he designed his own creation from scratch – the Skelta.
Thanks to Skelta, Vandersee and his customers have now won countless events throughout Australia and New Zealand and Vandersee himself has come agonisingly close to realising his dream of wining Targa Tasmania outright. With a string of class wins and quickest stage times to his credit, plus the fastest Skelta yet under constant development, 2010 can't come soon enough for him. Skelta Racecars Europe has been formed to give UK and European drivers the chance of similar success and enjoyment.
Skelta facts
• The origin of the name? The Beatles hit Helter Skelter was blasting from the radio the night the project was conceived
• Skeltas are made in Toowoomba, Queensland, next door to the well established Vandersee family business of importing John Deere farm machinery and Hino trucks for distribution throughout Australia

<![CDATA[Swedish Sleepers, Part Two: The 500 HP Amazon]]> There’s nothing like internecine Scandinavian warfare when it comes to mad sleepers: hot on the heels of last week’s Saab 99 rocketship comes this Volvo Amazon. Definitely not your granddad’s Amazon.

In spite of its ferocious name and its compact but good looks, the Volvo Amazon is not a sports car. Far from it: the Amazon is a Swedish family sedan built half a century ago. With its small Euro engines, it took inspiration from Sweden’s glaciers when it came to acceleration in spite of the curb weight of 2,400 pounds, a helium balloon in these times.

Not this particular Amazon, though, put through the paces by the Getaway in Stockholm people. Instead of the original car’s double-digit amounts of horsepower, Linköpings Motorsport’s mad creation has a full five hundred at its disposal. Combine that with the delicate curb weight and the sight of this cute little box hurtling itself along forest roads suddenly makes sense.

And as for the handling? “It’s like a snake on a hot summer day,” is how the video’s narrator puts it.

There is something incredibly delicious about this Swedish school or performance tuning. It makes you shudder just to think what these people could do to yet another Swedish car: the mighty Koenigsegg! Christian von Koenigsegg’s earthbound fighter jets would probably reach for the skies in no time.

<![CDATA[Lingenfelter Trans Am Concept: There Goes The Neighborhood]]> The Lingenfelter 455 T/A Concept has shown its unique mug on the floor of SEMA. If you take a deep breath you can almost smell meth cookin' behind the curtain and hear dogs fighting over the din of the show.

ONE-OF-A-KIND LINGENFELTER PERFORMANCE ENGINEERING T/A CONCEPT CAR READIED FOR SEMA DEBUT
Vehicle Combines Muscle of the Past with Technology of Today

DECATUR, Ind. - Creating vehicles with astounding performance capabilities and "stop-in-your-tracks" curb appeal is nothing new for Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (LPE), and they've done it once again with their newest concept car the Lingenfelter T/A.

Readied for its debut in the Nitto Tire booth #46115 at the 2009 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, the Lingenfelter T/A utilizes "all the styling and muscle from the past combined with the technology and elegance of today," according to Ken Lingenfelter, owner of Lingenfelter Performance Engineering.

The vehicle, a modified 2010 Camaro with exhaustive engine and performance refinements as well as custom-molded body styling, harkens to the muscle-heavy '70s cars so beloved by enthusiasts.

"Lingenfelter Performance Engineering designed and built this vehicle with one goal in mind - to celebrate, in a most pronounced manner, America's muscle-car heritage," said Lingenfelter. "Just one look at its spirited design is all it takes to realize Lingenfelter knows power. And a turn of the key confirms that fact as all 650 horses start running."

First and foremost is the Lingenfelter T/A's power plant - a custom Racing Head Service (RHS) aluminum engine block with an impressive 455 cubic inch displacement. It features 4.155" bore Diamond 11.5:1 compression ratio pistons and a 4.200" stroke Lunati forged crankshaft. Lingenfelter Performance Engineering-brand CNC ported and polished LS7 heads and an LSX FAST 102 intake finish off the engine, which produces 655 hp and 610 ft.-lbs. of torque.

To assist the Lingenfelter T/A in handling that raw power, the car also features a Lingenfelter 6-bolt LS9 twin disk flywheel and clutch assembly and heavy-duty Driveshaft Shop halfshafts.

Body enhancements to the Lingenfelter Performance Engineering concept vehicle include a dramatic new hood with a shaker scoop and blue keyed stripe. A new front fascia borrows from the vehicle's inspired muscle car heritage, and incorporates custom head lamps, grille and turn signals for authentic detailing. The car's fender has a functional side extractor scoop and the rear quarter has a leading edge wheel flair. Dramatic details in the back again point to the vehicle's 1970s roots. Rear corners of the car have been extended nearly 4-inch with a wrapped down stand-up spoiler. Custom-created taillight housings nicely complement the package.

Wheels are custom designed 20-inch Honeycomb's with bright brushed aluminum details and are shorn with Nitto Tires in size 275/40ZR20 fronts and 315/35ZR20 rears.

A custom-designed CORSA Performance stainless steel exhaust provides even more torque for the Lingenfelter T/A concept vehicle, which is finished in an icy, bright white with an electric blue stripe running from front to rear.

Finally, to complete the muscle car experience, bright blue woven vinyl seat inserts and metal turned instrument panel accents highlight the interior. And Lingenfelter badges, indicating the vehicle's authenticity as a certified Lingenfelter creation, adorn the exterior.

For more than 30 years, Lingenfelter Performance Engineering has created a matchless heritage of bringing astounding new capabilities to the world's most sought-after sports cars. This legendary record of precision engineering continues today, as the highly skilled Lingenfelter production team continues to target design excellence in engine packages, superchargers and high-performance aftermarket components that refine power, speed and control. <![CDATA[Lingenfelter Turns Mullet-Mobile Into Screamin' Chicken]]> Sadly, the arrowhead-branded Pontiac Trans Am dead with the arrowheaded brand. But, the new Chevy Camaro brings new opportunity for the aftermarket to revive the screamin' chicken. Here's the first — the Lingenfelter 455 T/A — heading to tomorrow's SEMA.

CarandDriver has the full scoop and a whole messload of photos above and beyond these couple live shots here. We'll get a more detailed look ourselves when we head to SEMA tomorrow.:

Given the company's penchant for pumping up horsepower, of course Lingenfelter would rework the engine, too. Under the striped hood-there's no huge screaming chicken as of now-sits an aluminum 455-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) V-8 block with a lofty 11.5:1 compression ratio, ported-and-polished Lingenfelter heads from the Corvette Z06's LS7, a forged crankshaft, and high-flow intake. The custom stainless-steel exhaust comes courtesy of Corsa. Power output is quoted at 655 hp and 610 lb-ft of torque, up significantly from the 426 hp of a stock manual Camaro SS. Also present are a new twin-disc clutch and flywheel assembly and tougher rear half-shafts to withstand the extra grunt. Handling alterations are limited to the addition of Nitto tires.

<![CDATA[700 HP Saab 99 Is The Best Sleeper Ever]]> By all outward appearances, this Saab 99 is a nicely maintained Grandma car. Underneath, it's an all-wheel-drive, turbocharged, 700 HP terror machine capable of 9.8 second quarter miles. This Swede-built creation is likely the most ridiculous sleeper ever created.

Winters are long in Sweden and very dark. There's not much to keep you entertained, which explains why so many of the world's stupid-awesome projects come from the Nordic regions. This one is high, very high on the awesomeworld meter. These nutjobs took a straight-bodied Saab 99, stripped the interior and caged it, removed the engine and replaced all the internals then turned it around 180 degrees and mated it to an Audi 100 transmission and all-wheel-drive system, turbocharged the bejesus out of it and made everyone's wildest dreams come true. Our hats are certainly, and respectfully off to you, crazy Swedish Saab hoons.

The car is based on Lamborghini's height-adjustable sports chassis and gets some ravishingly expensive central locking wheels, a carbon fiber body kit of some extent, bespoke spoiler and carbon fiber seats along with interior carbon fiber widgets. The polished stainless steel exhaust is the only performance improvement, adding 29HP and 15 lb-ft of torque to the output of the 5.2-liter V10 for a total of 581 HP and 413 lb-ft of torque. <![CDATA[EXCLUSIVE: 800 HP Specter Werks Corvette GTR Live Shots!]]> After we saw press photos of the Lingenfelter twin-turbocharged 800HP Specter Werks Corvette GTR, we headed to their Troy, Michigan shop and grabbed some exclusive first photos of the super tuner car as it was packed up for SEMA.

We pulled into Specter's parking lot and the brilliant blue car was already out front, undergoing final detailing and getting some last minute partner stickers along the rocker panel. The car's a stunner out in the sunlight, and looks unbelievable compared to the debut silver color, wearing colors reminiscent of the C4 Corvette Grand Sport, with the carbon fiber splitter and rocker panels wearing a subtle red/orange stripe to offset the blue and brooding matte carbon fiber details. The HRE carbon fiber wheels are pretty amazing, with a carbon drum and forged center bolted through bushings embedded in the lip, wouldn't want to hit a pothole with those babies at speed. The StopTech brakes promise massive stopping power and they look great too. No engine shots yet boys and girls, you gotta wait for something to see from SEMA.
