Is it time for Gruman step vans to start getting the resto mod treatment?

All I know is that if I saw this little monster scooting by me at triple digits, I would just assume I was hallucinating from some sweet old cartoon+ oh, R. Crumb, let's say. He'd draw this.

If the HHR looked exactly like this, would it have sold more, or less. Discuss:

@Feds: The Divco vans were endearing in their overall shape: lumpy at one end, functionally boxy at the other, and honestly from a different era they carry no pretensions of classic styling. The Divco is the classic style the HHR struggles to emulate. Would it have sold more? Probably. The Divco's tall shape, low floor and compact length make it simultaneously spacious inside and conveniently small outside. Originally designed for city and suburban deliveries, the Divco's been optimized for tight squeezes as traffic goes. The one area where the Divco falls far short is on-highway cruising, where its short gearing and trucky suspension put it at a serious disadvantage compared to the HHR. Modern chassis modifications could quickly level the playing field, however. Given my choices, HHR vs. Divco, I'd be strongly inclined to drive the classic Divco. The HHR would be a distant second choice.

You want to know how awesome this delivery van is? You load it up with jugs of water and by the time the Divco gets to its destination (12.8 seconds) it's changed to Shiraz.

Yin yang is a Chinese philosophical concept which says that two seemingly unrelated and opposing forces are interconnected in the natural world in order to keep everything in balance.

This beast proves yin yang when you consider UPS is putting hybrid systems on their delivery trucks to increase their fuel economy. In order to keep the world in balance, this guy builds a soon-to-be 572 ci monster of a delivery van.

@engineerd: Isn't increasing fuel economy as simple greenwash over the fact that they would presumably be saving money as well?

This, to me, is proof that all is right in the world, and there are still people out there fighting for truth, justice, and everything that is truly good. I salute you, Mr. High-Speed-On-A-Stool.

@Deartháir - Now with more SingoFinger™!: Although obviously you might want to rephrase that before we get it engraved on the guy's plaque. Because, after all, high speed on a stool generally requires medical treatment and is not really something to crow about.

That is possibly the most awesome delivery van in the world. The only way this could be any more awesome would to actually use it as a delivery van.

No wonderbread, it needs to be some sort of dairy.

I wonder if he kept the flat gas pedal these had, so you could drive them while standing.

@tenbeers: I miss being able to buy what were known as Fags. I think that they were then changed to Fads, but I haven't seen them for years.

As for the van, I like it. Billetproof seems so much more in tune with the Jalop ethos than Autorama.
