<![CDATA[2009 Nissan Cube: First Drive]]> The 2009 Nissan Cube was designed for me: a young, design-conscious urban dweller. It's not a car; it's a mobile lifestyle enabler. Why, then, don't I like it?

Based on the Nissan Versa and sharing its 1.8-liter, 122 HP engine, it's here equipped with a continuously variable transmission. But really, the Cube's raison d'etre isn't its mechanical ability, but its body style. An upright two box like the Scion xB or Honda Element, the second generation Cube actually predated both those cars. This third generation vehicle, the first to be offered in the United States, attempts to soften the square edges, boosting both the design appeal and interior space.

The exterior is the kind of thing vacuous aesthetes go gaga for. The asymmetry and rounded boxes subvert traditional car archetypes into something that's more akin to a slightly outdated piece of architecture or furniture. While its profile is strikingly similar to that xB, it's radically different in detail, immediately looking like no other car on the road. Especially in a vibrant color like this teal, you'll stand out on the road in a way that might trouble men not confident in their sexuality.

But according to Nissan it's the interior that makes the car special. And that's where the Cube's argument starts to fall apart. Those heavily curved window apertures aren't repeated on the insides, creating square windowsills that are blocked off externally by the curves. The large, blacked off, asymmetrical rear 3/4 panel that so defines the exterior is also not repeated on the inside, it just masks traditional pillars and window placement. The narrow, vertical glass house and large, flat roof creates a dark, depressing interior environment that's not helped by the cheap plastics, outdated instruments and distinct lack of toys. Cubby holes, shelves and places to hang your man bag abound, but sitting in the Cube, you feel like an item being stored in a plastic cabinet, not a human driving a car. And while the upright design leads to spacious accommodation for five with a surprising amount of legroom given the exterior dimensions, actual utility is somewhat lacking. The trunk is ridiculously small and folding down the rear seats only results in a very square, but awkwardly shaped and surprisingly small area for cargo. A traditional five-door hatch is equivalent or better at hauling stuff in every way but height.

Nissan would like US customers to think of the Cube as a mobile living room, a concept created for space poor dwellers of Tokyo who need a car to double as mobile space for entertaining, relaxing, changing clothes and getting busy. That concept could be perfect for American teenagers, who are forced out of the house by creepily conservative parents yet are denied entry into venues for socializing. The only problem is that Americans like to do one thing that residents of Tokyo don't get the opportunity to: drive. The Cube isn't good at that.

Refinement is spoiled by the bouncy ride and the huge amount of noise coming from both the raucously unrefined engine as it annoyingly buzzes at constant, CVT-dictated revs, and also the wind noise created by the body and windshield's 90-degree opposition to the air. The Cube never feels dangerously slow (0-to-60 takes 9.3 seconds) nor dangerously ill handling, but its ability is, at best, basic. Compare to class-transcending rivals like the 2009 Honda Fit Sport, the Cube just isn't at all enjoyable to drive. The Cube also doesn't make up for this by being extremely efficient; we'd expect economy to be in line with the Versa's 27 MPG City, 33 Highway figures.

It's the Honda Fit that I constantly compared the Cube while I was driving it. While the Fit doesn't attempt to accomplish anything spectacular design wise, it ends up being a far more appealing vehicle thanks to an interior and driving experience that are far more capable than its size or spec sheet would suggest. The Cube is the opposite; its whacky looks aren't backed up by substance.

The Cube does have one thing going for it: price. Starting at just $13,990 with a six-speed manual, the CVT-equipped version you see here runs $15,690, while you can spend all the way up to $19,370 for the bells and whistles Krom version. The smaller, but more capable Honda Fit starts at $14,750, while the xB is $16,420.

So while young, design-conscious urban dwellers will be drawn to the Cube for its unconventional styling, they'll be disappointed by the distinctly conventional interior, utility and driving experience. It'll end up serving them just like a normal car, which is exactly what they'd be trying to avoid by purchasing one.

The Cube Krom is essentially the Japanese Cube Rider with the steering wheel on the correct side. If you're interested less in style and more in economy, the base model Cube 1.8 is a lowly $13,990 and comes with a manual transmission. For a little more change the manual-equipped 1.8 S adds more convenience equipment.

<![CDATA[Nissan Gets Free Advertising In Pepsi Super Bowl Ad]]> While performing our Super Bowl car commercial watching duties we noticed a 2009 Nissan Cube in the big Pepsi advertisement. What did it cost Nissan? Nothing.

The new advertisement for the new Pepsi can featured Bob Dylan as the old generation and Will.I.Am as the new generation of artists shilling for Pepsi. During the commercial old became new and, following this theme, a Dodge A100 forward-control van became the 2009 Nissan Cube. Curious how this happened, we contacted Nissan PR to get the full details.

According to Nissan, they were contacted by Pepsi a few weeks ago because they felt the vehicle was a nice modern "refresh" of the boxier A100 van and would work well in a commercial they were shooting. Nissan happily obliged, providing the vehicle for the shoot. Other than the nominal costs associated with delivering a vehicle, Nissan didn't provide a payment for the ad placement (we can't confirm some Crystal Pepsi wasn't exchanged).

Despite having four of the Top 11 Super Bowl car commercials of all time, Nissan didn't buy any ads this year. Overall, the ad was offensive to anyone who likes Bob Dylan. This plus the Victoria's Secret ad makes the senior Dylan a bigger sellout than Jakob Dylan.

Overall, the essentially free placement of their new vehicle in an ad about what's new and cool during the freaking Super Bowl is a big win for Nissan.

<![CDATA[2009 Nissan Cube Revealed]]> UPDATE: The 2009 Nissan Cube's price will start at $13,990 and we've even had a chance to test drive the Cube. Read our impression here. The Nissan Cube is hoping to capture the boxy chic market the Scion xB pioneered when it goes on sale in the US market next year. We think the Cube has a lot going for it. When it does arrive the funky little 2009 Nissan Cube will sport the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine found in the Nissan Versa, good for 122 HP and 127 lb-ft of torque. These will come mated to either Nissan's CVT transmission or a six-speed manual, for those who like to stand out in a crowd and row their own gears. Further differentiating the unique econobox from the rest of the market will be the "water drop" interior accents in the headliner and controls that give the appearance of rippling water. As with the Fit and Scion, the Cube will come loaded with features such as a sliding "sofa style" bench, remote keyless entry, an iPod-ready sound system and standard ABS. Buyers will also be treated to a host of other dealer-added accessories that could help propel the odd wagon into the hearts and homes of budget-conscious-yet-trendy buyers. 2009 NISSAN CUBE SET FOR SPRING U.S. DEBUT; NEW ENTRY-LEVEL COMPACT COMBINES FASHION WITH FUNCTIONALITY – Small But Substantial, Spirited But Economical, All-New Third Generation Cube's Asymmetrical Design and Lounge-Style Interior Provide Unexpected Charm and Utility – Huey Lewis once sang "It's hip to be square." Few believed him. Mathletes wax poetic about the superior geometric efficiencies of a cube in terms of volume v. surface area. And get little respect. Cavemen discovered that a round stone rolls better than a square one. And, as a consequence, gave birth to the traffic jam. In 1998, Nissan introduced the original Cube, an aptly named box-on-wheels, to minor consumer interest. Perhaps, like homo erectus, the Cube was simply ahead of its time. But times change, and so did the Cube. In 2002, an all-new second generation Nissan Cube was introduced in the Japanese market. More spacious inside, more glass outside, more power under the hood and, more importantly, a few more angles and curved surface details added to its compact, slab-sided exterior. Quintessentially Japanese, this new Cube took Tokyo by storm. A pocket-sized fun-and-function cocktail mixing the charm of Godzilla and the wit of Mothra, buyers were smitten. And so, it turns out, Huey was right after all. Like the Nissan GT-R before it, the Nissan Cube soon found an audience outside of Japan – not in person, but through its exposure in fashion and automotive magazines, videos and on the Web. Reboot to today, more than 10 years since its original appearance, and the Nissan Cube is ready to meet the world in person, coming to America in spring 2009 in an all-new, dramatically rethought third generation design that is clever, quirky, witty, fun and uniquely functional. And still totally square. More than just unique geometry, however, the new 2009 Nissan Cube is also conceived as a totally different take on an automobile – a car that doesn't want to be defined as car. "With its unique blend of fashion and function, Cube imagines a life less ordinary," said Al Castignetti, vice president, Sales, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA). "Cube is as much of a Mobile Device as it is an automobile, something that enhances life like people's digital devices do. Cube is a vehicle that people of all ages can fall in love with, even when they don't love cars." Evocative Yet Rational Though its uniquely styled, asymmetrical body makes a standout statement against the backdrop of today's look-alike entry-level vehicles, Cube presents a range of strong rational arguments for purchase as well. Along with its projected fuel economy of over 30 mph Highway (equipped with the CVT transmission, actual EPA estimates not available at this time), Cube offers an alphabet of standard safety equipment – including an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Traction Control System (TCS), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), six air bags (including front, side and curtain supplemental air bags) and front seat Active Head Restraints. "The new Nissan Cube is not, by any measure, a pure ‘youth car,' though it especially meets the needs of young adults' lives in the sense that it is social, expressive and practical," said Castignetti. "And like many entry-level vehicles, Cube will be purchased by young consumers with the help or influence of their parents. We believe the combination of value, fuel economy and safety will be especially reassuring to parents involved in such decisions." A "Bulldog in Sunglasses" The all-new 2009 Nissan Cube builds on the previous generation Cube's non-traditional design with an improved stance and an added sense of dynamic movement. With Cube's long wheelbase relative to its overall length (a 99.6-inch wheelbase against a 156.7-inch overall length) and wide track, the wheels, in effect, are pushed out to each corner – providing exceptional space utilization and a confident-looking stance that has been compared to a "bulldog in sunglasses." "The designers, engineers and planners' effort and passion in creating the next generation Cube was unheard of – perhaps only exceeded in recent memory by that of the Nissan GT-R development team," said Castignetti. "They were constantly drawing, cartooning, adding thoughts and ideas, which is how the image of the bulldog emerged and evolved. This was not a traditional development process." Along with its stance, the "incognito canine" look is aided by the wide headlights and grille treatment, the small but substantial body proportions and the short "tail" section. In the rear, the bar-type taillights reinforce the wide, anchored feel. The Cube's creators also sought to maintain a sense of "pure design," reducing the number of character lines to give simplicity and freshness to the styling. Another unique aspect of the Cube's exterior is the greenhouse. The A-pillars are positioned far outward and relatively upright, giving a wider range of forward visibility. The front door windows utilize a "photo frame" design patterned after a personal photo frame, while the asymmetrical wraparound side/rear window creates enhanced rear diagonal visibility for lane changes and reverse parking. "The ‘geometric circle shape in the square' rear window is Cube's signature," said Castignetti. "Though there are D-pillars on both sides of the Cube, the visual effect of the narrower passenger-side pillar is quite remarkable in the overall appearance, a look aided by the asymmetrical back door." Unlike typical top-hinged or clamshell-style utility rear doors, Cube features an easy-access refrigerator-style opening, which makes it possible to open or close it even if parked tight against other cars in parallel parking spaces or when backed in against a wall or other obstacle. The back door opens fully when space allows for loading groceries, luggage or large-sized objects – or to a limited-access position (about eight inches) when space is restricted for retrieving or loading a backpack or other small objects. The one-hand door handle operation is designed for easy use, even while carrying things in the other hand or arm. The 2009 Nissan Cube is available in eight mild-to-wild exterior colors: Chrome Silver, Steel Grey, Bitter Chocolate, Scarlet Red, Caribbean Blue, Moss Green, Super Black and White Pearl. A "Casual Lounge" Interior The centerpiece of the new Cube's universal appeal is its "social space" – the surprisingly roomy interior that offers room for five in a lounge-like comfort. "Cube is not wasteful in terms of its footprint, carbon or physical. It creates a third space, in addition to home and school, for interacting with friends. It's a space that is highly changeable and adaptable to owners evolving lives, with plenty of room for personalization," said Castignetti. Cube's clever, inspired and surprisingly open occupant space was conceived with a "Jacuzzi Curve" layout and "floating meter pod" driver's area. It combines "casual lounge"-style passenger seating with a relaxed driving experience. The interactive interior is anchored by its curve-themed architecture, such as the subtle wavy shaping of the instrument panel, door panels, seat shapes, armrests and the iconic circular/oval shapes of elements ranging from air conditioning vents, door pulls and climate controls. The comfortable Cube seating includes 6-way manual driver's seat and 4-way manual front passenger's seat, along with a "lounge sofa" style sliding rear bench seat. The reclining rear seat can be adjusted to three positions – full rearward (providing ample legroom), mid-position (3.9 inches forward) or front position (6.0 inches forward). The rear seat also is positioned higher than the front seats, theater style, enhancing rear passenger comfort and visibility. "In some ways, the Cube is like the big cardboard appliance boxes you used to play in as a kid – they could be clubhouses, race cars, forts, whatever your mood and imagination wanted at the time," said Castignetti. "The new Cube's interior leaves room for imagination and personalization, yet also starts with a solid functional purpose." Stress-Free Driving, Room For Personalization Cube's stress-free driving experience is the result of a number of factors: an extremely tight 32.8-foot curb-to-curb turning radius, a tall seating position made possible by the tall body height, an extremely short hood "invisible length" (the area of the hood panel that the driver is unable to see) and the good rear visibility for parking and backing up. "Our studies show that one of the most stressful aspects for young or inexperienced drivers is parking, particularly parallel parking," said Castignetti. "Cube is extremely adaptable to parking environments in terms of its compact exterior dimensions, good visibility and easy steering." Other interior features include the "floating pod" instrument panel with asymmetrical light blue and white gauges, which are designed to make it easier to distinguish between the speedometer and the tachometer. The gauge needles "sweep" when the engine is started to add a sense of flair, while the gradation effect gives a natural ambience similar to the glow of the white moon and the blue earth. Sub-gauges are concentrated for enhanced visibility. The three-spoke steering wheel is available with leather wrapping and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. Convenient storage spaces and cup/bottle holders are abundant throughout the Cube interior – including six cupholders (instrument panel, front center console and rear armrests) and five bottle holders (door panels and center console). There are also detachable multi-hooks for holding bags or hats, which can be moved from place to place – including the instrument panel and rear passenger doors. The "shelf expression" concept features two "shelves" located on top center and passenger side of the instrument panel. Not designed for holding objects when the Cube is in motion, they provide convenient spaces for placing keys, cell phones or digital music players when the vehicle is parked. The shelves can be personalized with accessory wood-like trim or shag carpeting. Cube's "Magic Rubber Bands," another clever Cube accessory item, are colorful rubber straps (red, yellow, orange or silver) that slip into cutouts on the door armrests to secure items such as maps, nametags, photos, towels or small stuffed animals. "The interior concept is really about the Cube conforming to the users' needs, rather than the other way around – you can put your favorite items anywhere you want, not where the vehicle tells you to," said Castignetti. "The designers demanded that every aspect of the Cube interior be delightful, as well as functional." The Cube interior design also incorporates a series of subtle "Water Drop" concentric circles, inspired by nature and the calming way that ripples move outward from a drop in water. The circles can be seen in items ranging from the roof headliner to the cupholders to the climate control design. A Wide Range of Available Features Cube's heating and cooling system provides quiet, efficient operation with easy to recognize and use knobs and switches. Other standard equipment offered on the 2009 Nissan Cube includes power windows with driver's side one-touch auto down feature, Remote Keyless Entry system, power door locks with auto-locking feature, variable intermittent windshield wipers and intermittent rear window wiper, rear window defroster with timer, cargo area courtesy light and hooks, 12-volt power outlet and adjustable front seat belt upper anchors. Available Cube technology features include Nissan Intelligent KeyÔ with Push Button Ignition, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, Rockford Fosgate subwoofer with six speakers, XM® Satellite Radio (XM® subscription required, sold separately), Interface System for iPod® and a rear sonar system. The Cube interior is offered in two color environments, Wall Gray and Graphite. Wall Gray, available in a quilted suede-like fabric with special "natural wave" stitching only, is designed to create a relaxing contrast between the warm, light gray upholstery and warm off-black interior accents. The warm off-black Graphite interior, available in two cloth grades, provides a combination of relaxation and more traditional "driving enjoyment" attitude. "The Cube interior is a great example of how an inexpensive, high value vehicle can be done well – quality design, quality materials and the features and equipment that the user needs with room for personalization, rather than forced customization," said Castignetti. Unexpected Power and Driving Ease Just as Cube has its own unique take on styling and interior design, the engineering team took a fresh approach to performance – creating a vehicle that is easy to drive and easy to handle in traffic. The emphasis for Cube's performance credentials is squarely on fun-to-drive, rather than exhilaration. Cube combines an advanced 122-horsepower 1.8-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder with a new-generation Nissan Xtronic CVTÔ (Continuously Variable Transmission) for good acceleration response, smooth operation and fuel efficiency. Torque is rated at 127 lb-ft. The MR18DE engine, also utilized in the popular Nissan Versa, is designed to be powerful and responsive, while also delivering excellent fuel economy. Fuel economy is projected to be over 30 miles per gallon Highway with the CVT transmission (actual EPA fuel economy unavailable at this time). The Xtronic CVT, unlike conventional stepped gear automatics, operates as essentially "one gear" through use of a belt and two pulleys. By infinitely varying the working diameters of the two pulleys, the transmission eliminates the "steps" between gears, resulting in a smoother, more efficient operation by keeping the engine in its optimum power range under a variety of driving and load conditions. Cube's new generation CVT adopts a new CVT oil warmer for enhanced warm-up performance in cold conditions (reducing friction). It also includes an advanced Adaptive Shift Control (ASC), which detects the driving situation and style (economy, normal, sports) and communicates with the engine control – helping optimize both fuel economy and driving pleasure. The 2009 Cube is also offered with a 6-speed manual transmission with a new shift control system, triple cone synchronizers (1st and 2nd gear) and reverse synchronizer system. The 6-speed manual is available with Cube 1.8 and Cube 1.8 S models. "The Cube has a strong power-to-weight ratio, which combined with the advanced CVT, gives it a surprisingly spirited driving feel. Throw in the small turning radius, good outward visibility and the smooth suspension feel and you have the perfect formula for navigating through traffic with confidence and ease," said Castignetti. Cube's suspension combines an independent MacPherson strut front design with stabilizer bar with a torsion beam rear with integrated stabilizer bar. Its comfortable, flat ride is a result, in part, of the "Ripple Control" shock absorbers and the high body stiffness. Other standard equipment includes vehicle-speed-sensitive electric power-assisted steering, power-assisted front disc/rear drum brakes and 15-inch wheels with P195/60R15 tires. Cube's long list of standard safety features includes the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS), seat-mounted driver and front-passenger side-impact supplemental air bags, and roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags for front and rear-seat outboard occupant head protection. Cube also offers standard front-seat Active Head Restraints, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System (TCS), along with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). Three Well-Equipped Models The 2009 Nissan Cube is offered in three well-equipped models: Cube 1.8, Cube 1.8 S and Cube 1.8 SL. A full range of dealer accessories allows buyers to expand their Cube world with items such as an illumination kit with 20 selectable colors, illuminated kick plates, rear cargo organizer, pet blankets, wheels, aero kits and more. "We know that self-expression is important to many potential Cube buyers, so we've provided the room and accessorize to help with personalization," said Castignetti. "However, Cube is far from a blank or empty canvas that buyers must equip on their own. Cube is a different kind of box than other vehicles on the market, with an abundance of personality right off the assembly line." Smart Simplicity "Economical, affordable, functional and adaptable, the 2009 Nissan Cube offers an unmatched sense of ‘smart simplicity.' It builds on a Cube DNA of distinctive spirit and non-automotive style, and adds an enhanced level of humanistic charm and clever design," said Castignetti. "If cars could talk, Cube would be likely to say, ‘Nice to meet you.' Come this spring, America gets its chance."

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today revealed the all-new, third generation of its highly successful Nissan Cube in launch events in Japan, the United States and Europe. The fully redesigned Cube continues the iconic "cubic" styling of the previous generation, adding a higher level of refinement and polish inside and out. Sales of the new Cube begin in Japan on Nov. 26, followed by North American in the spring of 2009, and Europe and other global markets in fall 2009.
Originally launched in 1998, the Cube has sold nearly one million units to date in Japan. The latest version maintains the distinctive exterior styling that is instantly recognizable as the Cube, such as the asymmetric rear end, while pursuing a simpler, more universal design for its debut on the world stage. It offers greater comfort, a larger cabin and a host of innovative interior details such as sofa-like seating, a large glass roof panel that extends over the driver's seat for an open, airy view of the outside environment, and a shoji-style roof shade that fills the cabin with gentle light. Despite its increased roominess, the new Cube remains less than four meters long, providing big utility within a small physical footprint. With its excellent visibility and maneuverability, along with smooth performance and high fuel efficiency, the new Cube is a high-performance daily driver created to be enjoyed by value-conscious buyers worldwide.

"The new Cube is designed for people who imagine a life less ordinary, who have grown tired of the never-ending pursuit of faster, more powerful, more outrageously styled cars," said Yosuke Iwasa, Segment Chief Product Specialist. "The quieter, more harmonious qualities of the Cube have attracted interest not only among young people, but for those in every walk of life. While carrying forward the concept of the original Cube, this latest edition has advanced significantly, including offering far greater comfort."

"The new Cube is a refined car of universal quality and appeal, that can compete without 'makeup' or excessive decoration," said Seiji Watanabe, Associate Product Chief Designer. "The development concept took the approach of 'purifying' the Cube design, rather than "evolving' it. A jagged rock, for instance, loses its edges and takes on a polish as it travels down a river. This is the sort of refinement we wanted for the new Cube. We worked to simplify its exterior, using fewer lines and widening certain areas. We allowed the Cube design to refine itself, moving closer to nature and suggesting human warmth. The resulting 'purer, more peaceful' design is just what we wanted. It is a vehicle for people who are not being influenced by others, who go their own way, and enjoy interactions with friends in a welcoming atmosphere."

<![CDATA[2010 Nissan Cube Gets Accidental Unveil On Japanese Transport Truck]]> The 2010 Nissan Cube, bound for US sales and an LA Auto Show unveil tomorrow, has been revealed in these pictures of a car transit to somewhere in Japan posted on the Motive Mag forum. The new Cube retains its asymmetrical look while at the same time managing to look a bit sleeker than its predecessor. The grille shrinks a bit and the headlights get a more high tech look. The roof goes from pure flat to a slight curve and the rear of the vehicle retains the same backwards "S" sweeping across the glass from the rear door. We'll be looking for more details tomorrow at the official unveil, but enjoy these pics for now and wait in anticipation for the pending angry washing machine van wars to come.

<![CDATA[Nissan Cube USA Website Goes Live Complete With "Free" T-Shirt Offer]]> The preview website for the US-bound Nissan Cube has gone live, complete with a 2010 Ford Mustang-esque long-lead countdown timer. Ninety days out from the LA Auto Show reveal, the website gives us a peek at the Cube's marketing direction, which seems to be a second-year art-school student's wet dream. It's stacked deep with snappy animations, confusing artistic movies, overexposed images and a link to every known social media widget we've ever seen. But what about that free T-shirt?

Even though they're Twittering (which some of us still don't get the point of) and Facebooking like mad, nothing says marketing like free stuff. If you're one of the first five hundred people to follow this link, you'll get to choose a Cube-branded American Apparel T-shirt with your choice of wacky Cubic slogan, and all you have to pay is the shipping and handling. See how much this isn't like the Scion xB? The marketing is young and fresh and hip, and nobody with gray hair will ever buy it! [NissanCube]

<![CDATA[Not-Available-Here Econobox Shootout: 500 Vs. Hornet Vs. Cube]]> We're all now apparently destined to give up our delightful gas-guzzling luxury boats (again) and dump our super-sized SUVs in favor of wearably small fuel sippers. It seems, thanks to news yesterday that the Dodge Hornet's still in the mix and planning to head stateside, that at least a few automakers are trying to make them interesting, or are at least making them look interesting. Unfortunately none of them are yet here. But of these unbuyable-here (and in a couple of cases, anywhere) econoboxes, we're wondering which ones you're most interested in — hit the jump.

Fiat 500
2008-Fiat-500.JPG
Fiat has been on again, off again on its plans for a return to the US, but we're hoping eventually to see the reborn Fiat 500 on domestic shores — if for no other reason than to give Mini owners something to think about. Sure, it'll need a little more scoot or a totally different torque curve to get us interested, but the car has style and a superb interior, plus it sips the fuel.

Dodge Hornet
Dodge-Hornet.jpg
With production confirmation yesterday, we'll be waiting with baited breath for the sting of the Chinese-built Dodge Hornet. The little bruiser should come in right about when gas tops $15 a gallon and the cities start to burn. But that won't stop us from being interested in the Hornet. We'll just have to wait and see if Chryslerberus and Chery can deliver the goods on product quality.

Nissan Cube
Nissan-Cube.jpg
The Nissan Cube has been forbidden, asymmetrical fruit for years now, but Nissan is telling us the next version will be US-bound. We don't know if the funky style will survive, but it could be the beneficiary of Carlos Ghosn's big electric push, resulting in an all-electric Cube. We'd welcome the little-van-that-could with open arms even if it's just a gasser.

<![CDATA[2010 Nissan Cube?]]>

It looks like the same video that yielded the 2010 Nissan 370z may have also given us this photo of the 2010 Nissan Cube, looking like a refined version of the Nissan Cube currently for sale in the Japanese domestic market. Hard to say with this melted cube design and, because it's from The Hollywood Extra, there's no telling where it's actually from. Still, it looks like a screen cap to us so we're assuming the very strange looking denizens of the site lifted it from the same location they found the last set of Nissan shots. <![CDATA[Nissan Cube Coming To US, Electric Version Still A Concept]]> The Nissan Denki Cube Concept is something you've probably already seen. In fact, you probably saw it this morning when we caught the electric Nissan Cube sunning itself in advance of its press conference. What did we learn at the press conference? Fleet-use electric vehicles by 2010 and commercial vehicles by 2012. The big news is that the LA Auto Show this fall will see the introduction of the next generation Cube for the North American market. Press release, pictures of the Denki Cube and shots of two rather unfortunately customized Cubes below.

Nissan's "Denki Cube" Electric Vehicle Concept Brings Distinctive Spirit Into Play in New York Auto Show Debut

New York City is about to get a lesson in what happens when geography meets geometry - specifically, when the world, which is round, meets the Nissan Cube, which is essentially square. The occasion is the world debut of the Nissan Denki (Japanese for "electric") Cube Concept at the 2008 New York International Auto Show.

The lithium-ion battery-powered Denki Cube electric vehicle concept, which will be on public display at the Nissan exhibit at Jacob Javits Convention Center from March 21 through March 30, was created to draw attention to Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.'s (NML) global environmental efforts. It also serves as a preview of Nissan's future small car strategy for the North American market, which includes plans to sell a redesigned gasoline-powered, next-generation Cube at Nissan dealers in the United States and Canada beginning in 2009.

"The Denki Cube Concept is a fun way to expose American buyers to one of Nissan's most popular home market cars at a time when fuel economy and packaging efficiency are on a lot of people's minds," said Al Castignetti, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Nissan North America, Inc. "Like the production Cube on which it is based, the Denki Cube Concept is boxy yet charming, fashionable and functional, and completely tuned in to today's needs for enjoyable efficiency."

About the Denki Cube Concept
In creating the Denki Cube Concept, the designers started with a well-defined canvas, the current-generation Nissan Cube. The iconic Cube has always been the antithesis of traditional automotive style - square, minimalist, asymmetrical and humble - yet also warm, relaxing, practical and undeniably charming. To this solid foundation, the Denki Cube adds a new EV powertrain and unique exterior and interior treatments.

The Denki Cube Concept's exterior features fresh front and rear styling treatments, including a new "electric themed" front grille design with an AC power charging port, a radical "lightning" headlight design and new bumpers and turn signal lamps. In the rear, the signature Cube asymmetrical rear quarter area (with wraparound glass on one side) has been enhanced by a new bumper with hidden taillights. The roof sheet metal has been replaced with a full fixed glass panel that enhances the interior's sense of wide-open space. The Denki Cube Concept exterior also features new door mirrors and unique 16-inch wheel covers. The finishing touch is provided by a special white pearl paint and graphics.

Inside, the Denki Cube Concept reflects the designers' intention of creating a relaxing, moving social hub, like a favorite room in an owner's house. Though the production Cube offers three rows of seating, the Denki Cube Concept offers only two rows and the wheelbase has been stretched 9.4 inches in order to better accommodate the lithium-ion battery cells. The newly designed front and second row seats are joined by a revised instrument panel with an IP-mounted shift button, a special steering wheel design and new door panel and cargo area trim.

The biggest transformation from production Cube to Denki Cube Concept is one that isn't visible - the replacement of the standard 1.3-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor and laminated lithium-ion batteries located under the floor and seats. The laminated structure and unique material technology offer more power, energy and battery stability, as well as compact size and packaging flexibility, versus conventional cylindrical batteries.

Nissan's compact lithium-ion battery technology, one of the company's traditional strengths, provides batteries with twice as much energy compared with a conventional cylindrical battery of the same type and safer operation due to the use of chemically stable spine-structured manganese for the electrode material. In order to better leverage Nissan's lithium-ion battery capabilities, a new company, Automotive Energy Supply Corp. (AESC), was jointly established with NEC Corp. and NEC Tokin Corp. - with the goal of dramatically enhancing future battery performance and reducing battery costs.

"Nissan first had an electric vehicle in the road in 1947 and has been field-testing lithium-ion batteries for more than ten years," said Castignetti. "Our ongoing goal is to dramatically enhance future battery performance while reducing battery costs."

About Nissan Green Program 2010
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.'s (NML) mid-term environmental action plan, Nissan Green Program 2010 (NGP 2010), is designed to fulfill Nissan's environmental philosophy of "symbiosis of people, vehicles and nature" and contribute to a sustainable mobile society. NGP 2010 is specifically focused on reducing CO2 emissions both from Nissan products as well as from day-to-day corporate activities.

Nissan is focused on three core areas related to the environment: reducing CO2 emissions; reducing exhaust emissions; and accelerating recycling efforts.

Highlights of Nissan Green Program 2010 include:

* Incorporating CO2 reduction as one of the key management performance indicators.
* Launch a "three-liter car" with a target of 2010; a gasoline-fueled car that runs 100 kilometers on three liters of fuel.
* Expand availability of Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFV) within the next three years.
* Launch a Nissan electric vehicle early in the next decade.
* Develop an original Nissan hybrid vehicle targeted for launch in FY2010.
* Accelerate development of plug-in hybrid technology.
* By 2010, reduce CO2 emissions from global manufacturing plants by 7% (per unit) compared to 2005.

"The Nissan Green Program 2010 provides a transparent view of Nissan's future commitments to all aspects of environmental management," said Toshiyuki Shiga, Chief Operating Officer, NML. "Nissan Green Program 2010 has been designed to address immediate challenges as well as creating the foundation towards a long-term sustainable business model."

<![CDATA[Nissan Denki Cube Captured Before Press Event]]> Those press event rehearsals are always causing trouble as us bothersome bloggers just want to see the shiny, so we don't miss a beat. We heard about the Nissan Denki Cube Concept at the last minute, and today we see it with our own one lens. The all-electric anti-symmetry Nissan is outfitted with a trick hidden "fuel door" and the loudest yellow interior you've ever seen. Tweety would feel pale in there. Anyway, we'll bring you more information on the dinky Denki when the event comes around for reals.

<![CDATA[Nissan To Unveil All Electric Denki Cube At New York Auto Show]]> Nissan is planning on sticking a finger in the eye of every fuel cell and hybrid toting automaker at next weeks' New York Auto Show when they unveil the Nissan Denki Cube. The all-electric Denki is named for the Japanese word for electric and will be trumping the other manufacturers in its earth friendly marketing campaigning. Nissan has already claimed they will bring an EV to market by 2010 and if the Cube is the candidate, we'll welcome it. The ones we saw while abroad during the Tokyo Auto Show were cool as hell and we wouldn't mind seeing something like them stateside, even if they are silent and don't burn dinosaur juice. <![CDATA[Cubepage? Cubamino? Cubechero? You decide!]]> Ben Hsu over at Japanese Nostalgic Car Magazine has become our pusherman for the weird Japanese stuff we're hooked on around here. Today he's sent in a photo of some Nissan Cubes with truck beds, which one can buy in Japan at Autobacs. According to Señor Hsu: "These were custom built by Autobacs, a Japanese big box retailer where, if you had enough cashish, you could turn your bone stock clapped-out 1989 Nissan 240SX into a full blown D1GP drift machine without ever leaving the store. One-stop shopping at its finest. They also build their own original sports car chassis, the Autobacs Garaiya." The question here is: What do we call a Cube with truck bed? There's a tenuous case for "Cubepage," because Nissan connects to Renault which connects to AMC which connects to Chrysler... but is three degrees of separation close enough?

To get us in the right mood for this, we need to purge our minds of the plain-white-rice image of relentless corporate dullness with which Toyota has saddled Japan (because, in fact, nobody does weirdness as well as the Japanese). Since you probably don't have time to read some Dazai right now, we're providing some Melt-Banana. OK, now the poll!

<![CDATA[Cube-ism: Automobile Meets Art]]> Turns out Mr. Jeff Winterberg, despite the "murky details," was right about the Nissan Cubes at Pratt. Nissan is having design students hack on the interiors and then present the results at the NY Auto Show in April. But, what he had no way of knowing about was that the Brooks Institute film school in Santa Barbara, CA also has two of the rolling boxes. Why? To "intemperate and communicate the essence of the vehicle," of course. When we were in school we were only asked to intemperate and communicate the essence of Jungian archetypes vis-a-vis Freud's analytical methods while fighting hangovers. Sigh... Full press release from Nissan after the jump.

NISSAN CUBE COLLABORATION INVITES FILM AND DESIGN STUDENTS TO THINK "OUTSIDE OF THE CUBE" Las Vegas, NV — October 30, 2007 — Nissan North America (NNA) today announced a unique partnership with two film and design schools to showcase the Nissan Cube, a product sold in Japan, in the American market in a very distinctive way. The collaboration will task students to create provocative films and designs by integrating the Cube's inspirational and stylish design. The Brooks Institute film school in Santa Barbara, CA and Pratt Institute, School of Art and Design in New York City will participate in the Cube project, Cube-ism: Automobile Meets Art.

"When first launched in Japan, the Nissan Cube was the 'must-have' car for the uber-fashionable and trendy consumers," says Bruce Campbell, vice president, Design, Nissan Design America. "It quickly skyrocketed to become an icon in Japan, and - as Nissan continues to think big about small products - this project helps us understand how we can translate that success to other markets like North America."

Each school will receive two Nissan Cubes and participants from each school will be asked to interpret and communicate the essence of the vehicle. Both the Film and Design students will be asked to present concept direction presentations at the outset of the project for Nissan review and will meet with Nissan for periodic updates. The film students will be tasked with creating a short film, between 5-10 minutes long, that highlights the essence of the Nissan Cube. The design students are challenged with enhancing the Cube through changes in exterior colors, graphics, seat materials and wheel treatments. Projects will also include an eco-friendly element. Final works will be featured at the 2008 New York International Auto Show in April.

<![CDATA[Nissan Cubes in NYC with CA Plates]]> Pssst. You want to know why we love our readers?

In May of 2006 I was at a rest stop off the highway somewhere in between Nagoya and Tokyo, feeding 100 yen coins into a vending machine, trying to get a little die-cast Nissan Cube. It took three or four tries and I still have a few Toyota Vitz (Yaris to you and me) models to prove it. I was so taken with the looks of the Cube that I decided I couldn't leave Japan without at least a tiny, questionably rendered facsimile of one. You can guess my unbridled joy at the news Nissan would be bringing them to the states in 2008.

Fast forward to this morning and a bleary-eyed me pulling into the parking lot at work and seeing not one, but two Japanese market, right hand drive Cubes parked side by side, mocking me. It turns out Pratt Institute is modifying the interiors somehow for the New York auto show in May (this may not be accurate, details are murky). I snapped a bunch of photos tout de suite in fear they would disappear into the bowels of the institution, never to be seen again. I am now angling for a test drive before they are altered, if that happens I will give a full report and get some better interior shots. Crossing my fingers now for the 4wd one.
So writes Mr. Jeff Winterberg. Who, by the way, took all these purty pictures. Not that it needs saying, but how can you not love an asymmetrical box?]]>

<![CDATA[Report: Nissan to Launch Cube, Two More Subcompacts in the US]]>

The Cube is coming to the US. We've been hearing that (and its inverse) for nigh on two years. But if Japan's financial newspaper Nikkei is to be believed, a restyled Cube, along with two additional subcompacts, could hit these shores (and Europe's) as early as 2008. Long the favored hookup spot for Japanese youths, most of whose parents don't have a wood-paneled basement, the Cube will reportedly lead a charge into the lower end of the US car market. A full redesign, which will likely bring the two-box box up to current US crash-test standards, will be revealed next year. Roach clips and Shonen Knife albums, optional.
